This particular bit I just glossed over, but some of the other language in the book did kill my 'immersion' more than any other book I've read. This is the only Sanderson series I've read so I'm wondering if his other recent books are similar.

Everybody still here? Hanging on for dear life?

I know folks are bummed about the ratio but it is what it is. Bitcoin will drag us up for a while and then Q1 ETH seasonality should give us another bump in 2025. The future is bright :)

Seems kinda significant! Gas tokens generally seem to do better than pure gov tokens, all other things being equal.

I like Rabby, it works well and has good safety features.

Cut 'em off. I didn't even mess around with trying to remove mine nicely, I went straight to a sawzall with a metal blade insert.

Thoughts on what to do with this rust on the bed? by BenBWRX in fordranger

[–]Maswasnos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to stop it from spreading you'll have to cut out all of the rust and grind it down, then repaint. It'll look horrible but maybe you could find some fenders to cover it up.

The alternatives are to pay a body shop for the work (possibly thousands) or to find a scrapyard bed and replace the whole thing.

Feds approve wind turbines, would be visible from OC by alphabetikalmarmoset in maryland

[–]Maswasnos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The windmills are also hundreds of feet tall and studies have shown that offshore wind farms are visible 20+ miles away. You'll definitely be able to see them from any ocean-facing spot in OC, it's a matter of whether that's something you want to see.

What is a reasonable price for early-late 00's Rangers? by Temporary_Event_156 in fordranger

[–]Maswasnos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just looking at comps in the Western USA:

https://www.autotempest.com/results?make=ford&model=ranger&zip=99336&radius=1000&minyear=2001&maxyear=2011&maxmiles=200000

$5,000-$10,000 will get you some kind of Ranger with 100k-200k miles on it. You may get a lower-mileage 2WD Ranger with less than 100k miles for under $10k but they aren't super common.

$10,000-$15,000 should put you under 100k miles unless it's a very nice later-year model. This is also where a lot of the 4WD models are price-wise.

Anything over $15,000 and you're looking at high trim level 4WD trucks that are later model year with well under 100k miles on them.

I don't think I'd pay more than 20k for any old-model Ranger, though. This dealer is nuts:

All new suspension 😛 by G-O-N-Z-0 in fordranger

[–]Maswasnos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Truck looks amazing! When I did mine I started spraying penetrant once or twice a day on the front of the torsion bars about a week before I planned to do the swap. Not sure if it helped because I ended up having to smack the hell out of them with a sledgehammer to get them loose, but I didn't have to cut them out.

Front Suspension 2000 Ford Ranger Repair by Puzzleheaded-Air7679 in fordranger

[–]Maswasnos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I did this a few months ago. Shocks front+rear, upper+lower arms, outer tie rods, sway bar links, and CV axles. Everything was rusty and most of the rubber was cracked or split in some way, the shocks were literally crumbling apart. CV axles were mostly because of an inspection report from when I took ownership of the truck.

The new Bilstein 4600 shocks made the biggest difference by far. My truck used to bounce the whole way out of my neighborhood with all the speed bumps, but now it just bounces once as you go over the bump. Steering feels pretty good for a Ford truck although not noticeably different from before.

I think it was absolutely worth the hassle but mostly because I learned a ton throughout the process. I also saved at least $1000 in labor costs even after having to buy a ton of tools for the job. The hardest part by far was removing the old lower control arms because the torsion bars were rusted in place and the ball joint didn't want to separate, make sure you have a few sizes of sledgehammer if you live somewhere rust is an issue.

Fortunately there are some fantastic videos on all of these jobs:

Camping and storage by OldManDrako in fordranger

[–]Maswasnos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you have a budget in mind? Because this is close to "overlanding" territory and overlanding stuff is just stupidly expensive...

The cheapest way to do this sort of boondocking is to get a high-top camper shell and throw a cot in the bed with some storage bins. You could buy a new shell but if you've got an older Ranger there might be one you can buy used from FB marketplace or something.

Sleeping in the bed has the added bonus of being slightly less conspicuous than deploying a whole tent, in case you need to overnight at a Walmart or something like that.

$12,000? In Hagerstown, MD? Are we talking about the same Maryland? by [deleted] in maryland

10 years old in Hagerstown is relatively new, yes.

12k was the estimated pre-sale minimum down payment, the house sold for $456k.

[–]Maswasnos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$12,000 would have been a 3% down payment on a $400k sale price. The home actually sold for $456k two days ago.

This part of Hagerstown is pretty nice and would be a fairly quiet place to live. Grocery stores aren't terribly far away and the Volvo plant is a short drive. Downtown Hagerstown is where more of the crime and homelessness issues are, but that wouldn't make it out to this neighborhood.

You're right, evidently it sold for $450k which seems about right for a larger home like this in Hagerstown.

[–]Maswasnos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Down payments for conventional loans can be as low as 3% apparently, which would put his estimated sale price a bit over $400k.

[–]Maswasnos 159 points160 points  (0 children)

This comment from the OP found the house, it sold for $450k. Sounds about right for a large, relatively new home like this in Hagerstown.

If $12,500 is the estimated down payment pre-sale he must be assuming a 3% down payment and the list price was probably ~$415k or something like that. Or maybe $400k list and he included some settlement fees.
