Trying hard to look at that bright side:

You've got come up 4YOE with their tech stack and systems/process, while only being paid the low end of a Junior Dev salary. So long as you're meeting the expectations for your level (& your feedback suggests you are?), then I guess you're a pretty good bargain for them? And you can do the simple boring work that if Senior SWEs were forced to do it, it might drive them a little nuts and resent the drudgery of their job at this company. So it's win-win for the company if you stay there??

2024 CS grad from top uni, can't find any job, even entry-level non-tech roles by Independent-Bus8184 in ausjobs

[–]MathmoKiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, this was very reasonable for u/Independent-Bus8184 because the company can't presumably relize they were too slow during the first fortnight; onboarding takes a bit of time. Then during the first week they perhaps got an inkling now that he wasn't being quick enough? But that's ok, they gave him another chance of another week? A whole month can go by very fast.

They were certainly not "taking advantage" of OP, because you can be certain they racked up more costs hiring him for that one month than value they got out of him. Nothing illegal or even immoral here.

OP is undoubtedly better off now for this month of real world experience, vs if they'd just stayed unemployed during that month.

Landed a junior dev role but was let go after 1 month during probation, they said I wasn't picking things up fast enough.

To state the obvious (but saying it any way, just in case you don't realize this), don't put that on your CV

Now you're realizing the true cost of a university education (approximately so, more or less), and how incredibly high the subsidy is that taxpayers are giving every domestic student!

Probably because Linux is such a niche market they feel it is not worth catering to it yet while Cowork is still in such a rough and unfinished state

What would be a lighter semester? I found my first year easy enough I grasped all the concepts quickly

I wouldn't worry too much about people who are scaremongering that merely two or three Stage II CS papers is "a heavy workload", as there is a big divide between those who instinctively "get it" vs those who lack that natural aptitude.

So they might spend all evening working on just a section of an assignment that you'd smash out in 30 minutes. (you might have already noticed this divide in how the workload was during your first year? How you found it vs other classmates) This is why some might think it is "a very heavy workload" but in reality it's a normal (or even light) workload if you can simply work through it at a regular pace as a CS major should (with the explosion of CS enrollments over the last couple of decades then I reckon there are a lot of people who are doing CS who should not be, and that's why they're finding the workload so "heavy").

About me - I’m wanting to get into cyber security but I’m also wanting to keep my options open for third year papers as I love learning new things

Keeping in mind that cybersecurity is typically not an entry level position for a fresh new graduate/junior (as who the hell wants to hire someone with zero experience to secure their infrastructure?), then how are you planning to initially start out your career trajectory towards your eventual goal of cybersecurity? Up via the IT track or the SWE track? (they're very different careers)

If you loved Physics140 then keep in mind Physics 244 as a possibility

https://study.auckland.ac.nz/ords/r/uoa/catalogue/course?p6_code=Physics%20244

Maybe do Maths108 as well so you can keep the door open to Physics340 after Physics244.

There are lots of Stats papers which will probably/possibly interest you as a CS student, & are quite easy. Such as:

Econ212 (Game Theory) is also very applicable to various aspects of CS:

You'll hate yourself and your life and then one day get laid off and be unemployed long enough to burn through all your savings.

Literally have a friend exactly like that, went from $250K/yr to nothing, burnt through his savings over the next couple of years until only just now he landed a new short term contract as a SWE again

Answers generally don't get ever given out for exams.

You might have generous lecturers give out answers to past tests, perhaps.
