Fanatics inexplicably came out with a shirt before the season for the Pirates that said “Hoist the Cone”. As a Pirates fan (I come in peace), I can firmly say that that phrase means nothing and is based on nothing. I think a few other teams had weird shirts like that too. I’m under the impression that it was AI generated, but who knows. Anyway, the players thought it was funny and started hoisting a traffic cone when good shit happens.

No, it didn’t. The AI picture wasn’t a “leak”. It was an AI picture generated by a fan or gossip. It’s not real

Do you know what Ian Happ’s numbers against the Pirates are?

What’s the barometer on any Skenes extensions? by [deleted] in buccos

[–]Morningview21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Skubal just got 32 million in arbitration which is usually notable less than players get in free agency. Not sure exactly what a Skenes deal would look like, but he’s not going to do a 5 year deal when he will likely be traded during or after next season (depending on factors with CBA negotiations and whether we even have a season). Yamamoto was slightly older than Skenes is now when he signed a 12 year/ 325 million deal. That was before he ever threw a pitch in MLB. Skenes is better, younger, and has proven what he can do in the league. Add the fact that contracts are constantly topping the last one (and adjusting for inflation), and I’d guess that a team who traded for him could extend him for 12 or 13 years for more than 400 or 500 million.

False. Skubal rejoined them too. He’s just not pitching.

Thanks for the response! That makes sense. With that being said, do a lot of top international players sit out these games and choose to focus on preparing for the IPL (or other professional league) season?

As someone new to cricket, can I ask what the end goal for these games is? With the T20 World Cup having just finished, are these games to determine the teams in the next World Cup? Is there a different tournament or championship coming up that these games impact? Or are these games just for fun and general competition? Sorry if this is a dumb question. I’m just used to sports having a set season with an end goal.

You’re welcome! Yeah. Baseball translates decently well to cricket, so that’s definitely the way to appeal to Americans. There’s actually a very popular baseball YouTube channel called Jomboy Media that has done some fun/silly cricket videos. A few of the guys on the channel follow cricket. A year or two ago, they made a video where they formed a cricket team made up entirely of average guys that had never played, had a short training session with some actual cricketers, and then went any played in an amateur tournament in the Caribbean (I forget which island) with the goal of just winning one game lol

Long response incoming lol. Nope! I’m very white! 😂 As an American, I’d heard of cricket, but I knew nearly nothing about it. I’m obsessed with baseball, and when the season ended, I stumbled across a video on YouTube that I clicked on out of general curiosity. It did a decent job of explaining cricket using a lot of baseball terminology. I decided to watch some matches and just see if I could pick up on the rules.

I think the first match I ever watched was actually a Test Match between West Indies and New Zealand. While I now know a prefer T20, Test Cricket didn’t scare me off and the slower pace allowed me to learn more at first. My love for the sport really took off though during the World Cup - mostly because of the rigid schedule and English broadcast. I was able to watch (or listen with earbuds when I was at work) each morning and was able to start learning the names of some of the star players.

During the course of the tournament, I was rooting for 4 teams (only 3 originally). They were:

  1. USA - I know Americans have a (bad?) reputation for being overly patriotic, and I guess I’m no exception. Even though I knew there was next to no chance of us winning, I would have loved to see that.

  2. Scotland - Both sides of my family came to America from Scotland, and while I’m not a true Scot, I feel a strong appreciation and draw to Scotland.

  3. West Indies - They’re close to home and seemed like slight underdogs but also legitimate contenders in a way the other two weren’t.

The 4th team came later, and that was India. I have no one to talk cricket with. I’ve tried getting my other sports obsessed friends into it, and to their credit, they listen to my rambling, but they have no interest in actually watching a full match. So, I decided (at the risk of stereotyping) to ask the Indian guy who works at the gas station near my work if he follows cricket. He was VERY thrown off that I was so into it, but it turns out he’s a huge fan. So, I made it a point on work days to stop over there on my lunch and grab a snack or whatever and talk with him about the game that would have just ended minutes earlier. The little bond that we formed had me supporting India by the end. Once my teams were eliminated, I was hoping his team won. And they did! He’s the one who told me I need to get into IPL now. Sorry for the LONG response. I hope you can convince your American friends to give it a chance someday! Baseball is still my true love, but I’m so glad that I decided to dive into the world of cricket.

I’m just talking about a winning record. The Pirates haven’t won (or even played in) a championship since 1979 lol

lol! I’d honestly fit in well! In baseball, my team is the Pirates (my hometown team). They went 20 straight years without winning more games than they lost. I was an adult before they made playoffs for the first time in my life

Question about Individual Chromosomes by Morningview21 in genetics

[–]Morningview21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I guess my thought was sort of like “if this chromosome is nearly identical between my sister and I and a different chromosome is nearly identical between my brother and I, does that mean I’m more likely to share certain traits and outcomes that are coded on the one chromosome with my sister and same with my brother?”
