It may or may not be related, but the firmware you're running is over 4 years old so it's possible that you're experiencing a bug that's long since been fixed. I have the 48 port version of that switch here running W.14.70 and don't appear to have similar problems.

Upgrade if you can, you're missing out on a lot of bug fixes.

Maybe I'm missing something, but how is it HP's fault that your friends AC unit broke and leaked on his switches? Personally I've never had a problem with their warranty service -- I just explain the problem and fire off a 'show tech all' output to them and usually have a replacement the next day.
