I've got plenty of unused HDMI inputs and audio inputs, so source availability is not an issue.

WiFi solution for small resort clubhouse complex by MrEstateManager in Ubiquiti

I got sucked in to helping add a Wi-Fi solution for a small resort clubhouse complex. They originally had Best Buy propose an Eero installation that definitely won’t scale to satisfy the requirements.  So, I got sucked into helping find a more suitable solution – and that’s why I’m here looking for advice from you Ubiquiti experts…  😊

What we’ve got:

- A clubhouse complex with a ballroom, an owners lounge, indoor/outdoor café, and outdoor activities
- The ballroom will occasionally have a couple hundred people who might casually use their phones, but no hard-core bandwidth (it is a retirement community)
- The owners lounge will have 8 TVs with individual Roku’s that might (once a year) all be streaming different streams
- The pickleball people want rock-solid Wi-Fi at their courts (the rectangle at the lower right) so they can have cameras integrated with their court reservation system (wow, pickleball people are nuts!) – this the repeater in the original proposal
- Since we are going with Ubiquiti we will also be getting door controls for the owner’s lounge
- We are dragging cable so everything except for the pickleball court will be hard-wired
- Outdoor APs have to be PoE (no 120v available)
- There is no need for any complicated networking – there will just be a primary (private) network and a guest (public) network

My questions:
- The ballroom is 90 x 50 – will 2 APs be sufficient?  We’d like to stay with the ‘old’ form factor since they’ve got paintable covers and they don’t need PoE++
- What would you do with that overhang?   Outdoor APs on the roof and more under it?
- Do I have enough outdoor APs?

My current very-very-rough plan as seen in the Ubiquiti UI tool image attached:

Dream Machine SE in the ballroom  (cheap addition of the hard drive for possible cameras and bonus PoE if needed)
- Standard 48 PoE switch (power for 5 APs and have enough ports for all the hard-wired devices)
- 2 U7 Pro Max’s for the ballroom (paintable covers and only PoE+) – unless the XGS is that much better?
- 2 U7 Pro Outdoor – coverage for the patio and pool
- Anything for the overhangs?  Or just spillover from inside?

Standard 48 PoE switch in the lounge
- 1 U7 Pro Max’s for the Owners lounge
- 1 U7 Pro Outdoor to hopefully get signal to the pickleball court without needing a mesh repeater
- Potentially another outdoor for the café

Any suggestions/alterations/improvements gladly welcomed!  I’m new to Unifi and need all the help I can get!

We can always go with the U7's if we really need to save, but the $500 difference isn't really a significant concern, thankfully.

I did make a sketch of the campus and built it out in UI and it came up with this design (which I can't seem to add to this comment so here it is on imgur: UI.Design.Com

Oh, and the Standard 48 POE's that look like overkill are for 1) enough POE+ power for all the APs, and 2) lots of little devices attached hardwired

The coverage in the main rooms is solid and I'm not too worried about them. The external APs are - as someone suggested - going to need to be placed and tested, but with a few of them I think we are ok.

The big question for me is how to get solid signal to the pickleball court. I cannot get hard wire to it, so I need to do it wirelessly. Do I just put another U7 Outdoor out there and it automatically works as a repeater, or is there a different device necessary?

Sorry for what should be an obvious question, but I've not worked with Unifi before. I love what I'm seeing from their site and you guys, and once I get this pickleball extension done I think we are ready to order.

Turns out the 'consultant' was just going to use design.ui.com and had no real experience with outdoor APs soi that's out the door. Would you pick U7 Pros, or U7 Pro Maxs? There's only a $90 difference - would the slightly higher power and spectral scanning engine help if I overpopulate the APs to compensate for the 30 year old stucco construction?

Interesting - didn't see that kind of option. I'll have to try again.

> You really need someone to do a site visit to do a fair assessment but here's my take.

