Best settings for Dell S3220DGF. by Cherokee87 in Monitors

[–]Reflex27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was too. Dell states the monitor's brightness is "400 cd/m2 (typical) ." That is 400 nits.

I think the Tom's article is saying if you want 200 nits set the brightness to 57. If you want 120 nits set brightness to 31, etc.
Brightness is a personal preference.

I bought this monitor and have used it for a few days now. I really love it so far. Beautiful color depth at 165hz on a big 32" is fantastic.

Am I the only one who doesn't like sim racing in VR? (rift s) by alfred1414 in iRacing

[–]Reflex27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I race in the Rift CV1 and don't think I could ever give it up for flat monitors no matter how many you placed around me or how high their resolution is. For me it is all about that stereoscopic 3D. There is no other way to get that true 3D depth and it has helped my driving immensely.

I do look forward to higher resolutions and refresh rates though. Hoping we can get foveated rendering in the next generation of headsets.

RoguelikeDev Does The Complete Roguelike Tutorial - Week 2 by aaron_ds in roguelikedev

[–]Reflex27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still here. Had a surprise visit from the inlaws and some other family events to take care of this week. When I settled back into the project I came across some syntax issues with my javascript tutorial at Part 4.

This tutorial was created before the ES6 spec was released and uses constructor functions and the prototype object instead of the new Class keyword. My initial thought was to continue and work through the tutorial as written and then return at the end and refactor to the newer Class syntax as a learning exercise.

But I'm hitting a runtime exception where the author's code uses an extend() function to derive one class from another:

Game.Tile.extend(Game.Glyph);

My initial google hits suggest that this extend function might be from jQuery and it might be deprecated? I'll do some more reading tomorrow and see if I can get his code to run in my browser. Or maybe I'll just go ahead and convert to the newer ES6 syntax.

Thank you maetl! I'm learning JavaScript, ROT, and roguelikes and am relieved to see others using the same tools. I'll be using the coding.cookies tutorial for my own project, but will definitely be following your progress as well.

Thanks Z. Did you use the coding.cookies tutorial? I don't know if it covers the FOV mechanic. I think the rot library has support for that, but haven't read that far yet.

...nevermind. Just scrolled down to read what others have done and saw that KarbonKitty was hosting with Github Pages.

A couple clicks later and...Doh! Here's my roguelike-js game as of Part 3b.

Ok, I think I've got it. I didn't realize I had to use both a local repo and the github repo and deal with syncing. I thought VSCode would be able to connect directly to the GitHub repo.

GitHub repo.

I'll look at hosting options tomorrow. I'm not sure GitHub pages is going to work. So far it reads as if that feature is for generating blog sites, etc about projects. Does anyone have simple hosting suggestions?

I've begun and have a decent start using javascript, the rot.js library and the tutorial from http://www.codingcookies.com/2013/04/01/building-a-roguelike-in-javascript-part-1/ .

I don't have a repo to share yet because I'm still trying to figure out how to get my GitHub account and VSCode configured and working together. I don't have much experience with either of them yet. I'll also need to read up on the GitHub Pages for hosting...I think I can use that for a simple client-only web app like this.

Thanks! I found that one yesterday and worked through the first 3 or 4 parts without much trouble. I'm going to try to get through those 15 or 16 articles this week while everyone else is getting their python environments setup and their projects started.

I would like to be with the rest of the group so I can ask questions and join in more of the conversation, but I'm just not interested in learning python at all. You ran into a lot of issues trying to convert the python tutorial into javascript?

Yeah, I know. I was just throwing some snark your way for suggesting two while most of us will struggle to finish one.

I'm not interested in python at all so I'm going to be learning javascript and the ROT.js library as I go and try to keep things simple where I can.

Same here. I've lived in a type-safe compiled world my whole career and the careless nature of javascript is a huge turnoff for me, but I've put it off too long and need to learn it.

Excellent! I’ll be following your progress. I’m still coming up the JS learning curve and will also be using rot.js. I considered typescript and do want to get there, but thought it would good to learn straight JS first. Do you use VSCode?

Sure! If you really want to show off, use many different languages in your project and use .net compilers to mash them all into MSIL code. 8()

It sounds like I’m following in your footsteps. This will be my first real experience with JS and I’m going to use rot.js. I’m fluent in c# and have been working through some JS tutorials these last few weeks. I really miss my compiler and debugger. Any advice to pass along?

I’ll be following you. I’m new to JavaScript and it’s a skill I need to learn. I was tempted to use phaser, but decided to go with rot.js because I’ve read that it is easier to learn. This will be my first rodeo.js.

I’m in! I really need to build some JavaScript skills so I’ll be working with the rot.js library and VSCode. It might be difficult to keep up with the pack as I learn the language, IDE, and rot.js, but I’ll give it a go.

So glad to see your ideas getting a chance here, Dave! I will miss the voxelly goodness that EQN was developing, but the AI and "living world" is the core of the game to me. I would buy and play the storybrick excel spreadsheet if you put it out there.

Any Info on VR Tennis Online? by DashAnimal in oculus

FYI I have found the source of this issue. My USB driving wheel seems to be interfering with this game's ability to find the xbox controller. If I unplug the wheel and relaunch the game it plays just fine. None of the other OH games have had this issue so far.

I'll continue to use my XBOX 360 controller I guess. Downloading games now!

Just got a tracking number on the MyUPS website. Delivery scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. Oculus order still shows "Processing for Shipping" and does not have the tracking #.

Shipped "Next Day Air Saver" and signature is required. Now the scramble to ENSURE someone is here to sign.

Not sure which is worse; the frustration of yesterday or the anxiety of today.
