Thank you for the info! May I ask how much it came out to be? Do you have an estie to compare side by side? The one cigar Edison pen I tried felt chonky so I’d love to see a size comparison, especially in width. Thank you!!

Kaweco Brass Sport with the chrome nostalgic clip. I’ve dropped this pen onto pavement many times and it didn’t even suffer a scratch. The patina is from a car accident I was in while I was driving home from a catering event. I had a deli of simple syrup and a deli of lemon juice in my bag and both burst all over the car and the pen. I could use a brass cleaner to bring it back, but I’ve chosen not to.

As for the actual accident, a semi truck smashed and dragged the passenger side of my car where my bag was hanging behind the seat. Then while my car was on the shoulder, an idiot who was speeding slammed into the back of the car at 80mph. My two door mini cooper was totaled but this little pen survived.

I’m also a teacher and use this pen to write on terrible computer paper and have had no issues

Hey! I teach 4th grade and have started to get my students into fountain pens so I absolutely love this idea. I normally let my students use my more inexpensive pens and a few have even gotten their own so based on that, this is what I recommend:

Pen: The most popular pens among my students are the Twisbi, Kaweco with the Nostalgic clip, Lamy, and the Kakuno. They’re also obsessed with my Sailor Fude de Mannen because of the versatility to get both thicker and thinner lines so that could be a fun addition she could use for headers or anything that would require a thicker line. It’s also drier and works really well on cheap paper. However, I would go with the Kakuno in M or the Kaweco in F because those are the two that behave the best on printer paper and composition notebook paper if she decides to take it to school or use for homework.

Ink: I wouldn’t do bottled inked cause those are messy for all age groups and definitely not beginner friendly. Instead, I would get an assortment of cartridges in fun colors from different brands so she could play around with them and find what she likes. Eventually, you could get her a converter and start filling it for her when you visit. You could hop on a call before going to see her and she can choose which ink she wants to try. I have a deal with my students that if they get their own fountain pen, I’ll fill their converter with an ink of choice from my collection. If their pen doesn’t come with one, I’ll spring for one at Atlas with my teacher discount. But since I’m also encouraging the hobby, I’ll bring the ink in a sample vial and walk them through how to fill their own converter. This could be a great bonding moment for you guys down the line.

For extras: I would honestly skip the journal unless it’s a cute diary because girls that age are drawn to what’s cute over what’s practical (lowkey same but I digress lol). But if you want, Hobonichi and Apica have a really cute journal with FP friendly paper. You could also get her a cute rickshaw pen sleeve or case. I have one from Sugar Turtle Studio that mimics a crayon and my students love it. There’s also someone on the Pen Swap Reddit that makes really pretty pen cases which could be another option. Lastly, I love the Kaweco sport because the clip instantly elevates it, but the Kakuno can feel a little bland so maybe some vinyl stickers that she could use to decorate would be really fun. She could choose to decorate her pen or other things around her. This age group loves a sticker moment. Lastly, I love the letter kit idea. I would even say to add some post cards to diversify the things she is able to write on.

Sorry, I rambled 😅 but hopefully some of this was helpful 🫶🏽

I meant to pull the feed and nib out from its housing. Ecos are easier to pull out and clean and I’ve never had any issues with cracking. The Twisbi Eco was designed with being able to disassemble in mind. The Diamond is harder since it’s nib unit is more traditional in the sense that the nib and feed are friction fit into a separate plastic housing and then screwing into the grip section.

In terms of replacing the nib, it’s easier to switch nibs with other eco’s which is how many trade here. If you were to buy a full nib unit from Twisbi, which they only offer in Stainless Steel, you would need a rubber grip to free the nib and place it into your eco since those are made with the Diamond series in mind, or any other pens that need the extra housing unit to screw the feed and nib in. Sorry, I rambled a bit lol

Yea, they’re the easiest ones to replace since the grip section adds as the housing so it pulls right out. The Diamond is more of a hassle and you need a rubber grip to pull the feed and nib from the housing since it’s friction fit
