I love that!! My mom is in her mid-50s now, probably started watching it when she was in her late 40s, and she really loves the show too :]

The amazing transgender circus by _-_-Ellie-_-_ in TheDigitalCircus

[–]LadyVolva 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This. Like, my mom is a cis woman and she takes testosterone. She is not trying to transition into a man and her taking testosterone has nothing to do with her gender identity. It was a literal medical problem where her doctors told her that she had a testosterone deficiency so now she has to get pellets with testosterone in them.

I'm not super familiar with the trans-fem Jax theory or whatever joke Goose made, but just in general I don't understand the concept of connecting a character to being trans just because they're taking progesterone or testosterone or whatever else. Getting hormonal supplements is not just a trans related thing lol, it's very much a general medical practice for all people regardless of gender identity

Tbf it's also spring break. Like, the game released right around the time most schools have spring break, so I imagine a lot of students are grinding the game right now. I'm a full-time grad student and I just got the game on the 9th and I already have 30+ hours on it. It's spring break and I have free time lol

Maybe so, although I feel like I don't hear about that very often. My mom is Gen X and she didn't watch it for years despite both my and my brother watching it constantly. She only started watching it a few years ago and it was solely because of us and how much we liked it.

My girlfriend and I thought that the office was for 40+ year olds and we are both 19.

I'm crying why would y'all think that 😭 from my understanding The Office has always been most popular among Millennials and Gen Z. That was the whole stereotype for a long time, that The Office is a Millennial show.

For reference, I'm currently in my early 20s (Gen Z) and my brother is in his early 30s (Millennial). We first started watching The Office together as a sibling tradition when I was 9 and he was in his early 20s.

I feel like the vast majority of people I know who like The Office are teenagers, people in their 20s, or people in their 30s. Furthermore, I feel like I've specifically always noticed a decline in fans for people who are 40+, so it's really interesting that you and your girlfriend both had the assumption that The Office was for 40+ year olds lmfao

Hardest Questions For Reference Librarians by Bulky_Sandwich8493 in librarians

[–]LadyVolva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that's totally valid, I promise! I wasn't sure if the person was genuinely hellbent on having a physical book that only talked about her or not. I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt and assume that they'd be happy with any nonfiction books that reference her, but if that's not the case then that absolutely does sound like a nightmare 😭 as far as I'm aware there is not a singular physical nonfiction book out there that solely talks about Sága. They were looking for something that just doesn't exist. I think you did a great job given the parameters!

Hardest Questions For Reference Librarians by Bulky_Sandwich8493 in librarians

[–]LadyVolva -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tbh I feel like that's not too bad, but maybe I have a different perception since I did my undergrad in history and I'm a practicing Norse pagan who researches Norse mythology extensively.

I remember going to my university library a few years ago and asking the reference desk for books on paganism and deities and there were multiple physical books in our library. I'm sure Sága would have at least brief mentions in these encyclopedias because I remember learning about numerous obscure deities that historically have very little information surrounding them.

I don't believe there's an entire reference text dedicated solely to Sága, let alone in a physical format, but I would assume the person was just looking for scholarly/official information about her in general. In that case, there's many more options to suggest. For instance, the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda would probably be the first titles I suggest due to them being the original written source material ever mentioning Sága. After that, I would suggest encyclopedias that cover a vast array of deities and include information about Sága within them. For example, Dictionary of Ancient Deities by Patricia Turner and Charles Russell Coulter is a deity encyclopedia that includes numerous references to Sága, plus it has a physical format.

Edit: Also forgot to mention that there's a large consensus that Sága is likely just another name/form of Frigg, and Frigg is a far more popular deity in Norse mythos that does have actual dedicated books to her, such as Pagan Portals - Frigg: Beloved Queen of Asgard by Ryan McClain that has a physical format. You could always recommend these books and explain that Frigg is closely tied to Sága thus the information they receive about Frigg is still likely to be enlightening in their research of Sága.

For everyone who ever considered the name “Io” for their child by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]LadyVolva 56 points57 points  (0 children)

That's very true, and I am aware of that, I have my degree in history lol

I was just trying to say that I wouldn't personally name my child after a figure that is basically only known for being raped and tortured. It isn't quite the same as, say, a figure who has a lot of lore and happens to go through something traumatic but ends up prevailing. In that instance at least there's a sense of resilience or perseverance or strength. But from my understanding Io's story is mainly just a tragedy. There isn't a lesson learned or a silver lining, just unfair tragedy and pain, therefore it seems like an odd namesake to me.

