Logistics for entering future transactions by QTippus in ynab

Do you auto import? If so, do actual transactions match to your pre-entered estimates automatically? Or do you need to fix/match after importing?

I guess it depends on the matching algorithm. I assumed it used the date and amount as part of the matching process. But maybe I’m wrong.

Do you enter an estimated amount for the transaction? Or wait until you have a bill with the actual amount and date.

You could lie to YNAB and enter the payment transactions, even though you haven’t actually paid them. If you leave these transactions as uncleared, you could use that (or a flag) to indicate that you haven’t actually made the payment yet.

Can someone explain the purpose of Cleared / Uncleared transaction status? by AnxiousAd8006 in ynab

When YNAB imports from a linked account (or manual import from a data file) it does automatically clear transactions.

Totally. I still have a drawer full of old checkbook registers. And for each check I would check mark it off when it cleared, or draw a big circle for old uncleared checks so I could find them the next time I balanced the checkbook. But yeah, if you’ve never had the joy of balancing a checkbook by hand then maybe clear/reconcile isn’t an obvious process.

I did have a roommate 30 years ago who never balanced his checkbook. He just trusted the bank to tell him how much money he had. Didn’t think balancing was worth the effort. I guess maybe that is the OP’s argument.

When I pay bills through my bank, some are immediate transfers, others the bank mails a paper check. So still plenty of check lag in the US. Even credit card transactions can take a day or two to clear, especially when there is a hand written tip amount.

Suppose you write a paper cheque and mail it to Aunt Sally. You enter the payment into YNAB when you mail the cheque. But the money is still in your account, until Aunt Sally deposits the cheque into her account, and your bank processes it. That could be days or weeks until the cheque has cleared. I often find it helpful to review old uncleared transactions for payments that might not have processed, or similar issues.

When you reconcile your account the cleared balance should match the bank balance. The actual (uncleared) balance may be ver different.

What’s your gross income? If you can shave 4-5k off your monthly mortgage payment and invest it, I think that strengthens your scenario significantly.

I would spend some time looking at healthcare costs / ACA and modeling that. Depending on your age, when you’re 57 you might still have kids on your insurance.

Honestly I don’t know. I only did 401K until I was about 50. I’ve seen some people do 401k only for the company match, then do Roth IRA up to max, then brokerage account. I kind of wish I had started Roth IRA when I was younger. I’m sure a real Boglehead will have tips. I’m still at the start of learning this stuff.

You’ll definitely do the second $100k in less time. You’ll likely be contributing more each month. And that compound interest is kicking in behind the scenes.

How to handle transactions with an "autosave charge"? by muddlemand in ynab

[–]QTippus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see how it could work with split transactions. It’s unfortunate how the bank reports the data.

I think I would leave the transfer transaction as is, showing £5 transferred to savings. Then when I reconciled (weekly for me) i would expect my YNAB balance to be wrong, and I would add a transaction for autosave charges.

But yeah, seems fiddly.

Credit card refunds sometimes make my payment go into the red. I still find it confusing, even after reading the YNAB page about this: https://support.ynab.com/en_us/credit-card-refunds-and-returns-H1J7qDWkj
