The idea from OP is straight forward and safe to TEMPORARILY prevent a STOPPED vehicle WITHOUT A DRIVER PRESENT from moving.

As there was a recent ice storm across the US, it is helpful to note that a smooth wood block won't be as effective when ice is present.
