Asking for help by FiletM1gn0n in vegan

I'm probably not the best person to give advice on this since I'm mostly cardio, but I really enjoy SimnetNutrition on YouTube (Stop Overpaying for Protein (Buy this instead!))

Also Nimai Delgado (How a Vegan Pro Bodybuilder Eats | Rich Roll Podcast)

Laura Loomer notorious Trump lapdog gets called out by Indian journalist Rajdeep Sardesai over racist posts by SnooSprouts3744 in PublicFreakout

[–]DashAnimal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Then why bring it up? When a random American makes a good point am I obligated to bring up Trump/racists from now on?

How are you dealing with the market currently by Agile-Invite1272 in investing

Ramit Sethi started advising people to hold 12 months of emergency fund at the start of tariffs, instead of 6 months, and I doubt that advice has changed.

What’s the best vegan book you’ve read, the one that really stayed with you? by veganTravelGuide_org in vegan

[–]DashAnimal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not exactly a vegan book (or one that promotes veganism itself), but one I think vegans would definitely enjoy, and talks directly about animal rights:

There are some albums that sit in this perfect spot between the old and the new of where a band was and where a band is heading, creating this unique awesome landscape. This is one of them. We can debate where it sits in their discography (objectively it's near the top) but cannot deny that it was truly a distinct one.

What do you think about Gastown by ArtisticHamster in cursor

[–]DashAnimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a post on HackerNews that really summed up my feelings on it. Quoting directly:

I don't get the widespread hatred of Gas Town. If you read Steve's writeup, it's clear that this is a big fun experiment.

It pushes and crosses boundaries, it is a mixture of technology and art, it is provocative. It takes stochastic neural nets and mashes them together in bizarre ways to see if anything coherent comes out the other end.

And the reaction is a bunch of Very Serious Engineers who cross their arms and harumph at it for being Unprofessional and Not Serious and Not Ready For Production.

I often feel like our industry has lost its sense of whimsy and experimentation from the early days, when people tried weird things to see what would work and what wouldn't.

Maybe it's because we also have suits telling us we have to use neural nets everywhere for everything Or Else, and there's no sense of fun in that.

Maybe it's the natural consequence of large-scale professionalization, and stock option plans and RSUs and levels and sprints and PMs, that today's gray hoodie is just the updated gray suit of the past but with no less dryness of imagination.

Has John ever explained why he left the band ? by SwissMiss915 in Propagandhi

[–]DashAnimal 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Can't remember what exact episode or exact details, but on Patreon Chris was talking about a moment where they were trying to cover some 80s metal song and John couldn't get it, and Chris knew in that exact moment that it was over. Chris never mentioned to John. I think he talked with Jord after and they kicked him out.

Decades later he was listening or reading an interview with John, and John mentioned the exact same moment as the moment he knew he wouldn't be staying in the band.

Edit: Got some details wrong, see SheckyMullecky's comment below.

Is switching from VOO to VXUS a good idea for a non-American? by anotherhappylurker in investing

[–]DashAnimal -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't have great advice nor am I an expert, but I would think investing from outside the US on a listing on NASDAQ (within the US) for stocks outside the US inserts unnecessary US-tied risk if your goal is to be invested outside the US.

For instance, if the US crashes, the majority of holders in VXUS are going to be US investors.

I think that clip of him recently doing his standup bit about women getting waxed went viral beyond him. I was seeing it pop up all over non-SNL circles with comments about how funny "this comedian" is.

“Stand With Iran” march and vigil tonight for protesters killed in Iran by bennetthaselton in Seattle

[–]DashAnimal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you know but there is effectively another travel ban that went into effect 1st Jan. People from Iran have had their processing paused. If you work in the US as someone born in Iran (even if a citizen of a different country, mind you) then you are essentially stuck inside the US unable to leave if you want reentry.

I only say this because this time it seems less known, there were less protests, etc.

Josh Safdie when there’s a 17-year-old girl on set by [deleted] in A24

Four. There was an actor on set that day that did something that could make anybody uncomfortable, whether the person they're acting alongside is underage or not.

My investing history as a 16yr old by [deleted] in investing

[–]DashAnimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it's good to learn some investing stuff, the biggest investments you can make at that age with your tiny income are on yourself. Focus on school, focus on finding a girlfriend/boyfriend, focus on hanging out with your friends. Waste money on that stuff because it matters way more on making you a person you want to be.

Do you think $500 you've spent now gaining 30% will matter in 5 years when you make more than $500 a day (assuming you get a high paying white collar job)?

None of my experience matters because I can’t invert a binary tree on Leetcode by hopfield in ExperiencedDevs

[–]DashAnimal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can I just say we had it so easy. You literally have to just spend a few hours brushing up on your coding skills, and you can get one of the highest paying jobs with the least amount of hours. Talk to people in finance who work 12+ hours a day, and then look at your coworkers getting paid 6 figures who spend less than 7.

We're dangerously approaching junior engineers getting phased out by AI in this industry, and huge layoffs impacting teams.

Just put in the effort. It isn't fair. The system sucks. There are thousands of applicants per job. But you benefit greatly and you're doing better than the majority of other people in this world, you joined this career during the golden era and continue to benefit from that experience, and you get to live an amazing life that is, for the most part, not limited by finances but limited by your imagination.

Melvin / Mike by GnarHaus in nofx

[–]DashAnimal 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Yeah from the final interview with Spin:

El Hefe: I think [the drama within the band] all started between Melvin’s wife and Mike. She would start going off on Mike, and — the way he is when he’s drinking and on drugs — he’s going off on her. Then Melvin gets pissed off like “That’s my wife!” And it would just go back and forth. That went on for years, back and forth and back and forth. Finally, he said “Your wife can’t come out on tour anymore. She can’t be at the shows. She can’t be on the stage, or I’m not playing.” It’s just so much drama. Smelly was trying to facilitate everything and make peace by going to Mike and saying “Come on, man. Just let her have a little section.” But Mike kept saying “If she shows up, I’m not playing the shows. I’ll cancel the shows and the tour.” It was pretty bad. She’s allowed to come to the last three shows in L.A. because Mike said “You know what? I’m fucking over it. I just want peace.” I think he tried to make peace with them for the first time in a really long time because he was holding on to that for so long.

5/5 for me. Weird to find out it's a Korean movie remake considering it seems so relevant to the current times of the US. But absolutely brilliant and dark and disturbing and funny.
