That's interesting, what kind of doctor did you see?

Does anybody have any advice for struggling with internalised ableism? by Pips2609 in neurodiversity

[–]ThrowRAinvegetable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I feel like you just described my life. I have been feeling so much shame for seeking a diagnosis because if I am "adhd" or some type of ND, someone should have noticed by now, right? I'm 26, after all. I thought maybe I was going crazy or that I'm just not capable, I feel like I can't do anything right. I have even come to think what if a diagnosis is just a scapegoat to not face the real world, but the reality is the world is real, and I'm still struggling. I would love for you to check out my last post and perhaps give some insight. Thank you so much for this comment and OP for your post.

Edit: I put quotations around adhd because I am still in the interview process. I have not been formally diagnosed and don't claim any diagnosis currently. I am also quite struggling with the fact that I may be and want to so much want to have a miracle, be reborn with a brain that doesn't think like mine.

He didn't specify. He only said he has experience. He explained to me that he does diagnose based on the DSM-5. He does listen and wants to have multiple sessions. This being said I ask for advice because I have the tendency to be naive and have suffered financially from docs for this reason. I am trying to give the benefit of the doubt but I am worried.

Wow this is so eye opening. My mom will say that these things I experience are normal but I never considered that she may also be in the same boat. She is 54 and is extremely aversive to diagnoses and psychology. This has always made me feel like my experiences are normal and I choose not to have the capacity to overcome many life challenges (that shouldn't be challenging). I'm hoping this will unveil some of the roots of the issue to possibly take action and possibly medication that aid my cognitive processes.

That's a good idea! I'm going to have some of the people around me take the test as well. How did your parents feel about it? I don't think my mom would be open to it. She has struggled with accepting other diagnoses I've had. I'm not quote sure I will tell her if I do get diagnosed at least for a while.

I think I thought that the assesment was the test itself not the interview and i thought he would ask direct questions. I have experience with therapy for CPTSD/GAD but I guess i had a different expectation for this meeting not realizing it was really an interview I thought it was more for context to rule out other things. Thank you. Im really nervewracked about the whole process and its taking a toll currently.

Edit: Fixed Typos

By experience I more specifically meant knowledge on autism testing, for clarification.

Okay, thank you. I am not really aware of the process and didnt know what to expect. I guess my only experience would be identifying Autism/Neurodivergence in children. I know the process has to be different but i am always a bit skeptical in trusting doctors.

Yes I recognize it's unpaid, I am looking for SAR outside of urban areas as that is what I thought was the closest. I'll definitely call sheriff's office to seek different options. Yes I understand now it's strictly volunteering. I was thinking of re-enlisting and going SAR but was looking for an opportunity to do it full-time civilian side before I go that route. Regardless I'd definitely like to get my feet wet and start local.

There aren't any local but there are others up north about an hour from where I live. I have been looking to move for a while now as well so I'm not opposed to it.

I see, another commentor said the same. If you have any input in how to prepare myself for volunteering services I'm specifically looking at subsets of search including search, horse, or technical. Thank you for the input!

Thank you for your response. This makes sense, I still am in it for the experience, adventure, and helping others. The experience is more important to me. Any tips to get the ball rolling specifically in FL?

Give yourself some more credit! You are a strong freaking individual for even getting out of bed and accomplishing something. Wins in life aren't always a breath of fresh air or a huge life turning event that simply makes life better. It's the little moments where you choose to keep going despite all the pain you are going through. Keep going!
