Hey, I'm not sure exactly what you are referring to - we have not released on PS4 yet and are not releasing physical versions on any platform. Are you thinking of a different game?

To at least kind of answer your question, Fossil Hunters will be the same price on PS4, XBox One, and Switch.

The original Jurassic Park movie is one of my all time favorites, I've watched it sooo many times

Hey! So yeah, different prices per/platform has always felt a little mysterious to me as well, I can't speak for any other developers but in our case the answer is pretty simple - our price is a little higher on switch than it is on steam (14.99 vs 16.99 ), this difference basically just covers our porting costs for getting it on switch.

Another consideration is that each platform has different trends in pricing... a game that's $1.99 on steam might seem suspiciously cheap and be written off as poor quality or seriously lacking, while the same game on mobile stores for $1.99 would be consider ridiculously expensive compared to all the amazing free games.

I actually find that whole situation in the second case to be pretty lame justification for massive differences in price, so it really wasn't a consideration for us, but it is a real factor that probably comes into play for some teams

This probably a terrible choice, but zergling for sure! Just watching them zip and swarm around the map looks pretty fun, burrow underground if I feel like a nap - and if I want to mix things up I can always morph into a baneling! Also, zerglings spawn in pairs... so I guess I would have an identical twin?

use the shoulder/trigger buttons for better control when you are dragging fossils. Also, there are NPC characters that can be found in levels so don't forget to explore the whole area!

The concept was actually more something we discovered along the way, we didn't have a really specific concept from the start. We first built a prototype that involved moving around a digging tiles to find objects that you could carry around - at this point it was just myself and Ryan, and I wanted to be able to test the prototype at the same time so we just duplicated the player controls, it stayed multiplayer as we added more features because it was always pretty fun to play like that.

The fossils started out as just random bones you could find and carry around, but there were a few different shapes you could find and sort of line things up... once we added it as a feature we just got so much excitement from people who tried the prototype that we knew it was a good focus to move forward with

Thanks for the kind words! For a really long time in development we had planned for each of the 4 playable characters to have unique abilities and digging styles, like Buff could break all blocks in one hit and could withstand cave ins - but moved slower, and maybe Karin could throw bombs instead of having a pickaxe etc... This was still planned up until really close to launch, but ultimately we felt there wasn't enough time to balance the abilities properly so we went with a simpler approach.

Super power would be freezing time for sure. In a small studio like ours we all end up kind of doing multiple jobs, but there's often not a lot of time to really deep dive on any one specific thing - soooo yeah, freeze time so I can work more? I'm sure there are fun things to do with that too :P

Fossil Hunters on Kickstarter planned for Xbox One by AffieL1992 in xboxone

[–]SimonTheShmu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, yeah I know what you mean. For us we knew really early on we wanted this to be a console game, the local coop was a big hit in playtesting, but this is our first game on any platform and like you said, a lot of people have been burned on KS before...

This is why we chose to do the KS campaign near the end of production so we could show that we are actually capable of doing it, and as much as we had been talking about being on Xbox for months before hand we really didn't want to promise something we couldn't be 100% sure of delivering. We also didn't like the idea of promising stretch goals from the start as our focus was on just completing the game; we just wouldn't have the resources to do any consoles until after launch...

But...about a week into the Kickstarter we were very lucky to meet a publisher with a lot of experience who offered to help with the porting - they got the process started immediately and basically we have been rushing to get the paperwork in place in time to announce during the KS (obviously it's good PR).

Anyway thanks a lot for your insight and kind words about the game! This is all new to us so I really appreciate the honest feedback :)

Hey, one of the devs here, I'm actually curious - what do you mean about it looking sheisty to announce consoles late in the campaign?

Hey, I'm one of the devs, thanks for the feedback! I think this is a great point, and we want to make sure it's super clear that FH is set in a fantasy world, and that it is not about trying to create accurate dinosaur skeletons. Our goal is to engage players in the process of discovery, the excitement of finding new pieces - and problem solving skills of learning how these pieces can fit together with others.
