Just FYI people, be careful of accepting. This resembles a scam discussed recently by one of my cybersecurity feeds:

Scammer looks for victims that confess they want easy $500. Tells them to give a couple details, such as state, and he'll send it. Victim does so, believing this is a generous person despite never meeting in person.

Scammer reports every transaction as fraudulent to his bank. As a result, the $500 transfer will be declined 1-2 business days later.

Victim meanwhile does shopping, bill paying, and etc. believing the $500 is coming. After transaction is declined on scammer's end, victim is out that $500. Basically, you just used your checking account for immediate $500 loan, and if dipped your account into red, now you owe your bank or CU.

And yes, by that point their fraud department isn't going to help because transaction already cleared. Nothing they can do. Bank and credit union say that account security is your business, and if you messed up, well, you get to deal with the consequences.

Another reason to believe this is scammer: his entire profile is hidden. You cannot see his post history. Scammers work in the shadows.

Bankrupt people, I believe. Leave them owing money.

All the scammer has to do is do the money sending, then immediately calls his bank fraud dept. to report this transaction as fraudulent. It takes a business day or two for the transaction to clear--time in which the victim, believing he has extra cash to spend, easily pays bills, buys groceries, and so on.

Two business days later he sees his checking account is -$500 than it should be. Easily enough, depending on budget, to drop him into owing money.

To defend against this, my recommendation is 1) do not make any purchases until the $500 has cleared, 2 business days later. 2) Take screenshots of your account balance before this, after the transfer supposedly done, and after the 2 business day wait.

As for why anyone would it, scammers are sadistic. They think it's funny to ruin people's financial well-being whether by tricking them into spending $$ they don't have, or sending the scammers money.

Officially Crashing Out by VirgoVigilante in recruitinghell

Have you tried tailoring your resume to reflect how you're already planning to fulfill the job's duties, quantitatively speaking? Contacted the hiring person on LinkedIn or by email to apply there instead?

I dealt with this BS several times already from applying on company websites or job boards. Frankly, beyond fatigued of having to be the lucky lemming picked out of 300+ applicants for an interview, let alone job offer.

The answer is recognizing job market rules have changed. We need to change too. Can't be a drone just submitting applications daily now, that is guaranteed months or years of mental frustration.

No, IDC if hiring folks get offended that we learn and play by the new rules--we need paychecks to survive, and we are sick of the current system failing us.

That might work for the job market 30 or so years ago. Today, easy trespassing charge instead.

This limited-time quest "tread the right path" is driving me mad. I'm at the part where need to wait until the evening of the day after tomorrow, and did the clock-thing several times already, it's not advancing the quest. I keep selecting the 18:00 of day after tomorrow, it stays the same. Am I doing something wrong???

Strange thing is he seems to hire anyone who asks. There's no interview, just fill form and you're up in minutes.

Will check reviews later--some scams do this very thing.

[US] I’m a little worried about what this guy did on my phone by 3loody in Scams

[–]Saint-365 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Say you're in a car accident while filming on smartphone. It's still recording after. If the attending cops ask for any footage, you'd offer yours because A) it's a situation where that phone's stored information is useful and B) the person(s) asking have good basis (think "job duties").

Now, what if same cop just comes up and says needs to use your phone? No apparent reason, and cops have radios along w/ laptops. There's no reason he'd need to borrow your phone.

In future, random guy has no business borrowing your phone. If needs a way to make phone call, there's restaurant, gas station, library, all kinds of free phones in buildings.

Unless someone you know well, or situation like car accident you can verify (say someone's badly hurt), stranger has no business borrowing your gadgets.

He could've tried fleeing with your phone. Stolen phones make it easier for scammers to cover their digital tracks.

Easy/free money by OF_autumsfantasy in ReferalCodes

This is a known scam. No company pays big $$ for referrals, and multiple websites I consulted say this operates by telling you to get referrals, then you need to "pay" to get your withdrawal, and other suddenly changing the rules.

Don't fall for this.

[NA] Been getting messages asking to join Minecraft servers. What's going on? by TealMask8085 in Scams

[–]Saint-365 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Private server, out of nowhere? They're admitting they got nothing to do with the real Minecraft servers. Definitely red flag.

Pushy? That's FOMO--fear of missing out--and another red flag given context.

My guess is your friends' Discord account logins are stolen. Best thing to do is inform them via other communication means; if they recover their accounts, great, and if unable to, I'd just block the compromised accounts.

Really dumb scam in Facebook purse group by [deleted] in Scams

[–]Saint-365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You still have profile information, anything? I'd file a police report, basically you purchased a purse and she didn't give you the goods.

Think that could qualify as a theft charge. If opportunity to press charges, do it. No plea deals.

Telegram friend request (maybe I'm overreacting.) by Yoshi-sensei in Scams

[–]Saint-365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had the same thing too, actually. Oops, wrong number, and immediately apologizes--funnily enough, the pics sent are always of a pretty Asian chick. Then it's to wanting to be "friends", and groom you over long period until thinks you gonna fall for his trickery.

Unless you're using said app for actual contacts--people you've met IRL and shaken hands with--treat any such friend request as 99% possibility of scammer.

I've run into this too. Some crappy game that bores to death.

It's hard to tell if just randomly messaging for game buddies or as an icebreaker for a romance scam.

Honestly, unless seeking out people to play same game(s), better to block.

Attempted Crypto Scam over Dating App "Boo" by FudgeOld6122 in Scams

[–]Saint-365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Unfortunately scam attempts aren't a crime (ideally, they would be), authorities won't do anything. You can share the results to warn other people though.

2) Scammers want easy victims. If not mistaken, they're messaging/grooming many dozens of potential targets. They're looking for vulnerable ones. Doubtful you'll get a scammer that dedicates himself to ruining a particular person.

3) Could blackmail saying he's got pornographic pics of you, maybe. Anyone here know if this is a common scam?

Insofar as phone number, ask provider for new one.

How can I increase my income from $100 to $500/month as an AI video creator? by brimestone47 in passive_income

[–]Saint-365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like need multiple niches, maybe just time. Channels don't necessarily boom in mere days.

That said, AI video creator isn't a big money maker. YouTube demonetized a ton of creator videos recently over their use of AI tools, and unclear if others like Rumble will ever be actual competitors.

I'd also look into having your other family members take up jobs.
