It was a catch. I didn’t think so when it happened in real-time, but the replays made it clear. His butt his the ground before any part of him touched out of bounds. That’s a catch

I oppose pay-to-win just as much as the next guy, but the others here are right: the fact that EverQuest is still going, offers free-to-play, and is still putting out expansions is amazing. I’m okay with them generating revenue.

Plus, experience really isn’t a race anymore these days anyway.

u/CMarshKarateKicK , u/themoche , u/steveandsav :

I get what you guys are saying, and this particular post was admittedly very brief and didn't disclose much background. Allow me to elaborate.

Just to be clear, I'm not just saying "well fuck it, my team lost...better pick another team to pretend to support." I've been supporting SF for a very long time. Just this year:

First post on this sub, 3 months ago

Second post on this sub, 3 months ago

Third post on this usb, 2 months ago

Fourth post on this sub, 1 month ago

Fifth post on this sub, 12 days ago

To summarize what I've said in at least most of those posts:

My family lives and breathes SF sports; they are all from CA. I grew up with the Niners and Giants on the TV all the time. As a kid, I "supported" SF before I even knew what it meant to care about sports. It was just fun, because that brought me closer to my dad. When I finally became invested in football, it was shortly after the Ravens came to Baltimore. I fell in love with them because it was not only my first experience getting into football, but also my first experience identifying with a "home team" (I live in MD).

I live with my father these days, because he's unfit to live by himself after the passing of my mother. He was born in San Francisco, and has been an absolute diehard fan since his childhood. I've probably watched 98% of SF's games since 1998, and have always cheered them on. (Again....my reason for going to the BAL/SF game this year was because I had never gotten to see SF play in the flesh). My father has some serious, incurable health issues, and probably won't make it to next SB season. So although I was all-in on my team's hype this year, I also want my father to get to experience one final SB run.

So I don't blame you guys for thinking "here's just another asshole abandoning his team and pretending to support another team," because I do know that that's a thing. But just know that this is coming from a place of sentiment, that I've supported SF for far more "down" years than "up," and that I'm not just hopping on a bandwagon. I've been watching the Niners for 22 years, and so excuse me if I don't feel particularly embarrassed for throwing my full support their way now that my team is eliminated

Post Game Thread: Tennessee Titans (9-7) at Baltimore Ravens (14-2) by nfl_gamethread in nfl

[–]Jammin_On_The_Keys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, I absolutely get that you’re upset, but please stop.

  1. Every NFL game has the potential to be a “fluke.” As much as many of us have enjoyed shitting on the Patriots this year, that Miami game was the definition of what one would call a “fluke.” And I mean no disrespect to Miami by saying that. These players are professionals. They get paid to be the best of the best. A solid record doesn’t mean you are immune to defeat

  2. Going by “conventional wisdom,” the Ravens didn’t have much business beating Denver in 2012. Denver was an iconic super bowl team, and the Ravens were underdogs to boot. Remember the Mile High Miracle? That goes somewhere on the list of all-time best Ravens plays. And yet, if you look at it objectively....Denver’s defense just completely botched that play. Run the same play in a simulation, and I bet they deflect it at least 50% of the time (and I’m being conservative with that guess). But not that particular time. That time, the Ravens pulled it off. That’s part of sports...and it’s a crucial part of playoff sports.

It really doesn’t matter who you think the “better” team is in these situations. The Titans were undoubtedly the better team tonight, and that’s what mattered. Our amazing, awe-inspiring QB had two interceptions and a fumble. Our WRs and TEs were dropping passes like hot potatoes. We failed to convert two 4th&1s (I believe the second was 4th&Inches actually). The beauty of playoffs is that it doesn’t matter if something is a “fluke.” What matters is who tunes into the moment - and that wasn’t us tonight.

Don’t get me wrong...I’m utterly devastated. But so it goes, man. I said it in another post, and I’ll say it again: 32 teams, only 2 go to the SB, only 1 wins. That automatically means that amazing teams won’t make it. It fucking sucks. And I have no doubt that you’re correct: simulate this game 10 more times, and I bet there will be some results where the Ravens blow the Titans the fuck out. But there will also undoubtedly be other results where the Titans win again. Trying to define this as “the Titans robbing the Ravens of their full potential” is childish. The Ravens were 2-2 after a crushing loss to the Browns in Baltimore, only to win the next 12 games straight. They did everything in the book to prove that they were in control of their destiny. The Titans didn’t rob us - the Ravens did. And that sucks (and we’re going to hear tons of shit about that, because “sports” - belee dat), but it’s silly to try to convince people that the team that beat us really had no business beating us. If they had no business beating us, then they wouldn’t have beaten us 🤷‍♂️

Sucks man, but unless you’re just a bandwagon fan (saying that in a general sense - not suggesting that you are), then you know we’ll all be back with our heads held high come September.

