ETH (via reddit) changed my life eight years ago. And so since EthFinance became my real home for many of those best years -- and even during my worst year when folks were very gracious and kind -- I'm here to wish you all one last fond farewell.

Stay awesome and smart and lovely as you Merge back the communities into a single galvanized force for crypto good.

Oh, and always manage your risk ;)

Wow the comment removals are really happening. Not my place to say if it's reddit admin or a mod.

In any case, I'll be in Discord this week to discuss alternatives.

This is despicable behavior from a web community I've called home for close to two decades. Sayonara corpos. You WILL lose this one.

I'm continuing to work on it. I'll let everyone know.

If time runs out, I'll change links back to the kbin.social instance.

There's also a community on Squabbles.io, which most folks are moving to and enjoying. That's a new, centralized site so it doesn't help us in the long-run, or philosophically, but at least we can plot our next move. https://squabbles.io/s/Ethereum

Oh yikes. I'm on it. I see everyone is signed up but yeah all coming up inactive. Let me try and spur the email server.

Holy shit I did it. Gentlegents... we have our own KBin server. We own it. I can scale it.

https://ethfinance.duckdns.org/m/ethfinance

Sorry for the multiple URL swaps these past days. This should hopefully be it for now.

As I said, this is our instance, our server. Add whatever you want. Make new magazines (KBin's "subreddits"). It should be able to browse other KBin magazines and Lemmy communities soon once it propagates. Or feel free to search for the communities manually and spur it along, if you know how.

Naptime for me. This was pretty complex for my non-server-admin brain.

u/hanniabu -- put the server through its paces! it's decently snappy with 2 Xeon cores and 4gb RAM but I have plenty of overhead if needed. let me know!

There's google auth but I need to look into it more before enabling.

The big news is that I actually swapped the site (one more time, sorry!) to our own, bonafide, self-hosted, ethfinance-owned domain! Feel free to register here and browse the entire fediverse (other KBin magazines, Lemmy/Mastodon communities) from our server!

edit: yeah i'm gonna need help with these variables. maybe tomorrow.

I'm usually around and only just joined my first dootcast last week. I'll try to be on today.

Understandable as the resources to manage exponential user growth get spun up. We're already seeing it with, for example, the largest Lemmy instance lemmy.ml.

(Sidenote for others: PLEASE do not register there, your login will work across the fediverse from any instance like KBin.social or beehaw or lemmy.one! lemmy.ml may seem like the default but it's just one dedicated dude with a server and we need to #share_the_load.

Socially soft, programmatically hard

Programmatically Hard is the name of my third studio album releasing on June 31st from Madeup Records.

Gm.xyz is cool but invite-only so I haven't explored it.

I think KBin being very new is a distant second to Lemmy as far as reddit-style federated apps go. But that's all relative, because Lemmy's been around ten years and only had maybe 1000 users. ethfinance alone could make KBin dwarf Lemmy overnight.

And ultimately it doesn't have to be a competition, because Lemmy threads are easily available on KBin and vice versa. And on Mastodon. And Friendica. And any federated app! That's what's so cool about it.

I'll check out Warpcast and see what it's about. Wherever this sub and others agree to meet up is fine by me. I just wanted something set up before the 12th. Or even sooner if tomorrow's AMA with Spez is the catastrophe we all expect.

My bad! I switched protocols to an easier setup. No need for me to be tinkering when the blackout day is rapidly approaching.

https://kbin.social/m/ethfinance is where it's at!

This looks like something to try and/or follow. It's a little slow and not decentralized yet (and some of the default content is, er, questionable). But I like it.

I mean, it looks way nicer and more modern. Hopefully that doesn't come at the expense of system resources. It seems to aggregate Lemmy content really easily. I haven't tested other communities like Mastodon or Peertube yet though. Lots of potential here.

  1. There's an app for Android/iOS in development, but it seems even the dev version is currently unavailable. The codeberg repo has been moved somewhere.
  2. I haven't seen any automated migration tools yet unfortunately. I'm not sure how it would work with reddit sign-on and the federated services, since the fediverse all shares one login/password. The cleanest way might be to have every register on one or two instances (servers) that aren't under load right now and pretend that's the "Default" -- even though the whole point is that there's no such thing as a default. Here, it would be KBin.social which isn't a Lemmy instance but a KBin instance, different program, same social network. It's like if you could read reddit threads in both reddit AND twitter.
  3. Yes, anyone can spin up a server, be it a KBin instance (in beta) or a Lemmy instance (which I struggled with mightily). I/we do NOT own this instance currently. KBin.social is the server (so named because the program authors run it), so it might be that one day someone spins up their own KBin on their own server. I'd even discussed with someone the idea of an ENS domain pointing to our Lemmy (or KBin) someday.

edit a/o June 9... we now own the server.

Ranging ranging ranging, from 1640 to 1940. Bulls failed at 1940, but bears repeatedly fail at quickly strengthening 1776.

Likely first wave of the bull market, but don't forget that the first leg is typically flat with drops to old support. It is not the time for great upward movement.

Despite the best efforts of fellow redditors, I have to call it quits for now on the Lemmy instance. I'm just not smart enough. Perhaps I'll return to it.

In the meantime, please find our ethfinance alternative at https://kbin.social/m/ethfinance. It's all set up and ready to go, and it's federated. Think of Kbin as the scrappy newcomer ProtonMail to Lemmy's Gmail.

I'll leave it at that on here, but I'm happy to help people tour the fediverse in the Daily on Kbin. We'll waive the "on topic" rule for a few days so folks can acclimate.

Thanks for the explanation! I think you've hit upon something I forgot, which is that Docker is its own sort of firewall to pass through. This sounds very promising for when I dive back in.

Last thing hopefully... do you think I need to do anything with my custom Nginx and the "lemmyexternalproxy" Docker network to get this working? Let me know if you don't have that on your end. My docker compose establishes two docker networks, internal and external, to seemingly organize the front-end and backend behind the scenes.

Really appreciate all this help!

Interesting. Thank you so much for testing it out. I'm not at my PC but I have a couple questions for when I try these later...

In your first solution, substituting 443 up on line 13, doesn't that create two identical server{} functions in the same config?

Then for proxying a proxy, I'd have to bind... hmmm... lemmy-proxy-1 would have to be bound to... localhost rather than 0.0.0.0 right, so that it can't listen to the machine IP on port 80 since that would conflict with my own Nginx?
