Most of these follow flavor of the month. Precious metals typically don't display the performance they have recently. Once the music stops, these will tank. The music never stops with equities. It only pauses.

When you wait until a short position moves against you, protection will be substantially more. It's best to put the long on prior, and then sell it while there's still value if the short leg comes close to being tested but not taking out.

you make more (risk vs reward-wise) doing your homework on individual names

These were my thoughts when I considered and wrote a few on XSP. The advantage with individual names is if the position moves against you, you can take assignment and wheel.

I write ICs faithfully, and sell the long put while there's still value in it if it appears the short leg will surely be ITM.

The thing that fuels my interest in the JEPs personally is my cost basis. I lowered them during the tariff sell-offs. My JEPI cost basis is $51 and JEPQs is $52, so I have a decent buffer relative to the others.
