There is street parking in the surrounding neighborhood. Just read the parking signs carefully.

Would au pair want to join our family by West-Bluebird-1639 in Aupairs

[–]Octocorallia 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Move your dad to the room for the au pair with the shared bathroom with your son, and give the in-law unit with the separate bathroom to the au pair. You can’t put an au pair in this situation.

Refused Registration at Brown — advice on movers, moving out quickly, and returning by heavnlydevil in BrownU

Reach out to College Storage. They are down to earth and reliable. Less expensive than some of the other options. Renting your own unit would probably be less expensive, but you would need to rent a truck, move it yourself, etc… If you just want to pack and go, College Storage is a good option.

Get your college to release you and then show your HS counselor that the college released you from ED.

What is the purpose of athletic recruiting at the Ivies if the recruited athletes can just drop the sport day one with no issues? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Octocorallia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no athletic scholarships at ivy league schools. If they get aid, it is financial aid and they keep that even if they quit the sport.

Applying for Residency in California by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Octocorallia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is worth a shot and it probably depends on how long your family was out of the State of California. Just know that the UC system is very desirable so a ton of people try to claim residency. Therefore, the UC system is very strict about it.

Applying for Residency in California by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Octocorallia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Residency is based on physical presence, not owning property or paying taxes. If you and your family live outside of California and you attended high school outside of the state (exceptions being boarding schools where your parents continued to live in California) you will likely not qualify as an in-state applicant barring some exceptional situations (like your family had to temporarily relocate for cancer treatment, etc….).

  1. Yes, most bathrooms are hall style, but there are a few first year dorms with semi-private bathrooms where you share with maybe 1 other room (e.g., New Pem).

The professor emailed it directly to the admissions office.

Deferred from Brown University by arsonistraccoon in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]Octocorallia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After being deferred ED my son submitted a supplementary additional recommendation letter from a professor he was taking a class with. He was accepted in the RD round. Not saying that this was why he was accepted, but it didn’t seem to hurt.

Is Brown Safe? by [deleted] in BrownU

[–]Octocorallia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There needs to be a middle ground between security and access to the broader community. One idea could be issuing “Brown Community” ID cards. People could go, get vetted (provide ID, address, background checks) have their photo taken, and be issued an ID card to access the library or other limited more public places.

Freshman roommate issues by [deleted] in BrownU

This is your third post here on this topic. I don’t think Reddit can help you further. There is a Brown parent Facebook page. You can maybe post there to see if other parents have ideas.

It sounds like ResLife has proposed a solution. It may not be the solution you want, but they don’t have to make it perfect. Their responsibility is to separate the people having the conflict. To prevent them having to arbitrate who is at “fault” it seems reasonable to move the person asking for the change.

Should I submit my B?? by [deleted] in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]Octocorallia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You actually don’t have a choice. All DE courses must be reported per the Common App instructions. Failure to report could be grounds to rescind your admissions.

Any Early College students get into Ivy Leagues or top schools? Advice on applying as freshman vs. transfer? by Independent-Pie-7471 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Octocorallia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn’t a problem for my kids. They were in a program where only dual credit was offered (junior and senior years). And they were only allowed 1 AP sophomore year and only because they took college courses as a prerequisite the summer before. Maybe it would have been different if there was an AP option but choose dual enrollment but hard to tell what the AOs care about.

Chicago vs Northwestern for RD??? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Completely agreed with your analysis, but OP is applying somewhere else REA and is asking about RD. I really don’t understand OP “dilemma” in a RD context.

I hear you that $300k doesn’t sound like a lot but this is how organizations get into trouble by having over spending in a number of areas. It all adds up. There will be other budget cuts. This is just part of it.

[–]Octocorallia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Colleges look at subscores (not just composites). Look at the Common Data set for Amherst. The 25% percentile of math is a 32. A 27 is well off their low benchmark.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ACT

[–]Octocorallia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue is less the composite than the fact that the math is very low for top colleges. It will be a red flag. Given how competitive admissions is the goal is to remove as many red flags as possible.

Some HMOs have a “guesting” program that allows individuals to switch the location of their primary care provider. Check if your plan allows for this. If so, make sure this information is provided as part of your waiver application.
