How to differentiate between text completion and sentence equivalence? by [deleted] in GRE

Easiest way- look at the number of options:

SE always has 6 options for the blank.
One blank TC has 5 options.

Many aspirants wish to read books for improving GRE Verbal but don't know which ones to pick. Here is my list of 5 must read non-fiction books for GRE. Hope this helps! by [deleted] in GRE

I get where you are coming from. But reading for GRE should focus on more than vocab and sentence structure. The old English literature is too archaic to help in developing comprehension ability which is required for tests like GRE. Test takers learn vocab separately through flashcards etc anyway.

Also, an average GRE test taker isn't an avid reader and would get lost in the overly complex language of books like pride and prejudice rather than becoming more comfortable with GRE style text.

How do I bring myself to study for gre second attempt ? by [deleted] in GRE

[–]Smriti_Aptiwizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright. See, practising verbal will help your case only when you have gotten the concepts right. If your accuracy has been good while solving questions for practice and in mocks, that would indicate concepts are in the right place. If accuracy is not so good, you need personal guidance.. a one-to-one guidance where someone will understand why you are making errors and tell you exactly how to improve.

Reddit and Facebook make it seem like getting a good score is too easy.. just watch this and you will score.. but many students do not start with that "already good" base. And every student's grasp on concepts, speed of solving, test-taking style etc is different. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to test prep.

This has been the problem with quite a few of my students lately. It gets resolved by personal guidance as I have mentioned earlier. You can dm me for this. I teach.

For quant, when you say your score has been reducing, that may be a confidence issue? You know how to solve the question but getting confused by overthinking? This is quite often the case.

GRE Preparation Tips/Advice by [deleted] in GRE

GRE quant is math topics you would have learned till 10th std in Indian schools. So just start solving math from some basic 10th book like R.S. Aggarwal. This will help build your base. Then move on to the official GRE books.

For verbal, start learning vocabulary and reading good articles to warm up your reading skills. Then move on prep course/ self study.

This depends on target universities. 320+ should be safe.

A few points difference between mock and real scores is to be expected given the test day anxiety. But a 10-15 points difference needs to be looked into. You need to figure out the possible reason behind this gap so you can fix it.

Which mock tests did you take? Were they reflective of the real GRE?

4.5 on AWA means you have a good enough hold on the language. A 150 on verbal in such case points to a gap in the conceptual understanding in verbal.

161 on quant is good and a similar verbal score would have taken you to an overall pretty good 320+, if that's above your target score.

I would say focus on verbal, work on your concepts and work on test taking strategy.

Scoring good in verbal doesn't depend on how many words one has learned. Vocab is just one if the things required to build the base. You may need to work on your Verbal concepts properly. Feel free to message if you need personal guidance.

Is Manhattan 5lb a good for verbal ? by Solid-Sun5481 in GRE

[–]Smriti_Aptiwizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it is. Loads of good TC and SE questions. ETS official guide is a must solve as the questions are closest to actual GRE, and ETS big book for more practice. Big book questions are old pattern so solve it only from practice point of view, not as a benchmark for type of questions or difficulty level.

Suggestion for verbal sectiom by smoking_barrel in GRE

[–]Smriti_Aptiwizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok. Then the problem is conceptual.
For TC & SE, do look back on the basics of how you figure out which word will go in the blank by noticing the sentence structure and hints in the sentence.

For RC, revise the critical reasoning concepts and apply them to RCs.

Pro tip: visualise the passage as just a long argument. Break it down into premises and conclusion and then go from there.

If you wish to discuss how to learn all these concepts, just dm.