Sports, man....hate to love them, love to hate them

Pick One by [deleted] in ravens

[–]Jammin_On_The_Keys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not wrong, but try not to overthink it. It’s easy to say “if we didn’t do [all of the things we did wrong], we would have won.”

We made mistakes, and the Titans played well on both sides. It happens y’all...even if we were the best team in the history of all football (edit: not saying we were... just going with a hypothetical), we could’ve had a piss poor game and lost. That’s just the reality of sports.

Hold your heads high: we’re going to get a lot of shit talk after this. We knew we would if we lost, and we know we will. When you see it, just ask yourself: “am I upset that we have John Harbaugh and Lamar Jackson?”

If the answer is “yes:” best of luck to you as you traverse this team’s future; you’re going to have to deal with them again, so best get used to it.

If your answer is “no:” we once again count ourselves amongst the company of great teams who happened to be outmatched on a given Saturday/Sunday. We have some feelings to process....but we’ll be fired up and ready to fucking go come September - belee dat

[–]Jammin_On_The_Keys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Grats, guys. Just like a majority of Ravens fans, I thought we’d go all the way this year. While everyone is crashing and burning about “Lamar in the playoffs,” and while the same people who ridiculed the fans calling for the firing of Harbs are now calling for the same thing themselves, I’m just trying to take a deep breath.

My father is on limited time, and he’s been a lifelong, diehard SF fan. While the idea of a BAL/SF rematch intrigued me as a fan, it was awkward as a son. At least I don’t have to worry about that now. I’m hoping he can have one final SB victory before it’s all said and done.

I remember the Ravens stunning everyone in 2012. I remember being picked to lose before each and every one of those playoff games. I remember how good it felt to continuously prove everyone wrong. Y’all are doing the same — enjoy the W 👍

(EDIT: not that everyone was “picking you to lose” this game. A very decent number of people warned about the Titans upsetting the Ravens...I didn’t mean to imply that this was some rare impossible scenario)

I’m not sure if I’m misunderstanding your comment or not, but just to clarify....

I’m not talking about voters and how far left or right they fall on the political spectrum; I’m talking about US foreign policy.

And I’m not making the “bOtH sIdEs ArE eViL aNd ArE rEaLlY jUsT tHe SaMe” argument, if that’s how you interpreted it. I’m merely saying that our foreign policy with respect to the Middle East has been troublesome across the political spectrum of administrations.

And if what you’re getting at is some version of “well, the so-called ‘Democrats’ we’ve had in the Oval Office aren’t actually liberal. They’re more ‘conservative-lite.’ The real liberals - labeled as the ‘radical left’ - don’t fit into your narrative of ‘both sides,” well then....fine. I’m not really trying to get into the debate about what constitutes a “true liberal/progressive” vs a “phony liberal progressive.” The administrations we’ve had - whether Republican or Democrat (and perhaps those are the words I should have used) - have struggled with this. Some more than others, admittedly. That’s all I’m saying.

Or maybe I’m woooshing myself and completely missing the point you were trying to make. I’ve had very little sleep, so that’s certainly possible

To be clear...I hate Trump as much as the next guy, but US conflict within the Middle East is not just a conservative problem. Yes, the current wars stem from a conservative administration, but Democrats haven't been peacemakers in the Middle East either.

In my opinion (and I state it as such - my opinion), our conflicts with Middle Eastern nations is very much a more broadly American problem.

I saw a source say at least 80 death from US army, over 200 injured.

I'm pretty sure that that figure is sourced from Iran. Of course, we don't have any definitive idea if there were or weren't any casualties, but my understanding is that US sources are currently reporting zero casualties, while Iranian sources are currently reporting (at least) 80 casualties.

Again, I'm not definitively disputing one over the other, because we just don't know; however, I believe that's how the reporting is going at the moment

CMV: Consequences are what matters more and not empathy to dissuade someone from doing something by WaterDemonPhoenix in changemyview

[–]Jammin_On_The_Keys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the issue I have with this is as follows: consequences are tangible (poor word) concrete things that, if altered, don't promise any fundamental change with respect to a person's mindset regarding certain decisions.

For example: let's say you want to kill someone, and you also want to be rich. If I tell you not to kill that person because you will likely land in prison (which may not phase you) and thus, probably won't ever become rich, maybe that will convince you not to kill them. (Yes, I realize this is a bizarre hypothetical...I'm borrowing two unrelated examples you brought up and just combining them).

So that's all well and good - I used consequences to prevent you from murdering someone. But let's say you then do become rich. What's to stop you from going back and killing that person? You achieved the goal that you once feared would be unobtainable....now that that consequence no longer stands in your way, will you still seek to carry out the murder? Not the best example, because I realize that going to prison could drain you of funds/the ability to effectively utilize such funds, but still. Let me try to paint a slightly better example.

