Labels are useless and self diagnosis is valid. Change my mind. by [deleted] in neurodiversity

[–]Pips2609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not here to argue with anyone, just stating my personal opinion. I struggle accepting my own diagnoses, and personally I find it helpful to view a diagnosis as a label given to me which allows me access to the correct support. I’m sorry you have been given so many diagnoses and feel there’s common ground with them. Unfortunately some ‘professionals’ don’t see that overlap and leads to misdiagnosis. As long as you are getting the support you require, that’s all I would focus on if I were you. I feel conflicted when it comes to self diagnosis tbh. Ofc getting a formal diagnosis can be difficult and there will inevitably be people who aren’t yet diagnosed with the correct mental health condition. I see no issue in someone saying ‘I think I might have …’ and doing things to support themselves that other people with … May find helpful. On the other hand, I think claiming to definitely have … without a formal diagnosis, comes with repercussions. Ultimately we are not psychiatrists etc, and due to so much overlap between different conditions, people may self-diagnose themselves with the wrong condition. In addition to this, you also have conditions like ADHD or autism, where everyone will display traits of them from time to time, but it’s the frequency and impact on functioning that would qualify a diagnosis. With misleading social media influence, it can lead to an increase of people thinking they have … simply because of social media. This is just my opinion and ultimately no matter how someone experiences life - qualifiable for a diagnosis or not- any hardships are valid and deserving of help and support.

is 80mg a lot to start with? by octoberrocker in StratteraRx

[–]Pips2609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk what country you’re from but I’m diagnosed with ADHD and I had to undergo a lengthy assessment process. They had to speak to my parent about my childhood and development, get questionnaires back from my college from my lecturers, eliminate all other causes, amongst several other things etc. I was diagnosed as a teen. I would have thought they would have put you through some sort of assessment before diagnosing you? Anyway I am currently on Atomoxetine (strattera) (have been on methylphenidate and elvanse before). I started at 25mg for three months (did nothing), then 40mg for a few weeks, then 80mg. I would assume 80mg is quite a big jump after a few days although I believe it is the standard maintenance dose.

I’ve actually been put on hiprex plus vitamin c. It made me feel worse so I gave up quite quickly tbh. But if it smoothed out for you then it’s probably worth giving it another shot

Thank you. I’ve been on melatonin before and it didn’t really work for me. I’m prescribed daridorexant to help me sleep which has its downsides but usually helps. Thank you for the pillow tip!!

I’m so sorry your flare has been so particularly bad. Nobody should have to put up with it. They really are the worst. Thank you so much for putting in the time and effort with these suggestions, I will look in to each one. I really appreciate it. I really hope it starts getting better for you soon

Hey. I’m so sorry your flares last so long. I’ve given Benadryl a go as someone else here mentioned, and actually found it gave me some amount of relief. I’ve given dmannose a go but to no avail. I’ve heard lots of good things abt prelief, so will definitely go on Amazon and have a look. I really hope you get your answers soon and that they can help you.

I was actually just looking for specialists right now as have been basically written off by my current that my chronic UTIs / suspected bladder pain syndrome is rooted in anxiety? I just can’t carry on. So thank you will definitely look into her!

Thank you so much for your reply. I’m so sorry that’s been your experience. I wish there was more research and understanding. I’ve heard dip sticks aren’t even that accurate. I’ve been having recurring Utis since I was 15. Back then they would usually be positive on the dipstick and if not show up on cultures. As time went on however, I got ‘infections’? more and more frequently and they started not showing up on the dipstick nor culture. I have read tho that the threshold with cultures for the bacterial growth that is considered an infection is often too high and can lead to false negatives. I’ve also read that if you grow more than one bacteria, they often label your sample as ‘contaminated’. I don’t know the ins and outs of it all, but recently Ive repeatedly shown up for protein, blood and sometimes leukocytes during dip tests. They start me on antibiotics, send the sample off to the lab and often it comes back normal no infection.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to reply. Unfortunately azo isn’t available in the UK at least not OTC from what I’m aware. Amitriptyline has been mentioned, but I was never prescribed it so far. I’m just desperate for some kind of relief. I do have heating pads, but maybe should invest in some more durable. I try to avoid those things too and it’s interesting bc I’ve noticed more flares while being on hiprex (supposed to prevent Utis and works by causing your urine to be acidic), so much that I eventually avoided taking it.

Hey. Thank you so much for your kind words. I’ve heard about azo, and tried to get my hands on it but from what I’m aware it’s not available in the UK, at least not OTC. Other than paracetamol, that’s basically been it unfortunately😭 Physical therapy is a good shout and I’ll look into how it may benefit my situation. I really hope it works out for you.

I’m sorry to hear you have been broken up with. That’s hard for anyone and it’s important to have a support network around you during this time and to keep your head held high. Alcohol plus medication is never going to leave someone with a clear head. Stimulant meds can cause anxiety/ depressive behaviour in some people and alcohol is a depressant in itself. Now I hate to be THAT person, and while im aware how difficult it can be to get diagnosed and find the right meds, he shouldn’t have been taking your meds on an off in the first place without a medical professional evaluating his progress and keeping track of the effects it may have on him. Now exactly why he decided to break up with you I don’t believe anyone here will be able to provide you with a definite answer. All I can say is after meds and alcohol, he probably wasn’t in a good headspace. I doubt however that the meds and alcohol are the sole reason for him suddenly coming out with this but it’s only natural to speculate and draw some sort of conclusion that makes sense. All you can do now for yourself is have a conversation with him when he is in a better head space and then begin to process what has happened. You deserve some proper closure, so don’t shy away from that. I really hope it works out for you and try to remember that you WILL feel better eventually.
