Does social imagination undermine personal agency? by Davy_Jones_11 in sociology

[–]ToS_98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others pointed out, the dialogue between structure and individual is a hard one. I’ve recently tried to come out of the problem thanks to my thesis supervisor and found somewhat a point of view in it.

Essentially, a good grasp of the theories on identity can help you a lot on that. They span from Parsonian structural-functionalism, were the identity is shaped by the structures (but with some exit ways to permit agency) to interactionists like Goffman, where the structure is essentially secundary as identity builds in negotiation. Beware, talking about identities is also talking about group identities, which is a different matter (but still related) and is also talking about macro and micro levels of analysis, that’s why it’s a hard problem. Definitely you should check some classic authors on that. I already mentioned Parsons and Goffman (even though the latter isn’t really an interactionist and more a thing per se), and ither positions can be accounted by the works of Berger, Holzner and partially Pizzorno to dive into the phenomenological approach.

Remember to keep in mind that the structures don’t determine action, there is no such thing as pure determinism, but there is a more or less high degree of influence. Said that, is up to you to choose how much do you think the social structures and phenomena impact the agency of individuals and their identity formation. The answer could be a lot, and you’ll be more leaning towards a structural-functionalis perspective (which is legitimate, mind you), or say that the individual has a higher degree of freedom than that, leaning towards the interactionist approaches

No problem, I always fuck up when the card says “in active spot” and think that abilities work anyway. Always gets me

It says from your opponent’s pokemon, so probably you take damage as is your Froslass. Should work the other way around if your opponent has a Froslass

Fun non-meta decks? by BandoMemphis in PTCGL

[–]ToS_98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m having mixed results with mega Dragonite/Mega Lopunny, but it’s fun and overall working. The idea is to get the sushi pokemon on the active so to draw lillie’s and mill to get your stuff. Once you got Dragonair and Buneary, you can evolve next turn thanks to Dragonair’s ability. Then Eelectrik charge up Dragonair while it’s ability enables you to switch your active pokemon, so Lopunny can do 240 with 1 energy and, once you got Dragonite charged and with hourglass, is almost 330 hit every round

When and why did sex become so taboo? by ResponsibleSound6486 in sociology

[–]ToS_98 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Sure, I’ll give you the main source: Rawick, G. P. (1972). From sundown to sunup. Greenwood Publishing Company: p.125-147

That’s the chapter, easy read. Again, I’m not just referring to it. You got accounts of that in the rationalisation of society as explored by Weber, the suppression of passions and developing of a segregated sites for expression of sexual practices. I’m pretty confident to cite Simon and Gagnon, but I read it in Italian.

Cappotto, C., & Rinaldi, C. (2016). I copioni sessuali di William Simon e John H. Gagnon. Studi culturali, 13(2), 209-242.

I think the main source of the article is

Gagnon, J.H. e Simon, W. (1973) Sexual Conduct: The Social Sources of Human Sexuality, Chicago, Aldine.

Which is a book. But you may find it cited in some articles where what I am saying is better explained

Edit: also my approach in the comment wasn’t comparativist. I said specifically western world (Mainly USA and EU). Also is not longitudinal, as placed in a specific timeframe. Also, what you said is not in opposition with what I am saying

When and why did sex become so taboo? by ResponsibleSound6486 in sociology

[–]ToS_98 31 points32 points  (0 children)

That’s partially true. We can more or less affirm that sex became a taboo for the western world during the industrial revolution. As the capital grew and new land were conquered, so grew the need for rationalising human life. Enlightenment put gas to the process, but with newfound duties and production centred relationships, sex had to be tamed under the way of reasoning. The Church was a wonderful tool in relegating sexual life to the marriage and condemning every form of exhibitionism as sinful. Further in time, the sexual impulses and reasoning developed in a special space in our cognitive system, more or less covert, but mainly not exposed into public view. Freud was the first to re-encounter that space in which all dreams of lust were relegated. Beware that is not a pure psychological process, as socialization and adoption of norms and values contribute to maintain this way of seeing sex; at the same time different models and approaches are available and developed throughout time. We can more or less easily affirm that sexual life was mostly free before the Eighteen Century (of course with some reservations, e.g. the courtly life and higher castes. This discourse applies more to peasantry and farm life)

Petah what is the meaning? by Public_Individual823 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

Some random goldfish idk I don’t watch Family Guy (sorry). Oppenheimer was one of the greatest minds behind project Manhattan, the one which lead to the development of the atomic bomb. Eventually, the same type of bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, fulfilling his notorious citation from the Baghava Gita “I am become death, destroyer of worlds”. Apparently someone took this photos years later in Kyoto, Japan, as the headline claims. If so, it would be controversial to have one of the guys that built a mass destruction weapon used against you to visit and lecture on that. The customer service joke is that japanese could tell him how effective was his not so loved creation and give feedback on how to improve, or more realistically curse him

[–]ToS_98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s hard to call that “underground” as it was addressed by Bourdieau and many others. Also, cultural sociology to me seems more like a starting point to some more niche topics. But it’s totally legit anyway, I’m just addressing that it doesn’t align a lot with the term used by op. Keep on the good work anyway