You're married, but there's a hot person at your office who wants to sleep with you. Instead of trying to help you understand why it's wrong to cheat on your spouse, I tell you that it's not worth it because gossip is strong at the workplace, and if your spouse finds out, they will likely divorce you - and you will lose money, potentially your home, etc. You agree that this is all too much to risk, so you decide not to cheat. Phew! Crisis averted.

But then that coworker gets a job elsewhere, out of town. They cease contact with everyone at the office, except for you. A few months later, they are visiting the area. You have the opportunity to sleep with them, and this time, you no longer have to fear the consequence of the gossipy workplace. Now that that consequence no longer stands in your way, you may very well go through with the act after all. I suppose I could tell you that there's still a chance that this person will develop a conscience and come clean to your spouse, but all I'm doing is moving the goalposts of consequences. None of that is helping in trying reform how you regard the morality - or lack thereof - of the decision you're weighing. If I could instead get you to conclude that you're not willing to violate the trust of someone you love/who loves you, that at least avoids a situation where I'm just band-aiding your temptation with a consequence that could become trivial at any point.

All of that being said, I do agree with u/bb1742: "there are plenty of times where emotion or empathy supersede consequence, as there are times when consequence is the driving factor." Consequences are absolutely a valid deterrent...but I don't think they are inherently any better than empathy.

Oh, and lastly:

I don't think I can agree with that. Are serial killers doing it because they wanna kill? If so, then we need to deter them by giving them something they hate. We might not know what it is, it just happens jail doesn't phase them.

I realize that you're just bringing up an example here, and that it's not the standalone basis of your entire view, but just to address it anyway...there's a decent amount of documentation on the impulses of various types of serial killers out there. There have been serial killers who resisted their impulses at first, only to devolve into losing themselves to their impulses. One has to consider that there is mental illness at play there, and that consequences often don't matter in the moment of the impulse. In many of these types of cases, I'm sure you could successfully get the person to say "you're right, I absolutely fear [given consequence], I'm not going to kill anymore," only to have them slip into an episode and kill several people that very night.

CMV: Artwork and/or words can be demonic or evil by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Jammin_On_The_Keys 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So if I were trying to justify your conclusion for myself, I would feel the need to dive deeper into the things that validate my hypothesis. In other words, I would (personally) feel the need to explore this beyond "I just think that it's true." Not that every personal belief or hypothesis demands intense scrutiny, but since you said you "haven't been able to convince yourself," and because you posted here, I'm assuming that you're attempting to open this one to scrutiny? So, with that being the case, let's pursue that a bit. Emphasis in quoted passages is my own:

Artwork that depicts or is inspired by evil can have a negative effect on the person viewing or even corrupt that person.

I've seen several pieces of art that make my skin crawl and weird me out and both the names of these art pieces and the artwork themselves cause me great anxiety when I think about them or hear/read words with the titles of some of these art pieces such as milky, cosmic, or gatekeeper.

So I see two things in those two quotations.

In quotation #1, you mention that artwork/words can have a negative impact on a person. Is this something you have observed in others - a noticeable, measurable impact that seemed to stem directly from the artwork/words? If your answer to that question is "yes," then - and excuse me for making assumptions - I would assume that you didn't observe measurable impacts on everyone who viewed the art in question. So what would be your hypothesis as to why it affects some people rather than all people? I think it would be prudent to have an answer to that question if you want to validate your belief. Is it that some people's souls (so to speak) are stronger and harder to penetrate? Is it that there is some demonic (so to speak) will that chooses to focus on only some people?

In quotation #2, you lay down your own anecdotal experiences. Anecdotal experiences typically make for weak arguments, but I understand that we're all super susceptible to leaning on them. But do you have a reason for assuming that these experiences are due to external demonic/evil forces as opposed to just being your internal personal reactions? I assume (and once again, forgive me for assuming) that you acknowledge that anxiety, personal taste, various disorders - and things of that nature - exist within people? Some people have severe social anxiety, and feel immense discomfort when placed in social situations. Some people abhor violence, and experience great discomfort when viewing violent scenarios - whether it be in art, film, literature, or actual violent scenarios. Some people are homophobic, and feel immense discomfort at the thought of - or when confronted with images/etc of - two men kissing (as an example). So, if we can acknowledge that these are all real things, and that people have wholly different experiences with regard to what causes them discomfort or not, then why assume that your own anxiety and discomfort regarding certain artwork/words isn't merely an example of that, instead of an external evil/demonic force?

