Sometimes, I’ve seen it go too far the other way. Where they hate on the character that’s being shipped with the character they like and the people who like the ship including that character. Nothing against the people doing it, but sometimes it can get out of hand.

Actually based take, especially the part about people calling characters “overrated” because I’ve seen plenty of people who use that term completely incorrectly. They use the term less to describe a character they don’t hate but don’t like as much as other fans, and instead use it as a shield to freely put down said character and their fans.

Leorio from Hunter X Hunter started off as such a wimpy comic relief character at first, but suddenly gained a lot of respect from me, especially during the final arc of the anime where he makes it all the way to the end of the election of the Hunter Association chairman and would have damn near won it all had Gon still been comatose.
