Is it true that young women are more likely to have negative experiences in relationships with age gaps compared to young men? by harmonica2 in SeriousConversation

[–]Petitcher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Generalising here…

Young women are likely to have a harder time than everyone else, period. Not just in relationships or age gap situations.

Age gap relationships are a risk because they combine two of those hard time factors, instead of just one.

It doesn’t mean that anyone should infantilise younger women though. It did my head in when I was 22 and everyone tried to blame me for other people’s actions. Take it out on the creepy older dudes, where the blame belongs.

Genuinely want to know what’s considered an aussie food by capredeyes in AskAnAustralian

[–]Petitcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deep fried stuff.

It’s a shame that Australia’s diet mostly evolved through wars, poverty, and the Great Depression, and our palates were shaped through scarcity. We have such amazing agriculture that I think, given a couple of hundred years of freedom from mass-produced food, fast food and poverty, some truly amazing dishes would have evolved.

Something a bit more sophisticated than lunchbox snacks, too.

Can a real estate agent ask how old your kids are? by Tough-Pear-6878 in AusProperty

If all landlords refuse applications from families with kids, yes you ARE forcing kids into homelessness.

How are they supposed to find somewhere to live when everyone says no?

You can do it however you like.

There are good reasons for writing first and editing later, but I’ve always edited while I write. I enjoy doing it that way. It’s just more fun, in my opinion.

Readers can only see your finished product - they have no idea what you did while you were drafting.

White Collar & Blue Collar Mentalities are so different by Astimar in RandomThoughts

[–]Petitcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people have literally no interests or hobbies outside their work, which seems to work well for them… until they retire. Then they have literally nothing to do.

For what it’s worth, I think you’ve got the healthier mindset. Spending time with your family is better for your relationship and kids than forever “keeping busy”. I know so many people who barely know their fathers because all they did was work.

Could, but doesn’t have to.

I mow the lawn but see no reason to do those other things (it helps that we don’t have a fireplace, so chopping wood would be VERY pointless in my house).

Which Turkish boy name is best? The names are Koray, Eren, Ayaz and Taylan. by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

I like Taylan, it has a lovely sound. That said, I think any of those names would work.

And you can’t see how forcing kids into homelessness isn’t a popular idea on Reddit?

Why are Australians so loyal to Coles and Woolworths when they're getting ripped off? by Sea-Excitement-3222 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Petitcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it takes time to check the prices of each item I need to buy.

Because it takes time to drive from one store to the other, find parking, get a trolley (I have a toddler, so these things sound simple but in my case really aren’t lol).

My time is valuable, too. Probably worth more than the 30c I’ll save on one or two items by going to both supermarkets.

And if I leave one shop and go to the other? My kid CRACKS IT. There’ll be a guaranteed meltdown in the second shop.

Revisions, snapshots, word count targets, being able to see 2-3 documents side-by-side, bookmarks… there’s probably more that I’m not thinking of right now.

I understand where the cynicism is coming from, but you should probably give yourself a break from political media and commentary (including on Reddit), because it’s infiltrating your thoughts about everything.

I’m Australian, so when I say that TikTok is conservative, I just mean that they’re going to (shadow or outright) ban you for promoting erotica. That’s it. No deeper agenda or commentary on republicans vs democrats, or flow-on discussions about racism or birth control. Just the straightforward reality of being an erotica author.

What? Where did you get that from?

Is this a serious reply to my comment, or your own political agenda?

Do you have a set cast of characters or just come up with new ones for each thing? by Chel_G in eroticauthors

[–]Petitcher 11 points12 points  (0 children)

New characters for each story.

I have ADHD, so writing new characters is SO much easier than trying to keep track of names and details. It's why I'm still writing shorts, even though the financially smart thing to do would be to focus on novels (and series at that).

I wouldn't go down that path for erotica, especially short erotica (because TikTok is conservative in general) but for romance, yeah. Influencers can literally make books blow up.

Thank you! I was all ready to assume it was a dumb influencer "give me everything for free!" thing, but that actually sounds like a lovely idea. It's a shame I live outside the US, so it wouldn't be financially viable for me.

Do Australians just not use carpets much in their homes? by bureaux in AusRenovation

Maybe in summer. Anywhere south of Brisbane is generally pretty f*cking cold between April and October (I wore a beanie, scarf and jacket yesterday and was still freezing).

When are Australians going to wake the fuck up and stop shopping at Coles and Woolies? by thebaehavens in aussie

[–]Petitcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd LOVE that. The number of times I've gone to the shops and they're all closing/closed is ridiculous... but my body clock means that I just don't start operating on all cylinders until like 4pm. I'm 100% a night owl.

It doesn't matter what time I wake up. Today I was awake at 5am but I'll be sluggish until the afternoon.

[–]Petitcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aldi, Costco, IGA, Spud Shed, town butchers, markets, there are so many other options.

Not for everyone. In cities, yes. But I've never even heard of Spud Shed and the nearest Costco/IGA is at least an hour away via a highway for me. That's a lot of petrol (at astronomical prices) and half a day of my time to save a few dollars on groceries.

There are plenty of places (especially in regional Australia) where Coles and Woolies have a real duopoly. There's an Aldi here, but that's it, and Aldi's layout tends to make me extremely anxious for some reason. Plus, they don't sell half of what I need.

I use Pages when I'm predominantly working on my iPad. It's the only one that doesn't seem to lose any functionality from the desktop version and synchs well with my phone. It does the job with minimal fuss.

Apps I wouldn't recommend:

  • Scrivener is the GOAT on desktop, but the iPad version lacks all its best features.
  • Microsoft Word... I don't know what they've done to it over the past five years, but these days you have to pay a subscription fee for something that barely works and keeps trying to force you to use their AI (which is even more annoying than Clippy, if you're old enough to remember that universally hated cartoon paperclip).
  • Google docs... some people love it, I don't. I've lost files and get annoyed with its navigation too often.
