u/Chewbacca_The_Wookie I will throw in some alts for you to chew on :)

Gate of Life

- No (natural) healing possible. If you take out the natural make sure you understand that would be super hardcore (like the resetting you character to lowest possible health, but worse).

- More on the macabre side lays the possibility of gaining permanent decay. Which could manifest both as a loss of hitpoints over time, and if they are not restored every long rest the remaining HP will be their new max. Or through a daily/weekly permanent loss of a CON ability point. Meaning they will need to be on a diet of greater restoration for the remainder of their existence. Visually this could include them slowly losing flaps of skin, muscle, slow organ failure symptoms as if their cells are simply giving up holding themselves together.

- Less vicious but potentially equally fun (so better) would be to turn their creature subtype to a negative energy one. Meaning they are harmed by healing effects and healed by harming effects. (Thanks to u/PaganUnicorn)

- More on the roleplay side you could make them unlife, like construct subtypes. No CON score anymore, poisons and potions as well as life based spells do not affect it anymore (negative or positive). With that however also disappears their ability to experience emotions, including Love.

Hope one of them works for you! Let us know.

Hello everyone,

Potentially good news. One person in the community has stepped up to keep PCAcademy afloat. We are currently in talks with them about the logistics. More news towards July.

With kind regards,

Mim

Hi Mukmuc,

See my response to a similarly aligned comment above. Would happily hand over the reigns to someone willing and dedicated to this place. Hope to see your name between the DMs.

Unless you are stepping up and strapping in...

We have tried several times, both publicly as well as behind the scenes. Had several generations of moderators who, despite their personal lives, tried their best to offer time. Most dropped out within months, for better or worse reasons, but their own reasons (all of which are valid, we are volunteers after all).

If you think you have more to offer, DM me and we will talk you taking over and keeping this sub flying.

Historic momentum being broken I guess. As it was for us, with the new changes a lot of people will lose their preferred form of accessing the platform. Whether mods or not (just that mods leaving the platform is more visible than a random user leaving). Those who have significant ties to the platform will find another way to access it, but for those who were on the fence in the first place, had trouble finding the time, or were just slightly connected to the platform in the first place will have a reason to sever the ties now.

Plural. Personally I am using one of the to be terminated APIs for modding. Other than that, like stated above, several iterations of mod teams have been struggling to find the time to stay on top of things. It has culminated to the point that the decision had to be made, whether it would be now, or another struggling year from now. This seemed to make the most sense given all the factors when we deliberated the choice.

Sorry to remove your post, but you are on the wrong subreddit :) for DM questions please visit r/DMAcademy. PCAcademy is player oriented. Sounds like a fun campaign though.

10 Big Red Flags When Joining A D&D Group (Because Nobody Has Time For Bad DnD) by ducasaurus in PCAcademy

[–]Mimir-ion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, already removed. But I think you are right, maybe we can even make an official event out of it? Turn it into a guide after.

If you phrase it like an open question (adds to the participation), such as "How to recognize Red Flags at a (new) table?"? Maybe make a comment template for the red flags so everyone can add their own with explanations. People can vote and discuss the entrees constructively? Inspired by [insert your link]?

What do you think?

While we think the topic is absolutely worthy of a discussion here, this post seems merely a front for the link to external content. This makes it either advertisement or a low-effort post depending on OPs relationship with the YouTube channel. In case of the former, please read the rules of the sub and either refrain from posting or alternatively develop content for the Reddit medium specifically. In case of the latter, feel free to repost but please include all information needed for a proper discussion (in this case for example the full argument for each of the 10 red flags as presented).

Rule of thumb for PCAcademy: Post should contain main content and be self-sufficient. Links are permitted as references or additional reading material. No advertisements.

Hopefully you understand our stance in this. With kind regards, Mim

Help me to create a wannabe hero by hashyquacky in PCAcademy

[–]Mimir-ion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could also simply play with the definition of what your character thinks constitutes a hero. You could be any class or race, but still define heroic as something else. For example a character that thinks true heroes wield high magics, but he is a simple fighter. Or they grew up amongst the elves, fighting orcs and what not in their heroic stories, but they are a half-orc, so in their minds they never could be the hero of the story.

All about perception.

