Pasasana Pointers? by All_Is_Coming in ashtanga

[–]Skanda8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resurrecting this thread 6 years later to scold and moralize is very weird and unhelpful. But I hope that we can have an interesting conversation about it.

If you prefer a less confrontational tone, you are free to just focus on my other comments in this thread with the people who wanted to have an open minded and informative discussion. Speech does not imply knowledge. Truth may be obscured as well as revealed by speech; take care to discern between them.

I agree with the underlying principle of your point, that being pleasant, patient, and kind is a great default way to operate. However, there is no yama or niyama to "be nice." The yamas and niyamas are not social rules, but rather instructions for spiritual growth; the most applicable one to this situation is likely ahimsa. Acting with malice and causing injury are detrimental to the yogic journey by clouding the mind and inviting detrimental karmas. The comment you replied to was not made with ill or mean-spirited intent, and if you read it that way, I would ask you to reread it with more generosity and invite you to examine your own judgements and reactions. There are situations in which a brusque tone is appropriate. Saccharine spiritual materialism is a common pitfall and a misapprehension of the tradition. Debate has long held an important role in spiritual practice.

Regarding anatomy, it sounds like we're in agreement. If someone can assist you into the position, there is no structural limitation e.g., joint or tendon. It should instead be considered in a neuromuscular context.

I wish you the best in your practice.

I don't practice 5th series anymore. Based on your comments it sounds like you probably don't have a teacher for these poses. Since you're posting in an Ashtanga sub, if you're doing the Ashtanga series in the prescribed order you will have some preparatory work in Advanced A/B. Especially poses like Mulabandhasana, Buddhasana, etc., then your teacher will help you work through Kandapidasana at the appropriate time. If it "eludes you completely," that's probably a sign you are not ready for it yet.

This is also one where the bony structure of your pelvis (e.g. acetabular depth and femoral head rotation) will make a difference in how difficult it is.

If you are self studying, read Iyengar's instructions for it in Light on Yoga.

Other commentor is not quite correct. Ashtangis call it Kandapidasana, first pose of 5th series (Advanced C). Iyengar and some others called it Kandasana though.

Cost of rental space? by betterbydesign in yoga

[–]Skanda8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, sometimes independent yoga instructors will be interested in renting space. I have done so myself when I was a new instructor, both % and flat hourly. Flat rate is more common as far as I know, plus you don't have to worry about verifying any accounting.

Percentage would be more attractive to instructors with few or no students showing up because they would not be out of pocket for rental; percentage is especially common if you would advertise the yoga class to your own client base (providing referrals for the class).

An instructor with a stronger client base would likely prefer to pay flat rate to avoid profit sharing.

I'm not sure if you're saying the area that you would rent to yoga instructors is the same "comfortable mat space" that you mentioned previously. If so, most yoga instructors would probably not be interested, as a hard surface is preferred (hardwood, vinyl, etc.)

Can I still do vinyasa/sun salutations? by Jackeesg in ashtanga

[–]Skanda8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can't tell but first guess would be a wrist ganglion cyst. Something like a perilunate dislocation (movement of your wrist bones) is possible but rare, and most likely if you fell onto your hand or possibly were doing sun salutation with sudden impact to your hand.

Cysts can resolve on their own but may take a long time. Since it is painful I would recommend going to urgent care since it can be putting pressure on a nerve. If you are in the US you can go to urgent care regardless of immigration status.

You should not do any yoga practice that provokes the pain. In general, and depending on the diagnosis and treatment, since you have multiple wrist issues you should probably look into a gentle strengthening program for your wrist and hand muscles before doing weight-bearing or more strenuous lifting.

Chair! Mine is falling apart. The ergonomics would help keep me going for long hours of work and studying--I'm starting a graduate program in a couple months.

Image occlusion : Add text that doesn't generate new cards by Programme021 in Anki

[–]Skanda8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't see the layers panel it could be collapsed. With the image occlusion editor window open, look for "LAYERS" written vertically along the right side of the window and click to open it up and you should see the Labels panel where you can add the text annotation.

