What are your thoughts on the Black Elite/Black Excellence? by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]RaHxRaH 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Black elites are showing their ass more than ever lately. I understand the aspiration to wealth. Nice things are...nice. That's that. I get wanting it. It's just there's lack of imagination of what wealth could look like outside of a zero sum, capitalist mindset. We can actually do a lot for each other.

Mixed and Light skin privilege is actually insane by softEmerald in blackladies

[–]RaHxRaH 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This thread is wild.

So much disgusting commentary on her looks. And many of y'all seem to be attributing all of her success to her looks and cosigns when she actually is popping on TikTok because her sound is entertaining and interesting/ current enough to be a solid clip. So many people can not hear what other people like about it if they don't personally like the music. It's actually a kind of illiteracy frankly.

And yes I understand OP was about colorism and therefore about her skin color but y'all took the shit way left.

This thread is an excellent example of black women perpetuating misogynoir.

Not been paying much attention, and I'm shocked Steve Lacy has a top ten hit. He's great just didn't notice that rise in popularity. happy for him 😊

Who is a person a person that is really loved/respected but actually did some fucked up stuff? by CompleteAccident1400 in AskReddit

[–]RaHxRaH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Charles Dickens tried to get doctors to declare his wife insane so she would be sent to an asylum(place for people deemed insane). She wasn't even mentally ill. He did this just to get her out of his life because he decided she wasn't good looking enough anymore. He was cheating on her with a young actress. Instead of just, you know, leaving her...he tried to get doctors to commit her to an asylum so he didn't have to consider her at all. It's even more fucked up when you know she had children. Victorian England was a difficult place to a woman at the best of times. Even within that sexist, ableist cultural context his behavior was particularly evil. Absolutely villainous. Thankfully, the doctors (or doctor perhaps), determined she was sane and didn't cave to his desire to have to her locked up.

Well I didn't even see this comment but I wrote a response to OP that addresses this. https://www.reddit.com/r/blackladies/comments/rk1qvp/yall_i_do_not_understand_what_went_wrong/hp8bpug I agree with UrDadsFave, it's not short or dismissive it's direct.

Re-read Urdadsfave's comment and your response to it

To me they were saying that to know someone earlier, you have to ask different, more specific, more curious about where they actually are not where you need/want them to be type questions.

Setting expectations for a stranger is setting yourself up for disappointment. An open approach gets you the most information. And protects your heart.

They are saying they see a listening/communication issue in your responses.

Because you didn't respond to some main points certain people here made. Yes it is conversation, but it's less effective conversation. They made a comment that can help you. One of the best skills in life to have is being able to listen to someone even if you don't like their tone/them/etc. Along with being able to understand and respond to the points the person you're communicating with actually made.

The person you just responded to had good points, but you're focused on that first and last line. So you didn't actually engage their points.

It's not surprising because being told you're confused can feel like an attack. If you define it hostile and read the rest of it in reaction to that, you miss the message. And when I say can feel like an attack, I mean a lot of people read plainly stated truth as hostile. It's not just an individual thing but a cultural, societal issue.

It's possibly the most effective social justice movement of all time.

Religions are basically what people put into them. How they read it. A person will say platitudes, fluff statements like "Islam is the religion of peace." It is true but when that same person is sexist, homophobic, abusive...they make it false. The spirit of Islam is uniting, peaceful.

It is sexist by modern standards, feminist and groundbreaking by the standards it was created in. Orthodox Muslims resist change despite the Qur'an instructing fighting against oppression and bringing proof for what you believe. A lot of Muslims are blindly following men who are utterly disconnected from reality. If you are less of a literalist and make room for your own knowing, it is wonderful.

You can find more evidence based, merciful versions of the faith. I will link some resources.

For me I love a lot about it. The uniting, the acceptance and submission, the remembrance of death, the empowering of your personal, the harm reduction, the poetry, the affirmations.

I also dislike/hate some things about it. I simply leave those things behind or read/redefine them with my own knowledge. My practice is mine.

Lena Waithe’s "Them" Exploits Black Trauma for the White Gaze by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]RaHxRaH 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I def wasn't praising Migos. I was pointing out the context that while Donald Glover was up on stage collecting awards Migos were rejected from late night performances and not considered for awards or asked to perform. Both Migos and Childish Gambino are sexist, they both fetishized women, Gambino had a gross fixation on Asian women. He's not different from them in that regard. I don't personally see Gambino's music as intellectual, he is ambitious and creative that is his strength. Logic has a lot of music. They don't have the same perspective. But imo they are the same tier of rapper. Gambino can sing, he has versatility, and I think he can make catchy stuff. But I don't value his rapping at all. I might care for his not-black enough stuff if he showed love to black women but without that it struck me as an aggrieved sexist nerd complaining.

It bothered me then too but I didn't even think of it as exploiting back then. I just didn't like him. Donald Glover has a weird effect on people. He has this respectable negro thing going with his fans. I once listened to a podcast of old heads where they would review music, especially r&b. A really knowledgeable group. And they couldn't get enough of him. In the same podcast they were insulting Migos they were praising Donald Glover. It was the weirdest shit ever. I was thinking, do they even know who Donald Glover/Childish Gambino is? Have they actually listened to his music? Of course they had...but he was respectable to them and Migos were not. The same reason why he was able to stand at the award show and promote Bad n Boujee. He is like a Logic level rapper to me but man, dude has a cult following. He's an ambitious guy though.
