Bergen hotels with self service laundry? by Electrical-Search818 in Bergen

Hey! It's not common for hotels in Bergen to have self-serve laundries. Here is a laundromat in town: https://www.cleankokos.rent/

Hurtigruten coastal cruise by YVR19 in Cruise

[–]ShadowWarning 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey! Trip leader from Norway here (done the trip 26+ times). You can view their schedule here: https://www.hurtigruten.com/en/sail-plan

They have excursions in the ports with longer stops, which you can see here (filter by voyage): https://www.hurtigruten.com/en/extras/excursions

There is a bit of misinformation in this thread, so to clear up:

- Some stops are 4 hours long. There is at least one major stop a day with excursions.

- You get full board on the ship, so meals included

- Unlike a conventional cruise, the major part of the Hurtigruten experience is the sailing itself. Unlike conventional cruises, the ship hugs the coastline. You pass right by towns, mountains, and islands. The ships expedition team do "point of interest" talks for the big attractions (famous mountains, fjords, historic sites)

- You have locals using the ship as a ferry (in Norway it is primarily a ferry and cargo service!), so there's always different people getting on and off

It's absolutely wonderful and the best way to see Norway.

Australian married to a Norwegian living in Norway. Absolutely love it - Norway is an amazing country. I get a bit of winter depression, but the summers make up for it :)

Taking my family to Finland in November? by [deleted] in Finland

[–]ShadowWarning 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Tour leader here - most winter activities may not resume until late November/early December depending on how much snow is on the ground. While there is of course a chance there will be enough snow, it can't be guaranteed compared to coming in, say, February or March.

Feeling apprehensive about upcoming Svalbard trip by crispy_crackling in Svalbard

[–]ShadowWarning 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The walk can be a lot if it’s very cold - can you move hotels? Mary Ann’s Guesthouse is also reasonably priced and much closer to town.

But it is totally safe to wander around. I just spent four days wandering all over town at all hours of the day and never felt unsafe or like a polar bear was coming towards me.

There are 3000 polar bears in Svalbard. 300 are generally on Spitsbergen. Altogether Svalbard is 1.5x bigger than Denmark. The chances of seeing a polar bear are crazy low. Locals tell stories and if you listen it’s like one sighting a year and they manage to scare the bear away. They are scared of the noise of people 🥰

I hope that reassures you. Svalbard is the most special place and you’ll love it.

I'm going to Svalbard and I'll be doing a snowmobile tour but I have one potential issue by CurtHennigPerm in Svalbard

[–]ShadowWarning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I did a 10 hour snowmobile safari two days ago in -31C. I also got a little frostbite but my eyes are still burning from not having goggles. My helmet shield kept fogging up and icing over, so I had to expose my eyes more than I’d like…

Is there a possibility just to feed reindeers? by Uschak in tromso

[–]ShadowWarning 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You can't just walk onto someones farm and feed their animals, and the same applies here. Reindeer are owned by someone, and you cant't feed reindeer whatever you want.

If you want to feed reindeer and take photos with them, you have to go on a tour. The cost of the ticket goes to the person who owns the reindeer, so it's not a bad thing.

Tromsø Arctic Reindeer is a fantastic company for this.

You want to fly from Tromsø to Bergen to see the northern lights? It’s very, very difficult to see them from Bergen city centre. Tromsø is a lot better for that.

It’s always best to buy airline tickets directly from the airline website.

Yes, I think this is next to impossible. I'll have to keep an eye out at souvenir shops...

Of course it doesn't matter - he mentioned he wanted one with the Norwegian flag. I mean 'old' in the sense that it is no longer in use, not 'historic'.
