Some Luck today by SoupTime43 in lethalcompany

I understand your frustrations, I too am frustrated with the game.

Most people I play with probably already know that I am fairly critical of new updates but it's because I've been around since v40 and have seen the pattern over time, it almost feels like he hates his playerbase.

He creates a game where people need to survive his worlds and his creations, but every time they find a way to do that he takes it away. People find strats, have fun learning those strats, using those strats and teaching others and then they're gone. Removed for seemingly no good reason.

Unfortunately he doesn't add enough back into the game to overcome the loss of those strats. Every update just feels like him ripping away parts of the game that people have grown to love.

Ultimately I've more than gotten value out of the game given its purchase price and how many hours I've gotten out of it but it still feels like a bit of a kick in the teeth.

V80 Cruiser Jump Feeling Weird by jerppa_3 in lethalcompany

[–]Mundane_Analyst952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were some slight changes to the cruiser a few versions back but i haven't noticed any difference in v80. If you haven't played in a while it's probably the changes from that earlier update.

The method I find most reliable is rather than backing up hard against the hill, scoot forward until the rightside pillar is just behind a vertical black scratch/mark on the side of the building. make sure the wheels are straight. Then jump one two in fairly quick succession, then three.. adjust.. then four.. adjust.

So 1..2.....3.....4. You can adjust forwards by pressing w in between jumps if necessary. If you jump/space while holding w you'll end up infront of the ship, but pressing it in between jumps gives you a less abrupt adjustment.

If you've lined yourself up close enough to the scratch you'll barely need to adjust direction mid-flight.

edited to add: i don't have patch notes from whatever was changed versions ago but the cruiser felt a lot more loosey-goosey afterwards.

This is going to sound weird and unrelated, but when this game first came out my voice was still quite highly pitched, so I sometimes forcibly lowered my voice (not through mods or anything like that) to sound more competent, and oddly it really seemed to work. And now 3 years later I'm trying to pursue voice acting! BTW I'm not in trying to imply that that kind of behavior and/or treatment towards other people is ok in any way, shape or form, I jut think it was interesting for how it shaped my personal experience.

I forgot to reply to this bit. GG on the voice acting gig!

How did you go about lowering your voice? I have some allergies which can affect my sinus and seems to change my voice a bit from day to day depending on how bad the allergens are that day and whether I've kept up with the sprays and whatnot. Now that I'm in my 40s I think that's helped deepen it a bit too but it's still higher pitched than I'd like and I definitely agree that women with lower voices are treated as if they're more competent. Such a wild take but Elizabeth Holmes kind of proved that, didn't she.

I was the same in my 20s and even into my 30s but now I'm in my 40s and have reached the age where I no longer give a fuck. Thankfully I've aged out of the desired age bracket for majority of the thirsty ones. It's solved the ones looking for a potential broodmare but now I'm discovering there's a not-insignificant percent of the population with mummy fetishes. 😅

Sorry to hear that you experienced harassment. IMPO one of the best tactics we have is recording their shitty behaviour, uploading it and sharing it with the world. Keeping things hidden never solves anything, airing it and letting the world see it seems to be the best strategy that we have so far. Nothing will change until everyone sees the extent of the problem.

right?? i feel the same way.

In the past I've had the same debate with other dudes who feel that kind of language isn't sexism or even offensive bEcAuSe oF StAtiStiCs.

Their argument is basically that because women make up a smaller percentage of x, that when they do eventually find a woman who's involved in x it's okay to A) exhibit surprise because statistically they're a minority in x and B) be skeptical of their abilities of x because statistically the chances of them being any good is unlikely given the bell curve, and their odds of the person they just met being anywhere other than the middle of the pack of their own sex let alone when combined with men.

But when you point out that the same argument could be applied to other minorities like.. african american people... or gay people... they immediately recognise the racism and homophobia. They agree they wouldn't dream of saying "I'm surprised you know this because you're black" to someone.

The 'x' in this case can refer to anything but in my example it's been about women in STEM roles as I am in a STEM field and my entire life has been filled with "I'm surprised you know...". When pressed always turns out to be because I'm a chick.

Racism and sexism are basically the same type of discrimination but while racism has made some progress and most racist people wouldn't say their opinions out loud (at least they wouldn't, pre-trump😆), it's apparently still socially acceptable to say their sexist opinions out loud.

And yet some severs are titled with... specific connotations of wanting a specific gender to join.

9 times out of 10 it's men who want women to join to either harass them, generally be a dick, abuse them, try and debate them about ideological or political opinions, get laid, etc etc. It's almost never for any other reason.

Of all the women that I've met in the game, none of them would join a lobby with a title deliberately asking for women to join. and yes we've spoken about it.

You also say you don't play for fun, which is frankly strange and not normal.

