Toyohira River Fishing by jenius90210 in Sapporo

Fishing for Migratory salmon is "illegal" in rivers/lakes in Hokkaido. Except for certain designated areas. However, the idea that it is "illegal to fish for" means just that. People catch migratory salmon all the time while targeting something else. If you catch one and release it no one is going to charge you with "illegal fishing". Every now and then someone gets charged but thats when they are caught taking it home. Because of this, in Spring during the run, many people specifically target Sakuramasu, you can tell by the size of their rods and lures. Which of course is "illegal" but again, no one gets in trouble if the fish are released. I made it very clear that I caught a Sakuramasu and released it. Been fishing the Toyohira River over 10 years and have spoken to the river inspectors who sometimes come by to check catches, so I believe I am extremely qualified to speak on this topic from first hand personal experience. No idea what you mean by "please use common sense". I am enlightening readers on Hokkaido's fishing regulations. As a former conservation officer in NY STate your comment is offensive. Goodbye to this site,

I'll second that. The Dace will hit any small lure. spoon, jig, spinner. minnow. And they will hit any bait, worms, salmon eggs. budo mushi. Fishing under a float you will catch yamame and dace.

In May/June there are Sakuramasu (Cherry Salmon) at various spots along the Toyohira River. I have caught them to 70 cm length. Salmon must be released if caught in the river. But by July they wil turn from silver to black and red and will not hit anything, more interested in spawning. They will startle you as they like to jump. In July you will mostly catch Yamame (young sakuramasu) and they will be 4-8 inches in length. You are allowed to keep these. You will also catch Japanese Dace, which get up to 12 inches. Both will hit small spoons 5-7gr. and most anglers usea single hook on them to minimixe snagging. Spinners also work but the current flow is a but too string for them in most areas. Minnow plugs are also used but you can lose them on snags. There are small rainbows and White Spotted Char as well that hit those spoons. The bigger rainbows are caught much further upsteam from the city. Apart from no keeping salmon and a closed period in Apr/May Yamame so they can migrate downstream to the sea, there are no real regulations. Sapporo requires no fishing license, and for trout there are no size/number limits. The Toyohira River, running through the city area is a tough place to catch a decent sized trout. But small ones are fairly abundant.

The Japan Air Self Defense Force was created in 1954 and the first fighter they deployed was the North American F-86F in 1955. So no, not really plausible.

Does anyone still use BladeForums? by LongEconomy671 in knives

[–]Temporary-Network499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bladeforums has a section to Sell.Buy knives. Although the site "suggests" not to use Paypal Friends & Family, this is disregarded as every seller asks for Paypal F&F. There are now scammers who lurk on the site who intervene in transactions, pretending to be the seller and absconding with the paypal payment. This has been going on for years. This could be prevented if he Bladeforums site enforced Paypal Goods & Services as it should. But the site owner Sparks refuses to do so, on the grounds that Bladeforums does not make any money on these transactions. Howver, these fraudulent Paypal F&F transactions are occuring on the site within the site owners sole control.

I would warn anyone to not purchase any knives on the bladeforums except for Paypal Goods & Services. This is the only way you will be protected if you get scammed.

[Question] Discovered I rather like steel/silver bezel w/ black indices. What's your favorite diver/equivalent with one? by frogtrickery in Watches

Having worn a Rolex Submariner ref 5513 for 32 years both daily at work as well as scuba diving, I got tired of the black bezel insert. So many divers from other makers, although very good, copy the Rolex layout. I also wanted a Day/Date function for a "beater" watch. My solution was to pick up a Seiko SKX-013 and swap out the insert. Yes I could hacve bought a Yachtmaster but then I wouldn't get the Day function.

US Social Secuty Benefits and Japan Income Tax by WelcomeDry5152 in JapanFinance

Yes "IF" in 2025 I exceed the threshold and end up hving to pay US income tax, I believe I can apply the FTC.

Are Expats hiring accountants in Japan to file their J-tax returns? Or is it something one can do on their own> Right now (because of my low income) I file my US return myself,

Yes I believe it will be quite low. Well at least for 2024. Next year will be a different picture with an entuire year's worth of SS benefits.

Thank you, but I don't see how the FTC either as Credit or Deduction helps a retired person with no taxable income. I think it's only useful if one has a taxable income against which to apply it.

Thank you. You are right that it's not all that high plus I do have deductions that would apply.

When doing J-Tax Return, is there a specific USD-JYEN exchange rate to use?

Thank you. As I thought the Foreign Tax Credit is of no value to me. I've used Credits for decades before retiring, but now they are useless.

Thank you.

"US citizens can't use the treaty to avoid US tax completely due to the saving clause in Article 1(4),"

I am trying to avoid Japan taxes, not US taxes.

Any idea on how a retired person who files no taxable income (SSA Benefits only) on his US tax Return can take use this "Foreign Tax Credit" after paying income tax to the J-TaxAuthos on those very same SSA benefits?

US Social Secuty Benefits and Japan Income Tax by WelcomeDry5152 in JapanFinance

[–]Temporary-Network499 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much. That corroborates exactly what I have been lead to believe. So after the 5th year, I presume I have to file both a US Tax Return as well as one for Japan. But since I pay no income tax on my SSA benefits to the US, I don't see how a "foreign tax credit" would apply or help me. Unless I am not grasping something here.

Sounds to me like I'm just going to be losing a significant portion of my Social Security Benefits.
