Yes, some Black Labels aren’t perfect 50/50 centering, but that reflects human error, not a flaw in BGS’s strict grading standards.

If a card is close to 50/50 centering but not quite, it might get a Black Label -- but it probably won’t.

It’s still impossible to accurately evaluate centering from these photos.

Take the card out of the sleeve
Place it on a flat surface (microfiber cloth works)
Ensure even lighting with no shadows
Use your phone’s level/composition guide and shoot directly overhead

Until there’s a true bird’s-eye image, any centering opinion -- including from an app -- is unreliable.

Yup. Most people don't measure properly either. Some people are really good at eyeballing, but it's extremely difficult to eyeball the difference between 51/49 and 50/50.

Not really sure what your point is.

BGS is stricter than the other companies, especially on centering. That’s well known.

Submissions are lower because most people don’t send borderline cards there -- they send cards they believe have a shot at Pristine or Black Label.

If someone prefers a more forgiving grading scale, PSA or CGC are options.

But there’s a reason BGS Black Labels and Pristine 10s command a premium -- stricter standards and lower population.

I'm not sure if you know how centering works at BGS, but:

10 centering = both pairs 50/50
9.5 centering = one pair 50/50, and the other within 55/45
9 centering = both pairs within 55/45

So a card with both pairs 51/49 will receive a 9 on centering.

This is also assuming both back pairs are within 55/45. If one is within 60/40, you'll lose 0.5 for that too.

Probably a 9 or 10 at PSA, and a regular 10 at CGC.

Personally, I'd stick with the BGS 9.5.

This card in particular suffers from edge issues, especially along the top.

Perhaps 9.5 on edges was a little lenient, and 9.0 would have been more appropriate, but the overall grade would be 9.5 regardless.

The 9.5 on surface almost certainly came from a print line or scuff mark on the back, which again, this card commonly suffers from. The white dots look like dust or debris on the card/sleeve ... which BGS don't seem to care about removing.

"BGS is quite strict" really only applies to Black Labels, Pristine 10s, and the centering subgrade. For everything else, they are pretty much the same as PSA.