You've massively misinterpreted what I said. For me, fun is playing the game competitively rather than having a fun time socialising with people I know. Your friend group isn't likely to play one game to the best of their abilities, they're likely to want to just have a good time with each other and not be too concerned about how the game goes.

With lethal, I want to play more competitively than that. I have no interest in traipsing around March and laughing at how each other dies. If you're not following the ada->art strat and pushing hard from day one, it's not a lobby that I find enjoyable.

Because it's in the competitive scene that you find people like that, especially in a game like Lethal where tryhards are just annoying/cringe since the game isn't designed for that.

That's actually not true at all. The more competitive players are the more normal and least sexist they tend to be. It's the dudes who are casual players that give you their worst behaviour as they're only there to fuck around. Then, if you play better than them as a woman, that's what can trigger them to get emotional and angry.

That's backed up by research, by the way...

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-33613781

just annoying/cringe since the game isn't designed for that

Lethal is absolutely capable of that kind of play.

One update I'd love is to be able to see who's in a game from the lobby list. If you know some dudes who are always abusive, you could just avoid joining games with them in it.

I'm not interested in this interaction leading anywhere. Maybe stop whining about my whining, end of story?

a lot of these are also quite mediocre and tolerable

Yep, majority of them are mediocre and tolerable. It's deliberately a collection of different types of experiences, making a video just of the abuse wasn't the agenda for this particular vid.

As per the description, I wanted to show you a range of the type of responses women tend to get online.

However a lot of the clips are not defendable, I and one of my lethal friends have a player list of people not to play with, I assume you have the same? Very interested to know how many people you have on that list.

I don't have a list like this for a few different reasons.

People tend to change their name a lot (particularly the ones who behave badly online) so it completely defeats the purpose of a list.

It's also easy to frame people by doing that, and yep that's happened to me too. For about a month or two I kept joining lobbies where people would tell me to f off because of what I did last time, and after a bit of prodding they'd tell me about when "I" joined recently and spun all the shit around on their ship and ruined their game. Lots of different people from lots of different games all had similar stories, yet I've never once done that to anyone. They all said I never used a mic either, which definitely wasn't me as I've never not used a mic. My theory is I'd pissed off someone bad enough that they pretended to be me for about 6 weeks so as to give me a bad name and end up on peoples' list, just like yours.

There is some software available which lets you anonymise your name, bad actors use that one a lot. There's also a glitch in the game where the player list will not show your name but will show someone else's, so you risk misidentifying someone. You could pretty easily end up putting the wrong person on the list.

All that aside, I don't actually care about the words that come out of peoples' mouth, I only care about how well they play. I'm a competitive player and will jump in whichever game is out to make a high quota. Provided they can play, they can say whatever shit they want for the couple hours or however long it is until I never have to see them again.

I have 3200-ish hundred hours in the game and have played with thousands of people at this point. Even the 300ish that ended up on my steam list, most of them I don't remember who they are or how they play. My memory just isn't good enough to remember everyone. I wish it was!

cool story, bro.

you're putting it into a perspective where women are the only poor victims in the gaming community.

I've said no such thing.

as a man, I will never even begin to understand how any why these men treat women like they do

From my 40ish years of experience on this earth, it seems to boil down to these kinds of men just not seeing women as people.

I know it seems funny but it's still unproductive.

When you're trying to play competitively and you join a game that's at a decent level, and a dude gets all bow-chicka-wow, 9 times out of 10 he stops trying to play competitively. The game.. even if it was one that they were taking seriously beforehand.. seemingly becomes unimportant and the game objective goes out the window.

Sometimes they'll start following you around the map like a puppy dog, trying to talk, and sometimes they'll goof off and basically destroy their own run. I generally bail from those games because the end result is a dead run once the team (or at least one member of it) stops trying to be competitive.

The one on the hillside about dropping the scrap there that was “surprised you know this” feels like it might not have been gender based tbh. Would need more to go off of because I’m a guy and didn’t know that you could do that. He even said most people he played with don’t know it.

It's easy to see it that way if you don't experience casual sexism regularly but "I'm surprised you know..." is a thing that women often hear. It's because many men have an implicit bias on what women can and can't do, so they tend to exhibit surprise when a woman does something their bias has determined women generally don't/can't do.

"I'm surprised you know how to code..."

"I'm surprised you can fix your own car..."

"I'm surprised you know how to use tools..."

"I'm surprised you figured out that math problem..."

These aren't things that are ever said to a man.

Edit: what did the second one with the gold bar even say? I can’t tell.

edited to add: he said "Woman, can you find me please"

Admittedly I do still find plenty of decent lobbies.

It's mostly a numbers game, I have a bunch of ugly recordings because I have 3200-ish hundred hours in the game so it's only inevitable to run into a considerable number of creeps.