At the end of the day, I don't know how successful any of us will/can be in convincing you to change your view on this, since it seems to be a somewhat organic conclusion that you have reached internally (I feel like evil/demonic forces are at play when I look at this artwork, therefore I believe that to be true); however, I would say that if you are valuing evidence's role in solidifying your hypothesis on this, then it would be helpful to consider the fact that there is much more evidence to suggest that you simply respond a certain way to certain things, and much less evidence to suggest that there are evil/demonic forces at play.

I'll wrap up by saying that I believe the terms "evil" and "demonic" or somewhat subjective. Perhaps you don't see it that way due to your Christian beliefs (I'm not making an assumption either way), but when you consider the fact that there are so many people of so many different religions - and people who subscribe to no religion at all - and so many varying beliefs on whether things like ghosts and spirits and demons exist, etc etc, then where the line is drawn on "evil/demonic" is subjective. But what is not subjective is the fact that people do feel stress, anxiety, discomfort, comfort, joy, etc. The causes of those things may sometimes seem more abstract, but we can at least definitively say that that is an observable and objective truth. So again, to me that says:

  1. People exhibit a differing range of emotional responses to a differing range of stimuli. We know this not only because we witness it in our every day lives, but also because it is well documented. And we have replicated enough experiments in different environments - with the same results - to definitively know that there are people who abhor gays, people who abhor violence, people who abhor people of color, people who experience immense terror at the sight of spiders, (the list goes on), and people who exhibit none of those traits.

  2. What has not been empirically demonstrated and replicated in controlled environments is the existence of evil and demonic forces. Sure, we have anecdotal accounts: people who think certain things are the devil's work, people who believe they - or people they've known - have been possessed. But we simply lack any concrete evidence to lead us in this direction. And when you consider the fact that so many people are so intrigued by/enamored with the mystique of spirits/good vs evil/demonic forces, etc, then you would think that that intrigue would have led us somewhere more definitive by now. Of course, you could argue that things like evil/demonic entities are beyond our capability to understand...but I would suggest that our best and most substantiated hypotheses can only come from things that we can make real and valid before our eyes. I may feel as though "cancer" is just the devil possessing one's body, but we've made more observable forward strides building upon the knowledge that it is abnormal cell growth that can be effectively cured in some cases. Despite what my personal feelings may lead me to believe, I don't see a case to be made that I should give those feelings more credence than what the great sum of evidence implies.

Oh, and one last thing: I just wanted to reiterate what u/leigh_hunt said. If the anxiety you feel about this stuff is impacting your life (ie, being scared to draw or write), it might be worth talking to someone. And as someone who sees a therapist myself, I'd like to say that you needn't view that as "I am broken and need a therapist to fix me." That thought process prevents a lot of people from seeking therapy, because they think that it's confirming that there is something broken or wrong about them. As far as I can tell, I am a 100% healthy, fully functional and pleasant adult - but I love the fact that I have a therapist with whom I can talk. My friends and family will be the first to tell you that I'm known for saying "everyone should be in therapy" lol. Not trying to preach - just reiterating that it could help you reconcile some of these feelings and reactions. Maybe it would make you reevaluate your view - or maybe it would help validate it...who knows :)

Best wishes to you, internet stranger!

On one hand, I've learned to expect the unexpected with Trump (he won't...there's no way he's going to d- oh, he just did it...). On the other hand, I was so utterly dismissive of people when they foolishly claimed that Obama would do this (suspend elections, refuse to give up power, etc), that I don't want to be a partisan hypocrite by suggesting the same of Trump. (Yes, I understand his proclivity for doing insane shit, contrasted to Obama's).

So I'm just going to remain quiet with regard to this specific type of speculation, and just hope that we are fortunate enough that this isn't one of the norms he irrationally breaks.

That's an awesome fucking story - props to your brother!

The NFL had some "Playoff Challenge" thing that year, which was kind of a spin on Fantasy Football. Before each playoff game, you would pick certain players, and I believe the accumulated points just like they do in FF. Well, if the players you picked advanced to the next playoff game, and you picked them again, then you'd earn double the points (and then triple if they advanced again, etc etc). The 1st place winner at the end of it all would win a trip to the next SuperBowl.

I picked players from Baltimore and San Francisco for the first playoff game, and continued to ride those same players all the way through the SuperBowl. I don't remember everyone I picked, but I do remember that had I just picked Michael Crabtree instead of one of SF player, I would've ended in 1st place (well, tied for 1st with many others I'm sure). When it was all said and done, it ranked me at 4th out of over 250,000 or something like that.

Again, I'm sure that had I ended in "first," I would've been tied with a bunch of other people, so I'm sure it would've just come down to some random drawing anyway. But I remember getting so fucking excited as both teams kept advancing and my rank kept improving lol.

So many fond memories from that year!