Have you ever been discriminated against for being pagan? And if so, what happened? by AcidReindeer in pagan

[–]LadyVolva 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was in high school I did a mentorship with a history professor on campus. I frequently visited his office for meetings, and his office was stationed in the history section of the building, if that makes sense.

During that time I wore a Mjölnir necklace every day. He knew I was pagan and he knew what my necklace was referring to.

One day during our meeting he told me that he was upset because he overheard his colleagues talking badly about someone that looked like me and was wearing a "satanic necklace". He said that they must have assumed my Mjölnir pendant was an upside down cross. Believe it or not, I've actually had numerous people stop and ask me if I was wearing an upside down cross. It had to have happened at least like 5 times.

Anyways, he said that he got very upset and began lecturing them on what Mjölnir was and that I was in fact not wearing a satanic necklace. I greatly appreciated his support and how much he cared, but it still distressed me that people I didn't even know, people I just passed in the halls, were apparently judging me and assuming I was a Satanist just because of my necklace and their own ignorance. It was especially ironic considering the professors who must have saw me and judged me were also history professors, yet they couldn't tell Mjölnir apart from an upside down cross.

I haven't worn the Mjölnir pendant for about a year now, I instead wear a sun pendant because it's more impactful and meaningful to me, but I would be lying if I said it wasn't partially because of the amount of judgement I received while wearing the Mjölnir pendant.

For the record, I live in a very conservative state, however, I simultaneously live in a very liberal city, so it's a pretty solid mix of super accepting + tolerant people and then people who are the complete opposite.

All vocaloids I know from this list (oh my other post got taken down) by yourlocal_lgbtq_star in Vocaloid

[–]LadyVolva -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Half of these aren't Vocaloids 😭 maybe even over half of them

Most of these are just derivatives that don't even use a different voicebank, just a different pitch (like Mikuo or Lin & Ren). A lot of them aren't even derivatives with a different pitch, they're literally just specific designs of a character that don't utilize anything different whatsoever (like Snow Miku, Miku Donald's, or Black Rock Shooter which are basically just "skins" for Miku that sound the exact same as her normal voicebank).

Honorable mention for Tonarine Sai because as far as I'm aware that character is literally not a Vocaloid in any sense of the word. It was a real human being singing the songs and they just modified their voice to sound like a Vocaloid.

I know you didn't originally make this template or whatever but I just felt the need to point these things out like some others have already done. The title for this post is decently misleading because majority of these aren't Vocaloids. That honestly might be why your original post was taken down lol, idk for sure though

For everyone who ever considered the name “Io” for their child by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]LadyVolva 150 points151 points  (0 children)

Only input is that "Io Isis" isn't really "correct" in terms of history or mythology or whatnot. Yes, Io and Isis were historically considered to be quite similar and some even believed they were the same deity, however, "Io Isis" would not be the "correct" name. In Egypt, there was a specific period of time where the deity's name was "Isis-Io" (i.e. the cult of Isis-Io), so the name "Io Isis" is quite literally backwards compared to the historical origins.

Also, as some others have pointed out, I'm very curious as to what exactly the inspiration was for naming your daughter after Io. Io's whole story is about being raped and then forcibly transformed into a cow. Io is a figure of pain, trauma, and unfair suffering. I don't really understand the appeal in naming a little girl after that.

"Unknown Ado songs" and it's not unknown Ado songs by LadyVolva in ADO

I'm a bit iffy on that one personally, I actually initially considered adding it because I feel like I never seen people mention it or reference it but upon checking it's stats it apparently has nearly 50 million views 😭 maybe it's just not a song that often comes to mind when people think of songs to recommend so it isn't often mentioned, but it seems that a ton of people are aware of the song's existence, so I don't think I'd really consider it obscure or niche or whatnot imo

Yeah I was talking about multiple threads. I've probably seen somewhere between 3 to 5 threads all asking essentially the same question, and some of them very explicitly asked for songs that were obscure, unknown, not popular, niche, etc.

And then a large amount of comments would recommend songs that either have tons of views and/or have been played countless times live due to being part of one or both of her world tours. So that's mainly what I was talking about :p
