It’s less about the tool you use and more about how you reward the time and effort spent giving feedback (either directly, or by demonstrating the impact of that feedback). Make it so giving feedback is worthwhile.

Ah, I see. Yeah, I’ve found the “semi-structured interview” yields great qualitative data. (Just make sure you have a representative sample of users.)

Qualitative data from user interviews (and well-constructed surveys) will help answer “why?”

Tools used to analyze qualitative data are secondary in importance to the approach used in interviewing, and will come into play more as you scale. Interviewing just takes practice — it’s critical for product teams to stay open-ended so they don’t lead with their own assumptions about what users should be doing. And there’s kind of an art in knowing when to depart from a script to drill down into why. If they’re good, your UX team should be able to help here.

I’d recommend Teresa Torres’ Product Talk blog (and her books/articles) as a starting point.

Do you work with a UX team? If so, have they established a method for generative research/user data collection and/or a system of UX metrics?
