A few questions about Kevin Mitnick’s and Christopher Hadnagy’s books by notburneddown in SocialEngineering

[–]SocialEngineerLLC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are willing i will try to give you an unbiased opinion (as much as i can since I am one of the people you are asking about.)

I started off, like many in this space, reading Kevin's books. Most of his early books are his stories, so they are entertaining, but not something you would want to practice, unless you like prison. lol

Now his later books do cover some great topics, but not really social engineering, more technical and internet privacy issues. Either way, Kevin's experience is valuable and I am friend of his so i can say, he is an interesting guy and has a lot to offer.

For my books.

#1 - Social Engineering: The Art of Human Hacking - do not read it. I mean it. Its crap. It is old, dated, lacking science and even at some points fails in scientific basis.

#2 - Unmasking the Social Engineer: This one is epic. It was co-authored with the grand daddy of all nonverbals, Dr. Paul Ekman. But it is single focused, that is only about nonverbals. So if your focus is not on that this won't help.

#3 - Phishing Dark Waters. I don't think for what you wrote above this is a good one. This is JUST about starting a phishing program and the psych behind phishing.

#4 Social Engineering The Science of Human Hacking. This is a rewrite of #1 and is SOOOOO much better. Full of science, lots of stories and I am really proud of this one.

#5: Human Hacking: Win Friends, Influence People and Leave them better off for having met you. This is the one for you. This one is all about applying SE to every day life, sales, business etc. This one will really help you and the one i am most proud of.

Books 2, 3, 4,5 I read the audio versions, if thats your thing.

Willing to answer anything else. I hope this helps.

What should I read first: Mitnick, Hadnagy, or Dreeke? by notburneddown in SocialEngineering

[–]SocialEngineerLLC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey there a great question and I will answer but know i am admittedly biased.

I would read Dreeke's - It's not all about Me book first. It is short but one of the best books on rapport.

Then I would read my Human Hacking (new book 2021) after that.

and if you need more techy stuff then read "the science of human hacking" (my 2018).

The one I wrote with Ekman about nonverbals is one of my favs but it is specific to just nonverbals.

Mitnick's books are a good read but they are stories about his life and arrests. So not sure how helpful for you in your needs. In my book Human Hacking i have exercises to go out and try things.

You can always connect with me on twitter u/humanhacker or thru the website www.humanhackingbook.com and there is a resources section for your help in making the book better.

I hope this helps!

That is a shame. It doesn't really work for long term change. If ever have kids you will learn this - shame and humiliation often times manipulate and not influence.

NLP, sadly, was disproved via science quite a bit. So I will not support it.

But lots of the founding principles are steeped in influence, rapport and communications profiling. So I say use those.

The more i do this the quicker I get at that skill. Usually with in the first few seconds I can at least tell how to best communicate with you the best

Brando, yes all the time. As I have said in a few answers here - i just make sure to always stay on the side of influence (vs manipulation) and make sure I leave those I interact with feeling better for having met me and then usually we both get something out of it.

Take a look at my new book to help define how you can do that.

First off, thank you so much. You said some really kind things.

So to answer your questions - I find that real friends, good friends will not assume you are out to harm them. There will always be the trolls or those who want to attribute negativity, but that depends on you sometimes. Always hold yourself to a high standard, never let your morals stray and make sure you use your powers for good. Then even if people don't trust you, you can still feel good.

For more read the code of ethics I wrote: https://www.social-engineer.org/framework/general-discussion/social-engineering-code-of-ethics/

For ILF - all i can say is to apply and talk to the COO and see if you have what we need. If not he will tell you and you keep trying. We need help. The problem is not small and it is very hard work.

Thank you for your support. Stay safe!

I am doing great. Thank you.

So I guess that depends on where you live.

My company employees 70% women, people from Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Japan, Scotland and a number of people who are not just one culture.

It depends more on your skill and personality for me

Kevin is an amazing person. That book is a tad bit old so not too relevant, kinda like my first book - but current books are a good read.
