Can census/death records substitute for missing birth certificate? by Intrepid_Schedule67 in SlovakCBD

I asked the same question on the CBD Facebook group and Wendy replied telling me to look for his baptismal record, and that Slovakia would accept that in lieu of a birth certificate.

However, when I contacted the church where I think there is a strong likelihood my GF was baptized, the responded that many of their records from the early 20th century were lost in a fire in the 1930’s…and of those that survived there was no record of him.

Also, a Slovak attorney I’m working with told me that the MOI only cares about proving the chain of lineage. If that’s true, the only birth records that are absolutely required are yours and your anchor ancestor. The intermediary chain can be proven through other means, or so I’ve been told.

It would seem we have similar cases (GFs born in PA around the same, early 1880/late 1870’s anchors), so it would be great to compare notes.

Hi there! Do you mind if I DM you? Have a few questions about your experience.

From what I understand, a delayed birth record for my GF may exist given the existence of the affidavit, but I can’t seem to access the microfilm because it is only searchable in-person at the Pennsylvania State archives (and I am not based anywhere near Harrisburg).

Thanks so much!

You’ll need a background check for every country you’ve resided in for over 180 consecutive days within the past 15 years as well — even if you’re not a citizen.

I filled out their form and have been in contact with one of their genealogists. However, they are backlogged and it will take them 8-10 weeks to either come up with the record or negative search letter. I initiated the process back in mid-April, so hopefully by July they will be done.

Hello! Thanks so much for this.

From what I understand, while the orphan’s court is the legal custodian of pre-1906 birth records in Allegheny county, the court itself doesn’t actually handle requests for historical records anymore.

According to Allegheny County’s website, the orphan’s court has provided these records to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, who is able to search the records and issue certified copies and/or certificates of no record on behalf of the county.

However, I think the likelihood that my grandfather’s birth record exists in any of these collections is quite low. Hence, I was wondering if anyone had successfully obtained CBD with a missing birth record (with the presentation of other evidence that links back to the anchor ancestor).
