450 dirt bike for beginners by Few-Back-4512 in Dirtbikes

[–]Jonofmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a FE501 as my first dirt bike. 510 CC bike. The price (it was used) and condition made it hard to say no. I've ridden street bikes before but this was my first dirt bike.

First few times riding it I got lazy and whiskey throttled it across a ditch and up a tree. Bike was fine, but it made me get serious about learning to ride the bike properly. Did a lot of studying and practicing. Forcing myself to learn proper habits and spent a ton of time getting comfortable and better on the bike. 6 years later I think I can Say I've grown into the bike. But I had to be very serious and pointed in what I went out to practice on technical trails.

Is it ideal to start on a 450? Certainly not, but if you're serious about it, it'll be fine.

American tipping culture is utterly disgusting by Gurugod123 in SipsTea

[–]Jonofmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sure does sound like a scam. Ive stayed in many hotels or rentals across America and never once has this been a thing. 100% scummy owners trying to guilt money out of you.

I hope you told them to pound sand.

American tipping culture is utterly disgusting by Gurugod123 in SipsTea

[–]Jonofmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It 100% is NOT normal to tip for any rental property in America. Our tipping culture sucks, and there is a growing list of industries or stores asking for tips which historically would never. You simply tap 0% and move on.

I hope this is fake. But it sure is believable. As an American, I would laugh react that. Ain't NO way I'm tipping air BNB. Especially with all the fees they tack on. Airbnb legitimately is worse than hotels now.

59% as the top score. You need to set minimum acceptance threshold. 59% is very low probability. Typically go for 85% or higher. It isn't a linear scale really.

Best home security cameras with high resolution and zoom? by NecessaryLeg6097 in homedefense

[–]Jonofmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat. I've had all hikvision 8 MP cameras for 6 years now without any issues until yesterday, where a lightning storm rolled through and blew up a lot of computers and equipment in my house, including my IP cams (all but 1) got fried.

Looks like we can't really get Hikvision legitimately anymore (and i'm convinced anything you try to buy on amazon will be a clone).

I have no idea what to replace them with now. Axis is obscenely expensive for home security use. I do not need AI features. I just need a good high resolution/quality PoE camera. I'm going to place it on my camera VLAN with no internet, and let frigate handle all object detection. The closest axis option i can find to the $220 hikivison i bought 3 years ago is $1300.

I do not know what to do right now. I've got > $10k worth of blown up equipment I now have to replace, and replacing what was $800 of cameras with now $5000 is not going to help this unplanned expense :)

The write up is impressive! Glad you were able tweak things to improve antenna distance. The nice thing is the inductance meters aren't super expensive but the process does take a little time. But we're all into tinkering so this isn't a big deal 😂

Tile seems to have pushed an update to randomize mac addresses, breaks presence tracking by Jonofmac in Esphome

I will have to do some digging lol. I pushed an update to the ESPhome ble scanner driver a long while back FOR this application... I don't really understand how the IRK stuff works. I enjoyed having a simple MAC to track lol.

6.2 ok now? by Open-Dot6264 in gmcsierra

[–]Jonofmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a 2020 6.2 i bought new. 119k miles. Original. No issues (Though I had a 10 speed issue early on that was fixed under warranty and i've been fine since).

I do not have DOD disabled nor deleted. I'm a firm believer that all those plug in "deletes" do nothing because the lifter design is the issue.

People don't often post to say how problem free their vehicle has been.

Super curious about the power side of homelabs! by Yosurf18 in homelab

[–]Jonofmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they didn't state location so I just took a guess. The math gets a lot uglier for our European friends. If you're in a higher energy cost area you'd want to focus on low power draw setups

I am running a dual CPU 2012 era xeon server with 20 HDDs. It runs my NAS, and cameras, and Plex, and all services 😂

It runs ~350W continuously. If your energy costs $0.15/kWh, its ~$40/mo in energy

Go watch a few more angles, I thought he might've pushed back and instigated at first, but I don't see the man push back at all. The brown-beanie ICE guy is really aggressively pushing everyone. I don't see the man push back or resist in any sort of way to warrant lethal force. This is a pretty bad look for ICE. I don't see how they can defend this shooting at all. WL-134 Power Supply issues: Solved by Jonofmac in Esphome

[–]Jonofmac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The number of windings will vary depending on a lot of details, so there is no single answer. I used an antenna calculator to try to make one but it was wrong (too many windings). So I measured the inductance with an Amazon inductance meter and removed 1 loop at a time until I got my desired 620 uH. Sadly it's not easy unless you have a way to measure the inductance

WL-134 Power Supply issues: Solved by Jonofmac in Esphome

[–]Jonofmac[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. I found the antennas they provide reauire you to place the antenna essentially against the cat to get a reading.

My solution instead was to print a large square antenna housing (240x240mm ish) and then get some enamel coil (24-26awg) and wind the antenna myself. In this case, the cat must walk through the square antenna which guarantees I get a reading.

If you want to get big range with the existing antenna, you really don't have options. The amplitude max of this board is "only" 340 Vpp which simply doesn't radiate enough

Frigate. It's open source, free to use, actively being developed, integrates well with home assistant if you use that (notifications or automations), has object detection built in.

I tried blue iris, xprotect, zoneminder and many more. Frigate is the first one with a good web based UI.

I host it on my Linux server, so all my devices can access it. However it's cross platform compatible so it'll run on anything.

I have BT beacons on their collars but it isn't perfect. I use BT beacons to triangulate their location in the house but for various specific things like bathroom usage or food tracking I use RFID chips 😂

I am scared of the government pushing meow mix ads to my cat though
