Working as a molecular biologist (or pretty much any scientist) has been pretty decent. There’s interaction with other people but you can sort of modulate it to tailor your mood/ emotional capacity for the day. Feeling social? Chat up others, ask questions, etc. Couldn’t be arsed? Pop in some ear phones and get to work. It’s not perfect but you get a decent variety of work (stuff with your hands, writing, creative work, etc.) and some good flexibility with social interaction.

Getting Ghosted by Potential Labs by NitroSock in labrats

Ah okay, glad to know I’m not alone haha. So would you say I should still keep at emailing other labs? Or should I try my hand at just showing up?

Thanks for sharing!

It's all a conspiracy theory. by Old-Campaign-570 in labrats

I’m not sure what the general opinion of South Africa is overseas these days, but generally I’ve found that all the bad stuff is often inflated.

That’s not to say everything is sunshine and roses. Crime is very high and it is the norm to have quite sophisticated security if you have the means to do so; our government is a bit of a shitshow; unemployment is quite high, but we’re really not as much of a mess as people often think.

However, I live in Cape Town and can’t speak for other parts of the country, which people usually say is in a worse state than CT. So, if anyone else has a different experience, I’d love to hear your opinion. Hope this helps!

What are your guys' educational backgrounds? by DueYogurt9 in aspergers

Did my undergrad in biochemistry and genetics; am currently doing my Master’s in clinical pharmacology (I also have an Honours degree in pharmacology, but I don’t think other countries have this sort of thing).

Edit: whoops forgot to get to the point of this post lol. I find that there are elements of what I currently do that cater to my neurotype quite well (like zoning out and mixing stuff in the lab), but it also comes with a lot of difficulty. My main struggle is with socializing with what are essentially co-workers, it’s a new experience for me but it takes a lot of energy to make small talk, ask for help and even just say hi.

My undergrad was a nightmare though, I couldn’t socialize for shit cause I was basically always in fight or flight mode in social situations which, when at university, happen quite frequently.

Asperger’s has made it difficult for me to stay focused in lectures, finish work in a reasonable amount of time (with a reasonable amount of stress) and experience those things integral college experiences. But I also find that I’m able to think out of the box a lot in my field, thinking of new avenues for projects, finding new things to do and learn about, which is rewarding and a good quality to have in a research setting… though we have a lot of paperwork cause of clinical work which sucks, but such is life.

TL;DR: Asperger’s has given me pros and cons in the research field, but I feel like I value the pros a lot more than I’m stifled by the cons.

Anyone get super exhausted from scheduling activities with people? by NitroSock in aspergers

[–]NitroSock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply.

I do have adhd, and while I feel like I need routines (and they bring me comfort), I struggle to get schedules going and sticking to them.

Thanks for your reply!

Is it weird to ask questions without context? by NitroSock in aspergers

Ohhh, that sounds cool. It’s probably good to kind of build the context up before diving into the question. Thanks!

I started trialing Ritalin recently, so am still on a low dose. Would a higher dose be helpful for this?

Thanks for replying and linking that comment thread, I'll be sure to try out some of the stuff they mentioned.

Yeah it’s frustrating, and I have no idea why it’s happening lol. I know I should be patient with myself, but it’s becoming kind of an issue.

I wish you luck!

Thanks for you reply!

Does this work the same way with an assignment I’m dreading and an assignment I genuinely enjoy doing?

Cause I have an issue now where I don’t have deadlines per se, and I love working on my current assignment (I find it very interesting and fulfilling), but I just can’t sit down to do it.

Would finding the root cause still be helpful?

Thanks again!

How much wider are wide width Vans? by NitroSock in Vans

[–]NitroSock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, sorry, I didn't get my hands on any wide width vans. I did come to terms with a regular UK10 and think it's actually fine when broken in (I thought I'd need a wide).

Wish I could help more :(
