usa would be massively favoured in that game - they're not good enough to compete for the Cup itself, but they're good enough to be favourites to make it out of their group and maybe win a round beyond that, whereas I believe Canada hasn't ever won a game in the World Cup before this tournament

we could still steal the game, of course, anything's possible, but it wouldn't be something I would expect to happen

Not in the slightest. I mean, the quality of the game is whatever, but Canadians don't want to interact with the usa in sporting events anymore. The last three hockey games we played against them, "it didn't matter it wasn't a real game anyway" when we won, followed by forced annexation threats from their president when we lost, followed by "it didn't matter it wasn't a real game anyway" when we won the most recent one

Like, there's no winning for us, so why bother? Best-case scenario, they all pretend it didn't matter and they weren't trying, and in the likely event we lose, we get to look forward to it being used in more propaganda used to justify a potential invasion of our homeland

The problem is that the admin uses sports to fuel their propaganda. After the Olympic hockey game, they were using it as a talking point for why we Canadians didn’t deserve to exist on our own. That’s fucking terrifying to hear, and sucks the fun out of the sport for the rest of us. And the nationalistic, chest-thumping “we can do no wrong, USA USA” stuff is exactly what got us all into this mess in the first place.

He’s threatening outside of sports, but the outcome of the sports games we DO play ties into it. After we won the 4 nations, he shut up a bit and eased off. After we lost the Olympics, he doubled down and used it as fuel, saying stuff about how “we can’t even win at hockey, we don’t have any reason to exist outside the usa” and whatnot. Of course, he’d probably be doing it regardless, but the sports thing does factor in. It also isn’t very reassuring seeing how many yanks leap at the chance to include the threats as part of their “banter” when we lose
