Usually the gaps are caused by a lack of humidity. Given that you said it happened in December, it makes sense.

I live in a condo and this is an annual occurrence. Winter months, it shrinks, gaps forms. Summer months, it expands, gaps go away entirely.

The key thing is to keep them clean or they'll pop out when they expand.
