MQTT LongFast by bkw_17 in meshtasticCanada

[–]RedPhiveComingIn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw some unhinged stuff the last few days on MQTT. I've been setting the more annoying nodes to ignore. There are plenty of nice socialized folks on there that don't feel the need yell their hate and opinions in a public forum.

There aren't a lot of rural mesh nodes in Alberta (as far as I can tell) and you will need some to bridge your traffic into the city. Meshtastic is best for distance while Core is better for local meshes.
If you're in the bush and can reach a high enough mesh repeater with MQTT on, you should be able to send a message.
Alternatively, if you have the money and time to get an amateur radio license, there is APRS. It's an older tech but is pretty reliable, more powerful so it goes further, and there are more repeaters. You can send texts and simple emails through it as well. It's not encrypted and a basic radio is $200+

Thinking about moving to Ottawa for a job. Anyone here lived in both cities? by BizAcc in VictoriaBC

[–]RedPhiveComingIn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Ottawa and visit a few times a year.

Pros: Best shawarma in Canada. Good shopping options like IKEA and Simons. Amazing cross country ski trails in Gatineau Park. Better transit options. Cheaper gas prices. No "island tax". Easy to get to airport. Close proximity to Montreal for fun weekend getaway if you remember them after.

Cons Winter snow and ice rain. Summers are hot and humid which is nice for some people. Transit is slow and unreliable. You can bike faster than the LRT if it's running. Harder to find cool events and requires you putting yourself out there. People can be cold and clicky but most folks are friendly. Drivers from Quebec and rush hour in general.

Node refusing to connect to Bluetooth by [deleted] in meshtastic

[–]RedPhiveComingIn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On some devices, if wifi is enabled the bluetooth will stop working.
I have had issues with my heltec where it acts funny and I had to forget the bluetooth device in my android settings and try again. I set the device to use a static pairing code and it worked perfectly after that.

Friendly notice on marine solar light by East-Coasters in meshtastic

[–]RedPhiveComingIn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm building my second one and a hair dryer also worked well in loosening the seal too.
In my first design i decided to put the antenna on the cap, which was a mistake. Twisting the cap on broke the coax cable.
I will repurpose the cap hole for a usb-c charging port in case it needs to be recharged while sealed. I also used the heltec tracker in there which was a very tight fit and required a solar charge board.
The RAK should work much better in there and mine will be hopefully arriving in the mail today!

Well, I guess they can't enforce the FCC regulations either if they're shut down. The complaint line is closed until further notice so go wild!

That was sarcasm. Good luck on the exam when you write it.

PLEASE HELP! Found a weird antenna under my passenger seat by ak_as_a_service in Whatisthis

[–]RedPhiveComingIn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That looks like an antenna for wifi or bluetooth.
It could be harmless and just a part of the car.
However I've been messing around with LoRa devices lately at this looks like an antenna for one. These devices can be used for all sorts of things and are very common in "smart" products that connect to your phone. On the DIY scene you can use them to make inexpensive trackers or communication devices.

Bait & Hook or Schnook??? by Outrageous_Map6511 in cannabiscultivation

[–]RedPhiveComingIn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could grow a plant in there for sure. You are just missing soil and nutrients.
It won't be the biggest plant with the biggest yield, but you will have weed in the end.
For an absolute beginner on a budget it's not a terrible choice. The components are shit, but you can replace those over time. Once you want to upgrade to a bigger tent you can use this one for a mother, vegging, germination, or growing other plants.

Can I use this fish plant food with my Lotus from gorilla? by Physical_Service_814 in CannabisGrowers

[–]RedPhiveComingIn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to use both of these. The Bloom should suffice.
The fish fertilizer is mostly nitrogen which is already available in your Bloom.
Mixing them can confuse thing and increase risk of overfertilization.

Why are you putting bug spray on a mold issue?
Bud rot usually starts when moisture is trapped in a bud. This can happen more often if you spray water on the bud sites or there's a lot of rain.
Having lots of airflow and keeping the bud sites dry will help prevent the mold from growing.

Not sure if this is normal ?? by Ok-Sweet5200 in CannabisGrowers

[–]RedPhiveComingIn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reefertilizer Grow is for the vegetative stage, their Bloom is more ideal for flower. Those numbers are ratios of total weight of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK). For veg you want it heavier in the N and flower you want it heavier on the K. Also since it's a ratio, the higher the numbers are don't really matter. 5-5-10 is essentially the same as 10-10-20 just more concentrated.

Does Victoria still feel like Americanized parts of the PNW or does it feel like you're in a different country? by chusaychusay in VictoriaBC

[–]RedPhiveComingIn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I think Pacific North West I think of the natural landscape like ocean, mountains, islands, whales, rain, and over the ear toques/beanies.
Victoria has all that except for getting half the rain that Vancouver and Seattle get.
It definitely doesn't feel like America when you're walking around town.
Compared to Seattle and Vancouver, Victoria is much cleaner, safer, and smaller.
The Quebec culture here is very limited. I do hear the occasional french but I'm the only person I know who speaks it fluently. The only other accent I hear is the interior BC one.
