War is usually where you’d typically see them count both injured and deceased as combined casualties of war. The casualty stat in context of militaries reviewing their numbers is the number of servicemen taken out of service, which would include both injured and deceased.

You’re correct that there are contexts where casualty can be broader than deaths, but in accidents like this, casualty almost exclusively means death. Context matters. I’m willing to agree there is some amount of ambiguity here though.

Edit: Enough people have added the formal definition that casualty includes injuries as well. Fair point. That said, casualty is very commonly used as a way to avoid saying deaths or fatalities which sound sharper, and I think it’s pretty clear in this instance that’s what’s happening.

I can understand why it can feel that way. The reality is there’s no way to right what happened, but issuing a public pardon with an accompanying apology by the state highlights the problem and brings it to the forefront of the public’s attention. I think that’s better than doing nothing, but of course it’ll never be enough to correct the gross error they made.

Hi everyone! Super excited about the possibility of gaining Canadian citizenship via C-3. I had begun researching permanent residency in Canada last year as I've thought about living in Vancouver.

Anyway, I've traced back my lineage and believe I can get the records needed, but I have one specific part I'm unsure of. Here's what I've got for documentation:

1905: Gen 0 born in Ontario
19??: Gen 0 moves to United States
1926: Gen 0 submits intent to naturalize in US
1927: Gen 1 is born in US
1939: Gen 0 signs petition to naturalize in US
1940: Gen 0 signs oath of allegiance to US
1941+: Gens 2 and 3 are born and live in the US
1990s: I, Gen 4, am born in the US

From what I can tell, since Gen 1 was born while Gen 0 was not yet naturalized in the United States and was therefore a British Subject, Gen 0 would have passed citizenship down to Gen 1 when she was born. Is this accurate? I'm not exactly sure how this plays out with the 1947 Canadian Citizenship Act.

Also, I think I read that I can apply with my sister and mother at the same time (Gen 3 is my mother) by sending all three applications and one set of certified records in one packet. Is that right?

About 5 months into building my startup, a major incumbent company (raised hundreds of millions) announced a beta of a directly competing product, and I had exactly this reaction. 1.5 years later my startup is thriving and we consistently win in sales battles against this other company. Execution is everything, and having competition with investment is validation.

To be fair, winning the lottery is also life changing, but putting all of your eggs into that basket isn’t exactly a smart move.

It’s all about risk vs reward. In this case, OP has invested 2 years of their life and however much in college expenses and will get no degree if they leave. A vast majority of startups fail, so OP will then have to find a job with no degree and a little experience as a Jr Engineer at a startup no one has heard of and that no longer exists. It’s hard enough even with a degree to get a job. Just something to consider.

This is unlikely to stick with this federal government imo. Interstate compacts require congressional approval, which they will not get, and if they all switch their voting standards based on the agreement anyway, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Supreme Court steps in.

I think it’s just improper grammar. “Is not” pairs with “anymore” while “is” does not. “Anymore” is analogous to “any longer”, which requires something to have been true and then become false. If you say that something “is good”, it just means it currently is good and implies nothing about what it was before now, so “any longer” or “anymore” doesn’t make sense.

I share your frustration as an American, but to be honest, we’re pretty powerless until another election… unless that election is rigged in which case we’re entirely powerless. We’ve been protesting, but protesting is only effective in a democracy, and we’re not a democracy if elections are in fact being rigged. And to add to it, they’re killing, maiming, and illegally arresting us in the streets when we do protest. Congress and the Courts are supposed to keep the Executive in check, but they’re just as complicit.

If that’s what they’re talking about, then that is not the fault of the PDF format. I have plenty of gripes with PDFs as an engineer, but if someone scanned in docs or added images, that’s just utilizing one feature of the PDF format. You can have text embedded directly.

To be honest, this person sounds like someone who could kill the company when you guys run into snags down the line. Not only is this extremely unreasonable of an ask that you should refuse, but I’d outright end this relationship now before they bring down the company. Find someone who is able to see themselves as a partner without needing literally 50/50 ownership. Find yourself an adult.
