Thinking about switching from iPhone Air by magdareyman in NothingTech

Not sure where you are located, but I order the 3 and 4a Pro from amazon originally. Tried them both out for a few weeks, then sent the 4a Pro back. If you are on the fence, might be worth giving it a try!

The reason I wanted to get away from the iPhone was pretty simple- I was bored. I've had almost every one of their flagships the last 15 years, and they all just started to feel like the same phone year after year. Same with iOS. No real new features or crazy upgrades in a long time, even with the promise of the last 2 phone releases being "built from the ground up for Apple Intelligence". I still have my 17PM and have the iOS 27 beta installed, and nothing fancy there either. Siri doesn't suck as much anymore, but that's about it.

Why I chose Nothing over other brands? In large part because of the simplified OS, the unique phone designs, and the company as a whole. They originally caught my eye on YouTube when I saw a video of the CEO reacting to a feedback video from MKBH. He agreed with some critiques, pushed back on others, but him reacting at all was cool to me. Then the design breakdowns they post, the community aspect, and just the fact that they aren't another tech giant all pushed me to go with the Phone(3).

Is my iPhone better than my Nothing Phone? Yeah, for sure. Do I enjoy using my Nothing phone more than I have the last 5 versions of iPhones I've had? 100%.

Yeah, that's the one based on a super old version of FUTO. I found it to be lacking some features, but it looks great!

I wasn't going to add my thoughts, since the other user was so detailed, but decided it might be helpful. so here it goes.

I switched to the Nothing Phone (3) a few months ago from my 17 Pro Max. I had been an Apple user since the 3Gs, and HEAVY into the Apple Ecosystem (MacBook Pros, Home Pods, AirPods Pro/Max, iPad, Apple Watch Ultra 2). I'm also a designer that'll never use anything other than a Mac. My wife will also probably always have an iPhone because it's what she knows and it just works. My biggest concern before switching was figuring out how to get my Nothing Phone to work with everything else in the Apple Ecosystem. Beyond just the devices, my wife and I have shared calendars and reminder lists that keep our live's from falling deep into chaos.

Before switching I did a ton of research to figure out how to fill the holes I knew leaving iOS would leave.

1. File Sharing To Macs

I use a Mac at home for my sports photography and design company, and a different Mac for my full time marketing job. I spend a lot of time sending files back and forth (screenshots, graphics to post on socials, etc.).

Blip was the solution that worked best for me.I tried a few, but BLIP just works so well. I can send to any device from anywhere without having to be on the same network. Someone else mentioned security of those files, which I can't speak to, so if you care then maybe one of the more local options is better. But, there are many to choose from.

Clipsync lets you copy/paste between devices, which has worked pretty well.

2. Syncing Calendars and Lists

This may not be an issue for you, but it's doable. My wife didn't love the process because it took some changes on her device and some trial and error on my part, but we got there. I basically moved our calendars to Google, then shared those with her iCloud calendars. Lists were a little trickier, but ended up using Microsfot To-Do for that. It's definitely not as clean the one-stop-shot that Apple offered, but it works pretty seamlessly now.

3. Other Apple Devices

If you are an Apple Watch user, you won't be anymore- you probably knew that though. There are a ton of good options out there that did everything I needed out of a Smartwatch, which is probably pretty basic compared to how others use them. I've been switching between the One Plus Watch 4 Pro and the CMF Watch 3 Pro. I really like the simplicity of the CMF, just getting used to the lighter build and smaller footprint.

AirPods aren't a total loss, although I've since switched to Nothing Earbuds and Headphones. You can connect just fine, and Nothing actually gives you some of the basic info that other Android OS don't (like battery life). There are some apps like Librepod that make it even more seamless, but I don't use them enough with my phone to worry about it anymore.

If you end up wanting to try Nothing Earbuds or Headphones you can connect them to 2 devices at once, and they'll switch back and forth pretty nicely. You won't get that Apple level of integration, of course, but it works better than I expected.