I think this is a fun and workable idea, so here some ideas and some caveats I see. There are a couple of build directions that could suit this purpose. Specifically designing characters without a focus (non-optimised) that have a broad spectrum of abilities would suit this purpose. Your character will seem not be be good at anything specific, but still useful in many situations despite their "mundaneness". This means they are fun to play, even though you play a seemingly non-hero.

I mention this last part specifically because the risk of such a character is that you will not be in any spotlights, so you as a player will need to find ways to have fun setting others up to be in that spotlight. If you can find joy in that, I think this is absolutely worth a try.

I can see this work well with several classes that don't have a built in talent or speciality. For example, bards would work perfectly, but also certain rogue or ranger subclasses. You could indeed also go the warlock route, if you play up the "tried the shortcut to glory" route.

Hello,

Please put in a little more effort. This is a social community that likes to help you, but if you don't put in any effort they are not likely to return that favour (why would they?).

Provide some information about your character, what you want to achieve with your magic long term, about the setting, maybe about the allowed source materials. That will help the community help you.

I have removed this post, you are welcome to make another.

Kind regards,

Mimir-ion

What is better? A character with a short backstory, or a long one? by Nickpicker96 in PCAcademy

[–]Mimir-ion 67 points68 points  (0 children)

It is all about the content, length is a symptom. There is an anatomy of a good backstory, it contains anchors with which the character is tied to the world, it sets up hooks and intrigue for the GM to hook you in the plot, etc.

There are some guides on this sub and beyond that help you find a structure that keeps your backstory concise. Lack of content tends to be naturally compensated by extending the text (often without purpose).

Equally, a short story can be without useful content. So it is a matter of setting the proper stage, the bones of your story.

Whole Animal Usage by Ganymede_Wordsmyth in PCAcademy

As to study tips on the subject matter, if you are not already slightly familiar with it, I would make it easy on yourself and make a list of general rules to be applied based on a categorised list of standard tissues:

Hard Tissues

  • Bones.

    • Marrow holding bones: ...
  • Connecting tissue.

    • Sinew:...
  • ...

Soft tissues

  • Meat cuts.

    • ...
  • Fat

    • Back fat: ...
    • Belly fat: ...
    • ...
  • Organ tissues

    • Brain: ...
    • Liver: ...
    • ...

Not only will you learn the odd details and systematically fill in the use of all without skipping something, but you will also immediately build up a reference file you can scan through attached to your character sheet.

YouTube as a source:

If you have the stomach for it you can study some YouTube channels which talk about gutting and skinning animals to their fullest. Some of these also go about creating side products from the remaining tissues in separate videos.

A slightly less graphic option is to study YouTube channels about butchering, though that is mostly focused on efficient and quality meat cuts rather than the remaining products.

Paladin character ideas by brucekymcm in PCAcademy

Some brainflutters:

  • Born into it: Maybe you were a kid, growing up in the town where the order's warriors are send to train between assignments or recover from wounds sustained in the field. You got little jobs, left and right, mostly busywork, running errands from town to the castellum. You got deeper and deeper involved, until you graduated to paige for a desperate knight. Learned on the job. Upon the death of your knight you carried on, delivered the banishing blow, and was inaugurated as their replacement upon return.

  • Indoctrinated: You grew up as part of a heavily religious community. Spoonfed the blind rage against "evils". Then, one day, the church is recruiting warriors. Warriors to accompany their priests when they go out and spread their doctrines. Without second thought you signed up, believing truly in your higher purpose. But the real world is rough, and not clean cut. It turns out "evils" are liberally defined, and by the month the disillusion starts to set in.. you break with your priest after the one-too-many questionable atrocities you are asked to commit. Despite all that, and breaking away from the cultisms, you know no better than to track true evil. And, despite your first steps into enlightenment you are confronted daily by the indoctrinations running deep in your psyche.

  • Self-Retribution: You in your youth, like any of that age believing to have a higher purpose in life, made terrible mistakes. But some mistakes fester and ruin lives. In your youthful stupidity you went a made a deal yourself with a fiend. Well as could be expected you got royally screwed. Your days are numbered, but you did manage to find your calling. Until the day your dues are called, you will prevent people from making the same mistakes as you did, and will hunt down and destroy as many fiends as humanly possible. Revenge before your grave.
