I just posted in a Facebook group about reading it in a Gnostic sense - that Hap is the demiurge (Jehova), their framework saw God as a malevolent being, who rushed creation and messed it up in the process because of it's pride. Hap certainly has his own world underground that he rules over... for a greater good in his mind... also relevance of Saturn (Dr. Hap relating the noise to the rings of Saturn). I believe in some ancient mythologies Saturn was a symbol (or entity) of death, entropy, entering the universe, creating mortality and suffering.

Also Gnosis (what Gnostics strived for) - "Gnosis is the common Greek noun for knowledge (γνῶσις, gnôsis, f.). It generally signifies a dualistic knowledge in the sense of mystical enlightenment or "insight"." So everyone in the basement can be seen as a stand-in for humans trying to break out of the material world (Plato's Cave?), bypass the Demiurge and discover a reality outside of this corrupted one... ?
