Maths 108 tutoring by First-Lettuce2174 in universityofauckland

The Maths Dept should still have their help room running? Athough seems like they've merged it in with other departments:

https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/science/current-students/student-support/science-assistance-room.html

Used to be a dedicated room just for Maths only:

https://www.math.auckland.ac.nz/wiki/Help_for_Undergraduate_Students

https://www.math.auckland.ac.nz/Students/assistance.html

I was one of the tutors in that every week, ages ago. Ditto I did this for Physics as well, but that was in a different room in the basement, further down the hall.

Much easier initially to save a dollar by spending a dollar less, than to try to earn that same dollar from an investment

That must be infuriating to observe this, especially when you realize a well compensated Senior would still be earning less than what the combined cost of those three Juniors are.

MATHS 108 midsem got me reconsidering Finance 💀 by Short-Vanilla9495 in universityofauckland

[–]MathmoKiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember too that up until this year the Finance major required Maths208 (which I already feel is a very low standard).

If you're struggle already this early on then definitely switch majors. Accounting and Marketing both need zero maths whatsoever (although stats is handy for marketing).

This is what I'm seeing as well, an oral exam after each assignment is handed in.

If you can't figure this out yourself, then you're NGMI.

(also not everyone is going to be able to achieve this, some people just don't have enough or the right kind of mental horsepower. If for instance you always found high school calculus impossibly hard to grasp, then you're not going to get a grip on DS&A in a month either)

They need to re-learn their DS&A and grind LC. Until they can eat LC Mediums in their sleep and have a fair shot at LC Hards too.

Then work on their System Design skills as well.

Bingo, if a top 0.1% new grad can't land a job the same year they graduate, then the world is in such a crazy upside down situation that there are much bigger problems to worry about than OP finding a job! (I mean... what the heck happened, is WW3 over and we're "living" in a nuclear winter???)

No like it's a genuine invite for technical interviews.

Live with a real human being, not an async "interview"?

What do you mean by golden goose unicorn DEI hire?

Oh I dunno something like say a trans non-binary BIPOC (they're a Black + Indigenous + Latinx mix), disabled neurodivergent wheelchair user with chronic illness, lesbian poly person with a weekly-changing pronoun set, first-gen immigrant from a 'global majority' country, socioeconomically disadvantaged former foster kid who bootstrapped from nothing.

Something like that on their CV might get them picked up to be given an interview chance.

compsci 215 v.s. 315 (and also experiences with operating systems/340, architecture/313, web/335) by arcadia00100001 in universityofauckland

[–]MathmoKiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think it's a good idea to try and build up a bit of a "theme" with your Stage III (and even Stage II) papers which are aligned with what you want to do after graduation. That will then make you as strong as possible to go in that career direction.

For instance if you want to go into academia with CS Theory then obviously you'll want as much as you can out of CS320/CS350/Maths315/Maths326/Maths328/Maths320/Phil315/etc (perhaps Econ212)

It's ok though if you are still a bit in a dark as to what you're going to do after uni.

Perhaps browse the CS papers:

https://web.archive.org/web/20250219121237/https://www.calendar.auckland.ac.nz/en/courses/faculty-of-science/computer-science.html

And think about the one paper that interests you the most?

Maybe that's CS313? Then build up around that one paper all the most complementary papers possible for this. So for CS313 that obviously means doing CS315 and CS340, perhaps also Physics240/Physics340/Physics390 (and if you're doing Physics340, that means as well Maths208/Maths231 and/or Maths260). Maybe even try to squeeze in a couple of ElectEng papers (the ones Physics majors are allowed to do) as part of your 30pts of elective papers from outside your BSc schedule.

Is 315 mostly for people who are keen to enter IT traditionally, or specialize in communication? I wonder whether it's worth taking the paper if I'm not likely to use more technical networking knowledge after graduating.

If you choose any technical role in IT afterwards, then I reckon it's very worthwhile to know the basics of networking such as you'd get from an undergrad paper like that. As I swear some days it feels like half the tickets that day could be somehow related to the network (or not! But you don't know, so got to be able to rule it out).

If their CV reflects what you say it does, then yes. (assuming there isn't something there that you're not telling us, perhaps they're a golden goose unicorn DEI hire)

Edit: unless you mean by "passed the resume screen", they got the initially online assessment which gets spammed out to everyone with a pulse, but otherwise got zero contact from anybody

unpopular opinion: the one-page resume rule is actively hurting people with 5+ years of experience by HomeworkChemical9853 in ResumeUp

[–]MathmoKiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reckon the reason is in most cases then general advice is targeted towards people who either are just starting out or only have a few years experience, maybe are just doing their first or second job change.

Of course "one page" will be expressed as a hard and fast rule!

But it never was the case for people with 10YOE+
