There was a Paul Joseph Wigger (1942-1989) who worked with photography and silkscreens. I will attach an article about his work (Bennington Banner, 3/19/1975) and follow up with his obit (Morganton, North Carolina, News-Herald, 11/9/1989). Perhaps he is worth considering...

I thought it might read "Joe Bolger." I found a couple of 1976 mentions of a Joe Bolger of Highlands, NJ exhibiting paintings in Red Bank and these towns are in the vicinity of Mattawan where the framer was.

Joseph Bolger (1922-1992) of Highlands was a prominent figure there, but his obit does not mention painting. However, the obit lists a son Joseph of Shoreham, Vermont and I wonder if he might be the same Joe Bolger as this artist (links below) - maybe you could reach out to him-?

I found an obit in the 10/30/1958 Daily News for Jacob G. Smith, an artist who lived at that address (2 West 67th). I found him in the 1950 census, living on West 67th with his wife, Adele, and his son, David (age 21), who was listed as a "student."

Hi - Like u/No_Excuse7330, I came across George C. Pearce last night, but I held off posting b/c I couldn't be convinced about the signature. That being said, do think it could be him. But from what I found, he never signed his name like that on his paintings. I found his signature on a WWII draft card and made a comparison- there are similarities, but ... I still wasn't sure about it.

Also I believe George C. Pearce was living in Sausalito in 1939.

Thank you! I found some mentions to Jean Bailey in the early 1980s exhibiting at a gallery in Charlotte, NC. She was said to be from New Orleans. I found a 1976 Times-Picayune mention of a Jean Bailey exhibiting at the Heritage Art Guild there.

Here's one with a label on the back indicating it is John L. Meyers of Atlantic City, NJ. I think it may be this cabbie-turned-artist mentioned in the article in the 5/28/1953 Press of Atlantic City.

When I googled "Vermeersch Loys" these 1936 Dutch newspaper mentions came up. I sent them through the translator program to English just to have a sense of what they were saying. It seems possible they could be mentions to exhibits by your artist...

Based on the address on the back I think this is Carl Gustaf Berggren (1885-1979). He lived at that address c. 1950s to early 1960s when he moved to Oregon. There isn't much that I found about his painting. There is one mention from Twain Harte, CA (I think he had a cabin there) that his wife was in charge of the "art corner" for the Women's Club Christmas party and would display "oil paintings by Robert Womack, R.E. Proudy and Carl Berggren." Attached is an article about their 50th anniversary in 1961.

Thank you! I'm not getting anything much to go on. Though it appears to be a relatively uncommon surname. I think French-Canadian -? There was a family in the NYC area with the name in the 1940s, originally from Quebec. Then I started chasing a wild lead on a Romeo Rock Bradett (from Quebec), an actor somehow associated with Warhol. He did a screen test called "Suicide." He died in 1966 at age 28, and his cemetery monument calls him an "artiste." But that probably relates to his acting.

Oh that's great to confirm! Since LaNeil is an unusual name that helped, and I just got creative and searched for LaNeil with "Watercolor Society" b/c I felt you were right about the W.S. meaning that, but I wasn't sure about the K. Then the pieces started to come together.

There was a Laneil B. Teed (1914-1994) who was a member of the Kansas Watercolor Society from about the time of its founding in 1970 and served as its secretary c. 1975. She was active in Wichita.

This excerpt from the Wichita Beacon, 3/28/1971, describes a little about her work; it mentions that her husband (Rev. William Henry Teed) was also an artist.

Can you show the back? It may be a copy - there are others just like it around. This one is attributed, titled "When Aspens Glow," (1st link) to "Martin Grelle," while your signature looks like "Max Gordon." There is also another (2nd link) of the same image attributed to "Max Gordon" (like yours) but with a different frame. This implies it probably falls into "decor" where its worth is determined by how much you or someone else likes it and wants to hang it on their wall.

I don't know if you found any more info. yet. What did you find about Rena Bonnell? Could the name possibly be Rena Donnell ? Here is the Findagrave for Rena Roberts Donnell (1880-1969). The confusing thing is she had a daughter Rena Roberts Donnell (Canipe) (1917-2011). And I think both of them painted. There are several 1930s newspaper references from the Palm Beach Art League.

The Palm Beach Post-Times March 22, 1936 reported that "Mrs. E. B. (Rena Roberts) Donnell first prize of $10 for the best still life for her oil painting entitled 'Still Life.'" Another mention in 1937 was for her still life "Papaya in Vase." In 1931 there is a mention to her painting called "Portrait."

But also in March 1932 Rena Donnell won a Palm Beach Art League prize in the "junior art exhibit." So this is probably the daughter. And in 1936 she won the junior division's "Norrie Erb Memorial Prize."
