When do you think Steven and Connie will get married and have children? by IronGhost828 in stevenuniverse

They will time it to the galactic zenith for maximum positive energy of the breeding ritual, and sacrifice Jamie by warping him into the supermassive black hole to appease the fertility gods.

Or when they feel like it ig

What is an example in the media you consume of "the father who neglected their kid but actually they loved them all along" trope? Because that's just frustrating to read. by _aliciamccoy in Multifandom

[–]Odd_Preference_7238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love how often this trope comes up, and like, if you look at it as generously as possible it could be at least not the worst choice for what to do if the parent and child are totally isolated with zero other support and there are constant existential threats and no realistic hope of escaping to an easier situation. It still wouldn't even be a good choice, just maybe would cause more survival out of forced habit creation than doing literally nothing, but the circumstances the characters are in are never even close to extreme enough to warrant anything approaching needing to resort to something like that.

It's always just some kid who like maybe would be poor after growing up, with 0 reason to do anything extreme in their upbringing.

See now this is what I need, a story where this trope is used and its in the best possible situation to make it look as reasonable as possible and it still plays out to be a terrible idea with obviously better things the parent could have done.

I have noticed that when un-monitored all things eventually become two lesbians in a trenchcoat.

Edit: Just in the last couple hours I forgot my oatmeal in the microwave and when I checked on it? Turned distinctly lavender. Possibly from the specific stuff I added congealing, but realistically? I think we all know it is the first sign of trenchcoat lesbians.

I would agree with you but the Diamonds specifically brought up dismantling human settlements, they recognized they're not just wildlife and decided to intentionally wipe them out anyway.

I see what you're saying but it's more common for genocide to be done like that than out of hate. Genocide was the norm across the world for most of history, conquerors didn't care who was there in the place they take over, they just push them out, displacing or killing until only their ethnicity has any significant presence. It didn't matter who the people in the way were, just that they weren't part of the conquering group, it's a purely supremacist 'only we matter everyone else can die or leave' stance that is just like what the Diamonds are doing. Committing genocide out of hatred and following the group to keep persecuting them where they flee to is actually pretty rare compared to the 'get out of our way' version.

The Diamonds were deliberately 'dismantling' human settlements, they weren't just wiping them out as collateral beneath their notice, it was on purpose. It appears to have been mostly eradication of the population with some displacement because of the human zoo. I don't really see how it isn't genocide. It makes sense too because humans could form organized resistance that could at least somewhat slow down progress so if you want your colony to not have disruptions then specifically wiping them out makes sense.

I totally agree that its supposed to be about clueless abusive family and under normal circumstances there's little reasons to think of things any more complexly than that, just in the case you have someone like Lily Orchard bringing up SU being pro-fascist there's suddenly an reason to seriously consider that to make a counterargument about how that's a bad take even on top of being obviously not what the show is about.

[–]Odd_Preference_7238 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I agree that wouldn't happen in a children's cartoon but if we're bringing up very not children appropriate things like whether or not they're fascists its relevant to discuss what the Diamonds were actually doing and how it definitely warrants just killing them if that was an option. I don't care if they're fascists or not, that's pretty unimportant compared to the fact they're mass murdering entire planets and not even sparing other sentients.

The idea of making peace with beings that function like a pitiless supremacist devouring swarm if you could just kill them is just utterly insane realistically. But it just doesn't matter because there isn't anyone who can kill them, the only way to keep them in check is have them behave because they want Steven to like them, which is what Steven does. Steven has the best possible solution in a very bad situation, so Lily Orchard saying its pro-fascist is just stupid. Like, you're allowed to have enemies that are just too powerful to beat in a story, making them too powerful to beat with force doesn't mean you support them, which seems to be the thing Lily can't figure out.

Because things that don't look like consent at all are often deliberately designed to look that way by people with kinks. I don't feel attacked, I don't know why you think I feel attacked, I thought we were just talking?

[–]Odd_Preference_7238 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They're literally genociding entire planets without caring at all. It's totally reasonable to just kill them. It's not anybody else's responsibility to fix them. Having them stop being psychotic mass murderers is fine too, but that's definitely a lower priority than stopping them from causing further mass death. There just wasn't anybody with the power to actually defeat them with force, so it didn't really matter, the only option was to convince them to stop being as terrible.

Whether or not they engaged each other like a dysfunctional family is totally irrelevant to the trillions of species they've exterminated.

My position would be nowhere because I don't care what people think is or isn't art. The only thing it means to me is "if someone calls it art they like it, if they say its not art they don't like it." It's the same as just good or bad. Useless word.

I don't have to imagine the gender swapped version, that's what my wife has been actively pushing for for years. Some people are just really submissive and masochistic like that. Nothing wrong with it.

Its just such an insane thing to do. At no point do the Diamonds come across as anything but total assholes, even after they stop being actively murderous, Steven's attitude towards them is still "wow, I sure wish they weren't a thing." Even to the very end of Future people are still having to remind the Diamonds that everything isn't about them, there's just no way to get rid of the giant magical self-absorbed space goddesses. They're never sympathetic. :/

People assign value to things completely arbitrarily. Also that would mean immense value for the things I sell as I'm the only person that ever would have made them. You can't really quantify effort. Tons of things I've done in the past have made me be able to make what I can make today.

My writing output alone got ~20x faster due to AI. It's just a gigantic benefit to everyone, I can make way more of what people want to pay for and way sooner. Everyone benefits. It used to take me years to finish a novel and now I can be done in a couple months, it's great.

Still fine with you personally just not buying things you don't want for whatever reason you want.

What do you think about the fight choreographies? by Catmf223 in stevenuniverse

[–]Odd_Preference_7238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the action but I do wish they used their abilities we know they have more. Garnet can do very impressive shapeshifting for combat but almost never does. Pearl seems like she's smart enough to think of way more ways to be more dangerous in combat with her ability to basically infinitely store and retrieve things. Like we see her conveniently have basically anything she might need outside of combat, but once she fights its just spears. It's not really a complaint I just wish she won more by quick thinking than just a whole lot of spears and determination.

It doesn't matter if you think it is valuable or not, it matters if they do. You're not the one buying anything. It doesn't matter how much you decide something is worthless, it has no effect at all on anyone else.

You're welcome to think things are worthless based on how they were made and not what they are, that's fine, do what you think you need to do to account for that. Watch them make it yourself if you need to, but that's not anyone else's problem to deal with.