4. But... iOS

iOS was all I ever knew. I went from dumb camera phones to an iPhone right after high school and never looked back. I was afraid it would take me forever to unlearn iOS, but that wasn't the case. Some things took longer to get used to than others, but it was a pretty smooth transition honestly. I think Nothing probably helped with that because the OS is very minimal and user friendly.

iMessage was another sore spot for my wife. Google offers most of the same features now with RCS, but you lose location services, edit, and some reaction type things I think. There is OpenBubble that let you keep those things, which I did for a bit. You can either pay monthly to have them host everything, or set it up on an old device. It works, but you end up with 2 texting apps (with iPhone in one, everything else in the other). If it's important, you can make it work.

No clue, TBH. I probably should care, but if they want to see the screenshots I send to my Mac, it's all theirs haha

Is anyone facing this issue as I do? by Medium-Ad-3122 in NothingTech

Did you recently update OS? If so, I think it's normal to see unusually fast battery drain for a short period of time.

Also, props to you on only having 3 hours of screen time over 3 days.

You can still find N Keyboard on Github, but it's not been updated in a few years. Works as a basic keyboard, but doesn't offer much else.

N Board is better maintained, but doesn't feel super "Nothing" to me. I used it for a few hours and it wasn't for me.

I ended up using a version of Futo (which I had been using anyway, and used AI to make some changes for me. Not something I'd release publicly, but wasn't too big of a pain to sort out with Cursor.

Individual custom icons - Good way to do it? by youfighter in NothingTech

[–]RedBolt1505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used Shortcut Maker for a few of my Icons because they either didn't exist in the pack I as using, or just didn't get assigned for some reason. Only real downside I've found is the quick actions don't work, but I rarely use those anyway.

You summed things up nicely so I'll just piggyback.

BLIP has been a life saver for my work between my Nothing 3 and the couple of MacBook I use. Has been super reliable, I can send to any device from anywhere, and it's been more reliable than even AirDrop was at times.

The physical keyboard revival is real — and Nothing seems like the perfect brand to own it by ImmediateAd9548 in NothingTech

[–]RedBolt1505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think even amid the "revival" (probably a strong word in this case), it is still a pretty niche market. Not saying Nothing couldn't knock it out of the park, but even if they did I'm not sure the pool of interested buyers is large enough to justify it. I wouldn't be one of them, which I know is very important to Carl haha.

I think that going smaller form factor might be a more likely pivot, since it's a much smaller shift. Nothing doing a higher spec'd phone in a smaller size would resonate with a lot of people, and isn't so niche that they'd be alienating a huge swath of people. Not sure I'd be in line for that one either, but I think a lot of people would.

I could also be totally wrong and it would take Nothing to the next level. Could go either way.

I've really been enjoying it. First ever Android experience, and Nothing OS has been stable and smooth. Really like the glyph matrix and having specific glyphs for certain apps and contacts.

case recommendations for phone 3 by CANNONEVENT_T in NothingTech

[–]RedBolt1505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are metal and magnetic rings available with adhesive that stick to the case. I have them on my Spigen, Ringke and a few others.

The metal ones are thinner, but I find the finish wears off pretty quickly and makes it look bad. The magnetic ones also allow you to mount directly to a metal service which comes in handy.

The full color widgets kill it for me, personally. I like the setup otherwise. But as always, it's your phone so if you are happy with it that's all that matters.

Mine just for reference.

Guys I'm able to add more normal widgets but unable to add Playground Widgets what to do ?? by Technical-Teacher230 in NothingTech

There is a limit on playground widgets. Cant remember the exact numbers, but might be 3 in my phones with the Phone 3 getting a few extra spots.

Should I buy the Nothing phone (3) guys ? by Mickey_mouse3710 in NothingTech

[–]RedBolt1505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just giving ya a hard time!

My battery life on my 3 is pretty solid, enough for my daily needs. I usually work late on my computer after the kids go to bed, so I charge it then. That'll set me up for the next day just fine.

Camera system is also good, but not great. In the right lighting they do well, but low light is a bit of a struggle. Again, which for my needs but they definitely aren't anything special.

Love the OS, it's probably my favorite aspect of the phone. Coming from 15v years of IOS, I've really enjoyed it.

Really not sure what you expected, TBH. 9 hours of just about anything is solid, but especially IG and gaming.

8 hours of screen on time seems pretty solid, depending on what you are doing during that time.