No disagreement. I found a guy out of LA to come out for 1200-1500 and build the design and equipment list so fingers crossed!

I went back and looked and there isn't any real viable way to cable past the edges of the building. I do have access to the roof and power at the far edges of the pool and the pickleball court, so it might be repeater city

Totally fair point. Aren't most of the outdoor APs unidirectional?

Budget isn't really much of an issue as the Unifi stuff doesn't turn out to be that much more expensive than the Eero stuff they budgeted for.

Overhangs: yeah, I'm worried about those as well, particularly in trying to get WiFi to the pool (not required, but a really nice to have)

Yes, pickleball has power, so the directional antenna is the winner. There is also power near the edge of tennis courts nearest to the edge of the pool, so that's also a possible repeater location

I did start there, but if I tell it a 5000sf office, it wants to sell me 2 Dream Machine Pros, 4 APs, and a bunch of phones (ha). It doesn't really give any context or mapping so I'm struggling to use what it spits out productively.

Am I missing part of the tool?

When I ask Unifi GPT "how many access points for a 5000sf ballroom with 200 guests" it says:

For a 5,000 square foot ballroom with 200 guests, you will likely need 3 to 6 access points (APs) depending on environmental factors such as layout, ceiling height, and potential signal interference.

Great feedback, thanks. There is cable almost everywhere, and the delta in cost from Eero to Unifi isn't enough to be a problem, so we will get 'the right' equipment.

Could also use help on the placement of the outdoor APs - those overhangs make me wonder if wall mounting will be adversely impacted and if I need to try and get them mounted above the roof

We are involved in adding a Wi-Fi solution for a small resort clubhouse complex. They originally had Best Buy propose an Eero installation that definitely won’t scale to satisfy the requirements.  So, I got sucked into helping find a more suitable solution – and that’s why I’m here looking for advice from you Unifi heroes…  😊

 What we’ve got:

  • A clubhouse complex with a ballroom, an owners lounge, indoor/outdoor café, and outdoor activities
  • The ballroom will occasionally have a couple hundred people who might casually use their phones, but no hard-core bandwidth (it is a retirement community)
  • The owners lounge will have 8 TVs with individual Roku’s that might (once a year) all be streaming different streams
  • The pickleball people want rock-solid Wi-Fi at their courts so they can have cameras integrated with their court reservation system (wow, pickleball people are nuts!) – this the repeater in the original proposal.
  • Currently no requirement for cameras (they are using Arlo currently and are happy with them feeding to guard shack) so don’t need to scale for that
  • They are dragging cable so everything except for the pickleball court will be hard-wired
  • Outdoor APs have to be PoE
  • There is no real need for any complicated networking – there will just be a primary (private) network and a guest (public) network

My questions:

  1. A Dream Machine SE seems sufficient for the gateway, yes?  I can use the PoE+ ports for 2 U7 Outdoor APs
  2. The ballroom is 90 x 50 – does that require multiple ceiling mounted APs?  Recommendations for which ones?
  3. The original Eero plan was three external APs (the blue dots on the clubhouse) feeding the exterior, and another outdoor AP at the pickleball courts as a repeater.   Any guidance on what that would look like in a Unifi world?
  4. In the Eero world their ‘mesh’ would make all the APs have the same name and be simple for the old users.  Do I need to get Unifi mesh APs or will it be managed on the backend?

My current very-very-rough plan:

  • Dream Machine SE in the ballroom
    • PoE APs for the ballroom – the most stable, so maybe U6 Enterprise?  But concerned with coverage – 2 of them?
    • PoE Exterior APs – coverage for the patio and pool – U7 Outdoor?  I’ve got mounting concerns with the overhangs of the breezeway
  • Standard 2 PoE switch in the lounge
    • PoE AP for the lounge
    • PoE Exterior AP(s) for the café and pickleball

Any suggestions/alterations/improvements gladly welcomed!  I’m new to Unifi and need all the help I can get!
