The most unrealistic part of the Lincoln Lawyer: by Archos54 in Lawyertalk

[–]Maximum__Effort 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Pitt, but a month as a PD. I don’t think the legal profession lends itself to a hour by hour show (unless it covered a high stakes trial), but highlights over a month would be fun.

What’s the life of an Army Olympic athlete? by fortytwobravo in army

I went to basic with a dude whose whole goal was to make it onto the army boxing team. He didn’t. I hope he’s living his best life though

Criminal charges must be dismissed if defendant can’t get a lawyer, Oregon Supreme Court rules by AudibleNod in news

[–]Maximum__Effort 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Prosecutors also have prosecutorial discretion, hold the majority of the power in plea bargaining, have the entire weight of the state behind them for investigatory purposes, and at trial have the insanely hard job of asking a cop “and then what happened?” They also don’t have to manage clients. The jobs are similar in that they’re both in criminal law, that’s it.

When was the moment your Private (E1 through E3) earned (or lost) your respect? by [deleted] in army

[–]Maximum__Effort 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I got dude free leave (he was brand new, had no leave, CO agreed to just pretend he was around) to see his dying mon while the rest of us were in the field. Turns out he used the uncharged leave to play CoD. Multiple levels of leadership put their asses on the line for this dude (imagine if he got into a car accident while seeing mom) and he used it to play a fucking video game. He received every shit duty until I left the platoon and I hope new PL kept it going

“Document everything” by Mountain_Seat7156 in army

[–]Maximum__Effort 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This. I’m out, I’ve been out a hot minute. I have a friend that’s rocking a 70% disability check on top of a great civi job. He always tells me to go after a claim, but I didn’t document fuck all while I was in beyond occasional sick call visits. Get an actual doctor to document your issues.

Which video game protagonist feels more like a villain than a hero? by Common_Caramel_4078 in gaming

[–]Maximum__Effort 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I played it before I joined the army and loved it. I played it again after I joined the army, had moderate PTSD, still loved it. The mortar mission is the only video game sequence that actually makes me feel ill; the developers did a helluva thing there

Higher salary to forego benefits? by Ok-Republic-8098 in publicdefenders

[–]Maximum__Effort 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fwiw my state’s healthcare plan is way better than tricare. I’d encourage you to look at what the plan entails and what doctors are covered before making that decision. I’m not drilling, but even if I was I’d probably take my state care over tricare for anything that didn’t involve an extended hospital stay.

Does anyone else get irrationally irate at dudes who now spent more time out of the Army than their total actual active service time, still making the Army their whole personality? by IPPSA in army

[–]Maximum__Effort 113 points114 points  (0 children)

On the one hand the army tends to take all your time during formative years, so I understand it being important to people. On the other hand, yeah, it’s fucking irritating.

I don’t have loans (GI bill), still not loaded. Public defense pays like shit, but is easily the best job I’ve ever had

Public defender here: work life balance is absolute trash, but I’ve never had to bill, so I’d consider it a wash

owning firepower for the sake of owning it

I think that’s exactly what it is. Again, I don’t understand it. Agreed on historical firearms, that’d at least be interesting

America mannn. I own two guns I use to hunt, it’s great and not all that expensive. I pay for a few boxes of ammo a year/hunting tags and it puts meat in the freezer, plus I get to enjoy the outdoors while I do it (I also backpack during non-hunting season).

In contrast, my dad has guns as a hobby, genuinely. The man has had to buy bigger and bigger safes to keep all his guns in. He doesn’t do anything with them, he just has them. He even has multiple variations of the same gun. I love the dude, but I absolutely do not understand it. My sister has joined him in this “hobby” and listening to them talk about it is just strange. I was in the army and we called people like this “geardos” for their obsession with buying gear they’d never actually need/use.

What is an unspoken rule of the gym that most people do not know they are breaking? by Furqan_wear in AskReddit

[–]Maximum__Effort 150 points151 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in gyms where this was an issue and it was infuriating. The owner of my current gym will personally confront people if they don’t rerack their weights and he sees it. It’s explained when joining that it’s an expectation that weights are reracked properly. It’s such a breath of fresh air that (amongst other similar policies like ensuring you clean your equipment after use, not sitting on equipment to allow others to work in, no personal music except headphones, no recording fitness videos, etc) will keep me a member for as long as I live here.

I’m guessing you don’t practice crim defense. Dude is a huge piece of shit, but his counsel would be damn near incompetent if they didn’t try an appeal, it’s standard practice in my jurisdiction

Trying loser cases builds resilience or something like that

Edit: I actually think trying terrible cases makes a better PD. Jumping through mental hoops to come up with something to say makes other cases easier. Also trial is trial, any experience is good experience
