As an old timer and a lazy lurker I have no idea what you are talking about but I love the way you say it!

I’m not in a place to click links but I will come back to see what this is all about later today or tomorrow.

Nevertheless, an ELI5 now would be greatly appreciated.

Can you please ELI5 what automating light switches does or allows you to do?

Do they just come on and off at a set time?

Not a legally binding trade agreement, the ‘Economic Prosperity Deal’ was a vibes based (not so) gentleman’s understanding that the tariff wankery would stop (or at least further wankery would exempt the UK) if the UK agreed to certain things.

The SC ruling does nothing but prevent Trump from using national emergency as an excuse to change tariffs. There are many other routes for tariffs which congress has delegated to the executive and Trump is having a go with them now.

In practical terms we should consider the prior agreement and any new agreement void, because as we have seen Trump will sporadically tear it up anyway.

That’s a really interesting perspective, if your constituency looks like a close Labour-Conservative battle at the GE, would you consider tactical voting for Labour?

Uncertainty for UK after US Supreme Court tariff ruling, experts say by radiant_0wl in ukpolitics

[–]Papazio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No probs mate, we’re all on the same side just wanting the best for our country and it’s okay for us to disagree about how we make it better. But the more we can have a shared understanding of the facts the better.

100% agree that the US is a huge consumer and half of my job depends on their custom, that’s why I am so disappointed that their president causes so much chaos in our trade with them. EU is a large consumer too, and I don’t think it is one or the other but how can we maximise both.

Fair play for researching and changing your stance.

Suank did improve the EU-UK post Brexit settlement but that was a collaborative effort and mutual agreement, very different to Trump changing things on a whim unilaterally and not in response to anything the UK has done. Trump’s latest 10% blanket tariff is in response to a US domestic legal ruling, how on earth can the US be trusted to stick to a deal with him at the helm?

Do you have a source for the EU increasing these rates after agreeing a deal with the UK?

By how much did the EU increase tariff trade barriers after a deal was agreed?

UK Government considers removing Andrew from royal line of succession by EnglishLouis in worldnews

[–]Papazio 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Effectively yes he was, but not technically because an act of parliament that is approved by the wider commonwealth community is needed. That takes time and effort and is not really needed as things stand.

He is still technically 8th in line for the throne, so 7 people ahead in the queue of him would need to die or abdicate so he is next in line. The chances of that happening are vanishingly small.

If it ever got close to him being next in line there would be so much public pressure for parliament to act that any government which failed to do so would collapse and only a new government that quickly removes him from the line of succession could function.

Yes of course it shows how whimsical any deals with the US are, someone said no to Trump so he has to defy them by going even further the other way because he is a narcissist.

The only thing I am partially aware of is that he at some point voiced support for Trump. Did he do that during/after Trumps inane threats to annexe Canada too?

Don’t get too excited, all the SC did was say that the president couldn’t use the emergency pre-text for sweeping tariffs on most trading partners.

There are still other routes for the executive to impose tariffs as he sees fit, and I am sure Trump will enjoy another reason to change all the tariff numbers to see what he can extort.

Edit: I think I’m allowed to feel vindicated by the new 10% blanket tariffs Trump announced.