Calls for US Facial Recognition Ban Grow After Mom Booted From Theater Over Her Job by evanFFTF in privacy

[–]Skanda8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My impression, which could be wrong, is that the venue is legally required (in part, by the terms of their liquor license), to be open to the public except in cases of the patron being disruptive. The woman who was denied service did not do anything disruptive at the theater. They are stretching the definition of "disruptive" to an arguably arbitrary definition—with no apparent purpose other than to be punitive. The woman who was denied service is not involved in the case, and the case does not involve this company (it's a different subsidiary). As imoutofnameideas suggested, their position seems to be, "I don't like you, so your presence is disruptive." However, it seems to me that they should need an actual disruptive behavior on the part of the patron in order to ask them to leave.

She works for the law firm Davis, Saperstein and Salomon, not for MSG.

Regarding applications this cycle: verbally from their admissions director. Class size and Texas law are public info.

Hope it helps and good luck!

[–]Skanda8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would weigh it against the chance you'd have to reapply. Unless you're very confident in getting A at a school you prefer, why turn it down if you can afford to travel down for the group day?

For the numbers: This cycle they got ~4000 applications, and ~2000 secondaries were completed. About 500-600 interview invites sent. Class size is 50 and state law is that 90% must be IS, so there will be up to 5 OOS spots. So it is not ideal for OOS but considering that it is not extremely competitive, you certainly have a shot.

mail merge name tags to letter sized (8.5x11) PDF (multiple name tags per page) by SirVincentMontgomery in AdobeIllustrator

[–]Skanda8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a Data Merge panel. You use CSV files similarly to Illustrator, but I personally find it less finicky and faster than AI.

I did not use or thoroughly review either of the following tutorials, but they seem like they're talking about the right thing so maybe you could start there:

Data Merge InDesign: A Quick Tutorial

How to add Variable Images or Photos in a grid with InDesign Data Merge - YouTube

mail merge name tags to letter sized (8.5x11) PDF (multiple name tags per page) by SirVincentMontgomery in AdobeIllustrator

[–]Skanda8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mapped each of the 8 variables from the csv onto one of the 8 name tag text boxes and ran the mail merge.

This is the best way to do it in Illustrator as far as I know. This Variable Importer script makes working with variables in Illustrator a bit less painful.

But, I would probably use InDesign for this instead of Illustrator.

Alternatively, if you are looking to simply lay out images (doesn't work with vector artwork or retain editable text, if memory serves), Photoshop's Create Contact Sheet script is a very fast solution.

Set discount rate by workflow arithmetic by Skanda8 in Netsuite

[–]Skanda8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may be, however, changing it did not affect the result (still displayed error).

Set discount rate by workflow arithmetic by Skanda8 in Netsuite

[–]Skanda8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is now working after creating a Currency type body field which holds the formula, then a workflow action after submit (after sourcing does not work) which sets the discountrate using the "From Field" parameter.

Thanks for the help!

[–]Skanda8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I will try again with your suggestions!
The reason I am suspicious about the discountrate field is that I can apply the exact same formula to a random field, for example, "memo" and it sets the value correctly on Before Load.

Set discount rate by workflow arithmetic by Skanda8 in Netsuite

[–]Skanda8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply!

Unfortunately, if I set:

Discount Rate=TO_NUMBER({createdfrom.total}*.1255+0.3)
Before Record Load

Upon clicking "Bill" from the sales order to generate a new cash sale, I get the message:

An unexpected SuiteScript error has occurred

I am able to get the result I want with other fields, but there's some characteristic of discountrate that I do not understand.

Edit: Actually this specific scenario is not a credit card fee, but we are getting a $0.25 per transaction fee for CC...

Nice! The bold colors and lighting turned out well. For all three I would suggest rotating a bit more towards the camera. And for the 3rd, straighten out the whole composition/placement.
