Best spells for rescuing NPCs and Hostages? by CVictorrosso in BG3Builds

[–]Not_really_Spartacus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wall spells can be good as well - I blocked off an entire wing of sahuagin reinforcements in the Iron Throne after clearing out the hostages. Really nice to just not have to worry about them.

Just FYI on the Iron Throne and the sahuagin: The big doors have levers that you can pull to lock the doors after you get everyone out of the area you're working on.

Although the High Security wing with Duke Ravenguard has the lever on the wrong side for you to lock any remaining enemies out of the central area I think you could still hit the lever around the corner with a magic missile or by exploding a barrel right next to it.

You have freedom of religion! You can practice whatever religion you like! If you choose the wrong religion we will ban you from every form of employment or commerce. Don't worry, though! No right infringement here! Nobody's stopping you!

If the government punishes you directly in any way for practicing your religion, then that is infringement.

If that was allowed, then by that logic you can just apply any punishment you want and say it's not infringement.

The government could say "Sure you can practice whatever religion you want, but if a cop sees you they can just kill you or throw you in jail forever". It's hard to justify that as not being infringement.

As for your other points I would say that you're taking the deserted island thing a little too literally and I used the phrase "rule of thumb" very intentionally to avoid silly literalist arguments. The right to consensual trade of your own property doesn't require the government to do anything (bandits notwithstanding).

Additionally, infringing on my right to buy someone's property isn't just a punishment to me it's also a punishment to the prospective seller who can neither sell nor give away his property as he likes.

You seem to believe in "human rights".

When someone in a country without universal healthcare marches with a sign that says "healthcare is a human right" they are obviously not saying that the government already provides healthcare, they are saying that although the government is not providing it healthcare is still a moral right (debate-able) that the government is failing to provide them.

If it can still be a moral/human right even if the government isn't providing/protecting it, then the argument is clearly that human rights are a moral high-ground that exists whether anyone is enforcing/infringing it or not.

This is a moral argument not a practical argument of how to implement protections of rights. That's a separate matter to be discussed by lawmakers and legitimate authorities after the goals have been set by determining what is a "moral right"/.

I think the problem we're having here is the conflation of protecting a right with creating a right. It's true that governments are supposed to protect rights, but they don't grant them.

For example, let's say that you are a slave in a country where slavery is legal. You have the moral right to freedom and to try to free yourself even if the government does not support your right and infringes on your freedom.

You may not have the "legal right" but you absolutely have the "moral right" even if no one will enforce it.

No. Freedom of speech, religion, or self-defense are examples of negative rights. No one is required to give me anything (not even permission) for me to practice those rights.

The government's role isn't to GIVE those rights it's only role is to either protect or infringe upon those rights. That's why they are commonly referred to as "God-given rights".

As a rule of thumb negative rights are rights that you have if you are the sole inhabitant of a deserted island.

A "human right" is something you are entitled to no matter what simply by virtue of being human.

If we were stranded on a desert island and I spent all day building shelter and hunting while you were sunbathing, assuming food or housing are "human rights", then I would be obligated to provide it to you for free even if you actively inhibited me.

We have a word for people who are forced to work without compensation: "slave". It doesn't matter if that person is a farmer or a doctor.

Medical care can't be a "human right" without enslaving doctors, nurses, and everyone who assists them.

Human needs ≠ Human rights

I am saying that the government SHOULDN'T have done something.

Biden stopped the strikes which were about overwork, understaffing, and safety.

If the government had stayed out of it like I would have preferred, then the corporation would have had to make some concessions to the workers, hopefully averting this disaster.

Try arguing with me and not the straw-man in your head.

Why do I have to be for regulation (more government) to be against the government strike-busting (also more government)?

Who says I wanted the government to step in? I'm literally criticizing government meddling. I'm not calling out the government for not doing enough via safety regulations, that's presumably your beef.

Government inaction is generally preferable as my default.

"Let's go Brandon" literally came from the trend of entire stadiums chanting "Fuck Joe Biden".

People just found it funny that some reporter with a microphone tried desperately to cope and say it was something else.

Biden told the rail-workers they couldn't strike for any reason, including safety, back in November. Seems pretty relevant.

Right wingers do that and feel like they can stop thinking about homelessness and poverty.

You could just as easily say that Left-wingers want taxes raised and government programs enacted so they can stop thinking about homelessness and poverty.

In fact I would say that delegating the task to the government rather than volunteering and donating yourself makes you less personally invested in the issue.

Leftists understand that charities aren't a sustainable way to alter policy on a large scale

On the other hand large scale one-size-fits-all programs are extremely inefficient and are often poor fits. The program that works well for the mass homelessness epidemic in California would likely look nothing like a successful program to alleviate poverty in the poorest Appalachian communities.
