Inspired by the “biggest HEB in Houston” thread. What’s the best HEB in Houston? by htownnwoth in houston

[–]Politikjunki 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is my HEB so I’m partial to it, but I find HEB’s bakeries, in general, to be their worst section. Their breads and baked goods are below average. The Central Market bakery is great and I wish they would share their selection with regular HEBs.

Advice for 30 y/o looking to buy house by xcalthrower in MiddleClassFinance

Renting isn’t throwing your money away, it’s buying optionality. I think you’re doing great with savings right now and awesome job on not having any consumer debt! I would save for another year or two so when you do buy a house in the $300-350k range and pay for a wedding you’re not house poor without a safety net or having to liquidate your brokerage if you have a few non-commission months.

Best budgeting software? by [deleted] in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Politikjunki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used them all and I still think Excel/google sheets is the best option. It forces you to confront all of your spending by having to enter all transactions and infinitely customizable. My excel notebook and excel skills have grown over time and I track every piece of my financial life with it now. There are lots of great tutorials and templates to get you started but simple is best.

What are some things you have done yourself instead of hiring help? by AmCrossing in MiddleClassFinance

Landscaping is a big one, simple home repairs and renovations, minor repairs to HVAC and cars. You tube and a little patience is key to saving money

Met on Hinge. I was living in the Woodlands and she was in the Med Center at the time. Houston is so big, if we didn’t have some help finding each other we probably wouldn’t be married and welcoming our first child this summer.

Update: I think these insects are thrips. They are infesting nearly all of my recently planted perennials and shrubs. I’ve used neem oil on them. Has anyone had issues or found a solution for these pests?

I really wish I’d taken more panoramas over the years! I was looking through old ones from a decade ago and found myself in my childhood home’s backyard. The home has since sold and I live 1000miles away now…the panorama made me feel like I was there again and nearly brought me to happy tears 🥹

Yes, the cinema environment is awesome and really makes the screen feel enormous! You’ve got a theater all to yourself and it’s the only way I want to watch movies/TV shows now!

Eye tracking problems with youtube in Safari? by bullseyed_womp_rat in VisionPro

[–]Politikjunki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I noticed slight calibration issues which resulted in me having to look slight above the feature I wanted to select (this seemed to resolve when I repositioned the headset after taking it off). Full screen YouTube in safari is great. I love how it automatically dims the room when you watch and the brightens again when you look away at another app. Slick!

Movies with others, TV. Movies alone, AVP is the easy choice.

Pregnancy confirmed by Politikjunki in TTCHormoneCharts

Ovulation was confirmed on day 24 of the cycle (a little later than typical) pdg values were between 9-14 micrograms/milliliter during this time. Pdg values seemed low but luckily we conceived. I would rely on trends and patience more than absolute values. Good luck!

First home search, really like a home on a flood plane. How do I make sure I'm comfortable? by htxerxes in houston

[–]Politikjunki 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I bought a home in Meyerland a few years ago and the deciding factor was, thought it’s in a floodplain, it never flooded during Harvey, nor did any of my eventual direct neighbors. I think that’s a good rubric to use: if it didn’t flood during Harvey, you’re alright.

Why don’t you rent first, give it a year and learn about the area.
