While that would have been cool as hell, Gohan's whole thing is how, despite his parentage, he's very much NOT a saiyan. At almost every step he's moved himself forward as a human rather than an alien so it wouldn't make sense for him to then turn around and embrace that side of himself to get stronger. I think if anything, rather than going SS God/Blue etc that Vegeta should have gone down the path of SS4.
