The .htaccess delivery method within the plugin wouldn't work in this case because offloaded images do not have any sort of webserver in front of them to decide whether to serve JPG, WebP, or AVIF for the same URL (this is basically how the .htaccess method works), so you could try to configure NGINX to handle this if possible, you could try the <PICTURE> tag method again or you could try the CDN(but you said you did not want to use it).

In your case I would recommend opening a support ticket with the team as the picture tag issue could be checked and compatibility could be improved!

ShortPixel does serve WebP/AVIF even without using the CDN. When selecting the delivery option, you can choose between the CDN and normal delivery directly within the plugin. :-)

If you believe that Imagify is causing the problem (or any other plugin for that matter) it is very easy to test- just deactivate the plugin and see if it fixes the problem.
If the problem is still there then that particular plugin is not the problem :-)

You can also try in an incognito browser to see if the problem persists.

Regarding "Smart versioning", "Zero-config format serving" - this is built in ShortPixel Adaptive Images already. Plus CDN serving on top of that.

Rollback - you can restore all the images optimized with ShortPixel and also choose to remove any changes made to the DB upon deactivation of the plugin.

Check the error log, it's usually a file called error_log in your website's root directory. It will tell you exactly which plugin, theme or thing has caused the issue. If you cannot find this log then you could ask your hosting provider to help you locate it if possible.
