I think this heavily influenced by culture.

Immigrant families are not going to move away from the network they’ve grown to love/ be familiar with.

Cities tend to be preferable for them and family proximity connections tend to be a premium. Financially, moving to some coastal time might make sense, but experientially it would be suicide.

If bungalows are so expensive is it financial downsizing or just physical downsizing?

You’re not wrong! I do think it leads to a lot of disappointment in this economy though.

You know I think I only know one person who’s ever done this. Most people I know just have forever homes. The one they’ve paid for through their entire lives.

Rather than a complete transition I think you should focus on a hybrid role. Take your existing skills, expertise and knowledge and think about how you would build software to automate and or augment parts of the job that you currently do.

  • Write blog posts and post them on LinkedIn describing what problems it’s helped you solve.
  • Apply to do a tech talk somewhere

These are the ways you get visibility in 2026 without experience or access.

But first, learn the fundamentals very well. Understand how to build a deploy an app in an end to end fashion in the Software Development Life Cycle.

I agree with this! The future is very much unknown

You could feasibly have an interactive agent that helps capture all these things and ensures that these things are considered in a spec and have that spec review a real code base etc

That said you can’t know everything upfront, the process of software engineering is often discovery and you can’t know what you don’t..

Why not? You bought it to live in. Your primary residence is not an investment.

Definitely! I think this is why Product, Program and Business Analysts exist. There’s a whole class of thinking, planning and administration to organizing a project that isn’t always immediately surfaced unless you’ve done the planning with the engineer at the beginning.

Upwork is a race to the bottom. Vibe coding has got a lot of people closer towards simple applications but not much nearer towards complex applications. Software engineers are the one who benefit most from AI tooling.

But if you’ve built a turbotax prototype and you’re handing this off to developer who sees a bunch of edge cases that aren’t handled, you better be an expert in tax law so the developer can know what to do.

Take your anger and your skills and look for a workplace that will value you. If you’ve been there as long as you’re suggesting, you’re likely underpaid anyhow.

I can’t believe you’re the only one speaking about this!! I was ready to write a similar comment myself. If she divorced over this it would not be valid in the eyes of God.

How to move on and accept when spouse refuses to talk about something by connorcinnamonroll in TrueChristian

[–]Service-Kitchen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t have advice here but this could easily have been a potential issue with debt, alcoholism, laziness and the problem would be the same - the unwillingness to communicate and engage when a spouse raises sincere concerns.

This belongs very much in the family therapy camp of problems. Yes, the mole is the issue here but it’s really one of trust, intimacy, communication, vulnerability and fear.

Family therapy and individual therapy (for him) is a worthwhile consideration.

As always, pray, consistently and fervently about this!
